Roland GR20 Guitar Synthesizer
The Roland GR-20 S offers a new digital pitch detection technology - and a whole new low price! You select sounds by category (Strings, Organ, Synth, etc.) and then select your favorite variation. The GR20 sounds great and tracks faster and more accurately than any of its predecessors. Editing is not as deep as the GR33 (which offers more individualized control over each string) but you do get some easy to use parameters with Attack, Release, Chorus, and Delay/Reverb knobs. A new streamlined profile invites you to place the GR20 next to your GT6 and use Patch Link to line up your sounds. With the GR20, it’s easy to tap into the power of guitar synthesis. The GRT20 is compatible with all GK-series Divided Pickups, including the fantastic new GK3 (not included).
Ever wanted to thicken up your guitar sound with a warm synth pad? Or how about a screaming lead sound that puts you in front? The GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer makes playing high-quality synthesizer and instrument sounds from your guitar as simple as 1-2-3. First, attach the GK-3 Divided Pickup (not included) to your steel-stringed electric (no drilling necessary). Second, select the type of sound you want using the Bank knob. Third, choose a sound variation using the Number/Value dial and start playing.

Guitar Synth, or Compact Pedal?
With the GR-20 it feels like both.
Roland’s Finest Sounds with Exceptional Tracking
At the heart of the GR-20 is an advanced sound engine based on Roland’s professional synthesizers. Sounds can be played with up to 48-voice polyphony for full, rich-sounding Patches. And the sounds are equally impressive. From expressive string ensembles to spiritual tabla loops coupled with sitar—all with adjustable attack and release—there’s no limit to what you can do. Sophisticated DSP makes the GR-20’s pitch detection ultra-reliable, so you can strum with confidence.
Take Your Guitar Playing Further
Want to create a sound that’s all your own? Try blending the natural sound of your guitar pickups with the GR-20. Thankfully, the GK-3 Divided Pickup makes this easy via a larger and smoother GK knob. Imagine playing chords and then slowly fading in a swirling, breathy pad to create intensity. Or how about playing a distorted lead on your guitar with a thick synth lead sound? Now take this a step further with the GR-20’s Patch Link function. This allows you to easily assign GR-20 Patches to match effect Patches in MIDI-capable processors like the BOSS GT-6. It’s the ultimate system for serious guitarists.
About the New GK-3 Divided Pickup (not included)
The GK-3 is 30 percent thinner than its predecessor, and it now uses a 1/4-inch jack for normal guitar input. The pickup includes an adjustable curve design to keep an even distance between the strings for better response (the pickup cable length is also adjustable). Owners of Les Paul-type guitars can install the GK-3 safely without drilling using a special attachment plate included in the box.

| Only having had this now for a few days, I can tell that the construction of this unit is well built, and rugid enough to handle performance after performance. | | Reliability:
| Once again, since I've only had this unit for a few days now, I cannot say how reliable it is personally... but I do know that the guitarist I play with has had one for sometime now, and he's never seemed to have any problems with it. | | Overall:
| This has to got to be one of the best purchases I've made in a long time... I'm currently using this with a nylon string flamenco acoustic guitar custom fitted with RMC pickups & preamp (Instead of the GK3). This is definitely going to be a great asset to my current setup... and I'm really looking forward to putting this little beast to the test. | | Playability and Feel:
| Everything on this unit seems to be user friendly... after skimming through the owner's manual... I was able to play around with this unit and not feel so intimidated. As I mentioned before, this unit seems to be well built and the ease of use with all the controls makes this guitar synth a must have for any guitarist looking to venture beyond the sound of the 6 string. | | Tone:
| With the exception of a few bright sounding ethnic and percussive (orchestral) patches... The sound quality of the patches seem to be very warm and deep. The response time is amazing as well as the tracking... I was able to play quick lead lines, and this thing kept up with almost NO noticeable latency. | | Finish:
| This is definitely a very nice looking piece of gear. | | Action:

| I haven't had the GR-20 long enough to evaluate its quality and dependability. The GR-20 appears to be made well; however, it is mostly plastic; what isn't these days? Time will tell! | | Reliability:
| Like quality and dependability, it is difficult to determine how the GR-20 will stand up over time. I have other Roland/Boss products that have lasted decades, so I would expect the same from the GR-20. | | Overall:
| As the title states: Awesome device... A "MUST HAVE" for any versatile guitarist. The GR-20 takes the guitar, and the guitarist, to another dimension. This is not a replacement for a keyboard or keyboardist, just like a keyboard synth cannot replace a guitar/guitarist; however, it can significantly add to any style of playing. Just awesome!!! I highly recommend the GR-20. | | Playability and Feel:
| I am using a GK-3 pickup on a '85 Strat with the GR-20. The GR-20 reacts instantaneously to each note. The pickup, however, must be perfectly setup or there will be tonal/volume differences between the different strings. Also, you have to play the GR-20 as if you were actually playing the synth sound (i.e., strings, keyboards, horns, etc.) to get the best responses. Mixing the GR-20 and regular guitar sounds (with effects) is easy and fun to use. | | Tone:
| The tones (patches) are fantastic; however, do not expect to get the perfect sound of each emulated instrument, especially through a live PA set up. While the pianos sound great through headphones, the tonal quality can be distorted somewhat, depending on the amp or PA you are using. The GR-20's strings, synth sounds, and sound effects are great. It is a good substitute for a bass as well. I do not see much use for the "guitar" sounds and get better acoustic sounds from my Line6 amp and my VG Strat without the GR-20. I may pick up a Roland-Ready Strat just for the GR-20. | | Finish:
| Not really applicable, but the GR-20 looks great. | | Action:
