Product Description

The TASCAM DM4800 is the ultimate digital console for professional users who demand a flexible, 64-channel mix platform that configures to fit their needs.
A fat channel strip in the center of the board provides instant access to 4-band parametric EQ, dynamics and aux controls available for the first 48 channels. Twenty-four studio-grade mic preamps provide enough inputs for a live event, and more can be added using expansion cards with external preamps. The standard compliment of analog and digital I/O is more than you'll find on consoles costing three times as much, and a completely configurable 24-buss routing system allows you to re-patch the board at the flick of a switch. Shown above with optional MU-1000 meter bridge .

TASCAM's DM-4800 fits seamlessly into the modern recording environment based around a computer DAW. With a single button press, the Remote layer provides a 24-fader control surface for control of premiere workstations such as Pro Tools, Logic, SONAR, DP, Cubase and Nuendo. The optional IF-FW/DM mkII interface card provides 32 channels to and from a computer at up to 96kHz over a single FireWire cable. And the optional surround monitoring card provides downmixing, bass management and level control for mixing in up to 6.1 surround. No matter what your application, the TASCAM DM-4800 adapts to the needs of any professional audio installation.

Overall Rating
Ease of Use
Tascam DM4800 Is A Multi-Purpose High Quality Digital Mixer! Learning Curve Required!
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
This particular unit exhibits good quality in the Tascam tradition of their "high end" products. The construction is well built and the unit is solid. In fact, this unit had to be shipped via freight service, as the total delivered weight is over 100lbs.
What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could?
Because I previously owned an FW-1884/FE-8 system, I migrated into the DM-4800 nicely, but it has much more features. The motorized faders are great and the layering and routing is awesome for controlling mic/line connection and digital firewire connections for MIDI/Audio tracks into your DAW. I also like the fact you can have two sets of monitors connected and switch between the two with the touch of a button for mix comparisons.
Ease of Use
How easy is this product to use? How easy is the product to use with other products? Did it take long for you to learn to use this product? Was the manual helpful? How playable do you consider this product to be?
This is the section where I should comment about my "Learning Curve Required!" comment in the title of this review. It is important to read as much of the manual as possible, as the routing system can become complex if you are using the IF/FW-MKII firewire care like I am. You will want to understand how the mixer uses USB for virtual MIDI ports to the computer along with using the firewire card for recording digital audio and using it's MIDI port as well. Things can get complicated here, but most of what you will need is in the manual. However, it's a thick manual so you will want to take some time and read it over a few weeks and then, focusing on sections at a time.
How is the tone?
The sound of this mixing desk is awesome! Nice, clean, crisp sound from great pre-amps! I recently purchased a pair of Event Opals and the sounds coming through the board and out these monitors is simply wonderful! The mixer compliments the monitors quite well.
How has it stood up over time?
I've only had it for just about a month, but I have no doubt it will last for some time given it's construction and the Tascam reputation for quality. I'm happy I finally decided to trade up from my FW-1884 system. I originally tried the Allen & Heath ZED R16, but returned it in favor of the DM-4800. The ZED R16 is not match to the DM-4800.
Your general opinion of this product.
Great product from Tascam! I'm very satisfied with this unit and have purchased the MU1000 Meter Bridge (along with the IF/FW MKII firewire card). While my productions took a break while I learned enough of how to use the board and integrate it into my DAW, I'm now back to work producing music and it never sounded better! The Tascam DM-4800 has been a wonderful addition to the arsenal. However, it is not a board for the meek! ;-) If you want a top of the line mixing desk, the DM-4800 is the board for you, but plan on investing both the funds to purchase and the time to learn how to use it. In both cases, you won't be disappointed.
