Roland MC 808 Sampling Groovebox

The Roland MC-808 Groovebox and Sampler is a New-Generation Groovebox with Motorized Faders
From the company that made groovebox a household name comes a remarkable addition to the famous Roland MC family: the MC-808. The sleek, silver powerstation features eight motorized faders on its surface - a groovebox first! With Roland’s most sophisticated processor at its core, the MC-808 shares the same top-of-the-line sampling and sequencing features as its elder sibling, the MC-909, yet it comes in at a new, low price!

The MC-808 shares two key attributes with the flagship MC-909: The same top-of-the-line sampling and sequencing features that made the MC-909 so famous are built into the MC-808, making it a serious tool for sampling, editing, track building, and mixing. Performers are in for an extra treat with the MC-808, however, as is the world’s first groovebox with motorized faders. No matter what pattern is called up, the faders will snap to the proper position. As a result, the parameter values and position of the faders always correspond, allowing the performer to see the values instantly and make changes directly. No more unexpected jumps in values when a fader is grabbed in mid-performance. It’s always in the right position.

With the exception of a few must have favorites from the MC-909, all of the MC-808’s internal sounds and patterns have been created fresh. These slammin’ new dance and hip-hop grooves are instantly ready for primetime, but playing and manipulating the internal patterns is only half the fun. The MC-808 allows any sounds to be sampled, edited, and added to the song WAV and AIF files can also be imported from computer via USB.

The MC-808 ships with a free Mac/PC editor for serious sample editing tasks on the luxury of a large computer monitor, and for shuttling the files effortlessly back and forth via USB.

For beat-makers, producers, remixers, live performers, and DJs, no sampling groovebox offers more bang for the buck than the MC-808.

QUALITY:
Built pretty solid although it is very light compared to the MPC1k. I would hate to see what would happen if I ever dropped it. That wouldn't happen though.

FEATURES:
This box is full of features. Love the face that I can also use it as a midi controller using the moto faders to my advantage while playing with Ableton. Sampling is a bit of a chore, but nothing to shout about.

EASE OF USE:
Very easy to use if you have experience with other roland products. The manual is pretty vague though so you really just have to keep working with it to get more and more familiar.

VALUE:
I got a steal at GC ($600 brand new). The price they had listed was $1100 but I had seen it at other places for $800. If I lost it, I would definitely buy it again. Nice break away from software and really lets your creative juices flow with the hands on approach.

SOUND:
Sounds are alot better than the MC909. All a

Subject:MC808 Redefines
Overall:

QUALITY:
Only concern I have is that the unit I received, once turned on, has a segment that won't illuminate, in the large right-most 3-digit LED -- until the unit has been "on" for a good 15 minutes or so. One other thing: the LCD back-light display adjustment is woefully inadequate for viewing from the front while sitting at a relatively low angle, in front of the unit! There needs to be greater latitude in contrast control for that LCD screen. That's probably the worse quality feature next to the exceptionally poor judgment in the extensive use of a rather cheezy-feeling plastic case for the sides, and under-belly.

FEATURES:
Next to the fantastic sounds and ease-of-use, the motorized faders are absolutely the winner here. Moreover, the methodology employed for real-time audio editing is ingenious. Least impressive is the low mass of the product: it *looks* heavy to the uninitiated, but it's quite a surprise to pick it up in your hand, only to dis

Everything holds together compared to other instruments i have owned. I just wouldn't drop it.

FEATURES:
The best feature would have to be the motorized faders those help alot. Another feature would have to be the sampler, but you would have to expand the memory to be able to get alot.

EASE OF USE:
It takes a little while to figure out what your doing but once you got that your on you way.

VALUE:
A friend of mine has the MC909 which is pretty awesome, but they almost compare in my opinion.

SOUND:
It sounds great.

Subject:Useless Without a PC

FEATURES:
Onboard sample editing is extremely limited. Without a connected computer, this thing is basically useless. Roland missed the point of a "groovebox" with this one.
