General
Your general opinion of this product.
I played a 656ce at a local guitar store and was absolutely amazed. I must've demoed it for about 15-20 minutes and was immediately sold. Thankfully I was able to take advantage of AMS's 12 month financing deal to make owning one a reality! I received my 656ce a few days ago and am pleased as punch!
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
This was my first purchase from AMS and I was worried. Since I hadn't really seen or played the guitar, my thoughts were, "What if I get a dead one?" My fears were relieved as the quality of this guitar is typical Taylor: Top notch. From the neck, to the body binding, the fingerboard and soundboard, the back, sides, headstock, etc. Taylor does quality work.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Since I demoed this guitar at a local store, I knew about its playability and feel. Strumming, picking and playing arpeggios weren't an issue. Not owning a 12 string for several years, it's going to take time to develop muscle memory. However the playability and feel of this 656Ce is ergonomically sound.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Compared to the 656ce I demoed, this one sounds a little on the bright side. I know the maple back, sides and ebony fingerboard factor into that equation. However I also know the one I demoed is a 2012 model so its wood has had time to "develop". To get an idea of its tone, I strummed above and behind the soundhole. I heard sweet warm, round tones when strumming at the neck and 2-4 inches above the soundhole. So I know when this guitar settles down, it'll be sweet as my 616ce did the same thing.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
Perfect. The guitar was shipped detuned and I was concerned it may need a set-up after tuning it. By the way, I let the guitar sit in the house for 5.5 hours before I opened the box and removed it from its case. After tuning it to pitch, I let the guitar set in for 20 minutes. Some fine re-tuning was required and the 656ce took it in stride. At concert pitch the action remained low and the neck didn't require an adjustment. NOTE: Taylor no longer supplies a truss rod wrench with their guitars. Thankfully I kept one from a 310ce I purchased in 2000.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
The finish was superb. No uneven areas or gaps. Excellent job Taylor!
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
I can't comment on this as I just received it a few days ago. However I'm also the proud owner of a 616ce. Knowing Taylor quality, I'm certain the 656ce will be just as reliable.
