Sony PCMD1 Portable Digital Recorder

The Sony PCM-D1 has a level of quality that's matched only by its extraordinary cool factor.

The Sony PCM-D1 portable recorder represents a significant advance in high-quality mobile recording. Designed to produce digital stereo recordings that are completely faithful to the original master, the PCM-D1 is capable of re-creating even the most subtle performance nuances.

The PCM-D1 can be used for high-quality recording in an array of applications including live sound, house of worship and theatrical performance, as well as by journalists in the field.

The body of this portable recorder is fashioned from pure 1mm thick pressed titanium that’s several times harder than alumite-treated aluminum. Sound engineers will simply not want to put this unit down.

The PCM-D1 recorder is lightweight, free of all drive mechanisms, equipped with extraordinarily sensitive, built-in condenser microphones, and designed with circuits that process stereo sound with virtually no extraneous noise. The PCM-D1 features 96K-24 bit recording capability, 4GB internal flash memory, removable Memory Stick Pro™ high-speed storage and a built-in USB 2.0 port for Macintosh® and Windows®/PC operating systems.

Subject:Excellent product but expensive.
Overall:

QUALITY:
Excellent. What you would expect from a unit costing street $1500.

FEATURES:
Very good. Faster firewire could be useful. Have not used any accessories yet. You can consider also Sony's D50 which is clearly inspired by the D1 design.

EASE OF USE:
very good - excellent. I rate it a 5.

VALUE:
If you have the money, it's worth it. But the d50 is close and costs much less. We tested both at Blink Music, Cambridge, for snapshots of arrangements or piano takes. Both are excellent products and I recommend both for onlocation, broadcast, interview and on location. Consider Sony's breakout box for external mics for onlocation, the XLR-1, cost about $490 street at the time of this review.

SOUND:
Not disappointing like some of the others. Significantly better than edirol R09, zoom has according to a collegue hiss problems. I would not rate it as significantly better than the d50. D50 offers wide ster

Subject:as much as a Mac? Slap!
Overall:

QUALITY:
well made. definitely not for the price though. dont know if it will withhold a spill on the floor and i wouldnt chance it as the parts seem delicate

FEATURES:
No outstanding features that arent on your run of the mill portable digital recorders though the retro meters are attractive and informative. The ZOOM handheld is much more cost effective and while it doesnt look as savvy, it performs as well as the pcmd1 once you get beneath the surface.

EASE OF USE:
Average. Will need the book for special tasks but other than that it is easy to navigate.

VALUE:
0. Nearly $2,000 for a handheld recorder? Ridiculous. You can purchase an entire studio for this price and with prices on memory are dropping quicker than ever, there is no reason for this product to be such out of whack with todays prices. This costs as much as a mac!!! Nobody is going to track there album on this. This is a scetchpad or message taker.
