Tech 21 SansAmp RBI Bass DI Preamp

The Tech 21 SansAmp RBI delivers the incredible tone and versatility of the SansAmp Bass Driver DI in a convenient 1-space rackmount package, with even more features!
Designed specifically to create the absolute best bass tones, its Presence, Drive and Blend knobs let you control exactly how down & dirty or piano-string clean you want to be. The RBI provides 3-band EQ (including a dedicated Mid control!), a series/parallel switchable effects loop, and an individual XLR output level control. Its flexible I/O section includes affected and unaffected XLR and quarter-inch outputs, as well as front and rear panel inputs.

EXCEPTIONAL FLEXIBILITY
Armed with a truckload of bass amp rigs in a single rackspace, you can travel as heavy or light as you like:

  • Show up at any studio with just a SansAmp RBI and plug directly into the board for premium tones without miking.
  • Gig with the SansAmp RBI directly through the house PA without using a separate amp.
  • Go to a gig with a SansAmp RBI, a Bass Power Engine 60 and run directly through the house P.A. system.
  • Take a more traditional set-up to a gig with a SansAmp RBI, power amp and speaker cabinet, and run directly through the house P.A. system.
Tech 21 SansAmp RBI Additional Features
  • Drive adjusts the overall amount of gain and overdrive.
  • Presence brings out the upper harmonic content and attack.
  • Blend allows you to mix the direct instrument signal with SansAmp Tube Amplifier Emulation circuitry.
  • Active Bass and Treble controls cut or boost ±12dB.
  • Dedicated Mid control, cut or boost ±12dB.
  • Individual Level control for the XLR out to optimize your amp's output relative to the P.A. system.
  • Effects Loop.
  • Mix 50/50 switch to configure the Effects Loop in series or parallel.
  • Quarter-inch rear input and XLR output with selectable levels.
  • Buffered uneffected XLR output to run a dry signal to a separate channel.
  • Footswitch input to engage unit.
  • Footswitch output to chain and toggle between another SansAmp RBI.
A 1U rackmount version of SansAmp Bass Driver DI, and then some..

Just like its exceptionally popular pedal predecessor, SansAmp RBI offers you an entire sound spectrum of the most coveted traditional and modern bass amp systems --including mondo overdriven tones that typically require a complex mass of gizmos that weren't even designed for bass in the first place. Sample settings, such as SVT- style, Bassman-style, King's X-style, and Crimson-style (to name a few) are included in the owner's manual to get you started.

Most controls are the same as SansAmp Bass Driver DI:
Drive adjusts the overall amount of gain and overdrive; Presence brings out the upper harmonic content and attack; Blend allows you to mix the direct instrument signal with SansAmp Tube Amplifier Emulation circuitry; and active Bass and Treble controls cut or boost ±12dB.

TECH 21 - GREAT TONE. BUILT RIGHT.
In 1989, after ten years exhaustive research and development with world-class guitar amplifiers, a tired but victorious B. Andrew Barta launched his unique SansAmp. This revolutionary pedal-sized tube amplifier emulator enables musicians to dial in monster tones and patch them directly to a studio mixer or stage PA. Its discrete 100% analog circuitry uses a hyper-realistic tone structure that includes mic and speaker simulation with pre and power amp distortion characteristics. Finally, it was possible to get stunning, consistent tones without brutalizing amps, heaving speaker cabs or futzing with microphones to find that elusive ‘sweet spot.’ Instead, the SansAmp delivered all of its mammoth sounds from a pocket-sized pedal.

A decade and a half later, the SansAmp technology has developed into an impressive line of products to cover every application. Each product is still hand-built in the USA using the best possible materials and exclusive components, such as our smooth custom actuators which are licensed to other major manufacturers. Tech 21’s range of products are developed with a critical ear for tonal perfection and an open ear to our customers’ needs.

The sample settings for SansAmp models and guitar and bass amplifiers include such classics as Marshall, Fender, Mesa/Boogie, SVT, and artists like Santana, Metallica, Van Halen and Hendrix. These settings are also a starting point for you to find your own individual tone and style using Tech 21's original products.

Welcome to the exceptional sound of Tech 21. Listen Up.

Overall: Plenty of high & low Z input/output jacks makes this unit very versatile. Haven't owned the unit very long to attest to long term reliability. Very loud and colorful with a simple Crown power amp/Fender Jazz bass.

It takes some time to get the sound you want. but once you do it rules the school, it will make your set up sound deeper and punchier and all around better. blows away the hartke 4000 i used to have. now i use this thru a qsc power amp it seems alot louder than when i had the hartke d.i. going to the power amp. the eg is at the right frequencey's even tho when i first pluged it into my combo amp the mid seemed like. it wasnt in the right place. but after i pluged it into my swr gothial III the thing ruled. its good. trust me it sounds good.

listen to my band called the physical challenge. at www.mp3.com/physicalchallenge i recorded with the hartke there. and i wish i had this then.

Overall: As soon as I plugged this in, I was blown away. You can easily find a sound to suit your needs. I set it at the "svt" setting, tweaked the treble and bass a bit and found perfection. Coupled with a Crown power amp, I built the perfect bass head almost identical (if not better, in my opinion) to the Ampeg svt4pro for under half the cost!

QUALITY:
A very nice, professional grade preamp. This thing is solidly built with quality components. I consider this the last bass rig refinement I'll ever need. Best feature is that you can plug it in, dial a few knobs, and get a killer tone. No fiddling with pages of digital numerical values - turn the knob, get the tone - boom. I've been playing bass for 30 years, and this is what I've been searching for for a LONG time. I've tried them all, but this is the goods right here. Do yourself a favor and sell all of that other gear, and getcha one of these.

FEATURES:
Best features are the amazing variety of tones available, and the simplicity of being able to dial it in quickly. High quality construction - built very solidly.

EASE OF USE:
Very easy to use. Even though it's not necessary, read the manual. There are a few good, important tidbits of knowledge you'll want to be able to interface with other gear at the proper gain.

Overall: OVERALL:
Overall I am very happy with my choice. It will suit my needs for a long while..I like the sounds I get, and the many ways you can get from point A to B. The only other preamp I would consider getting in the future would be an Avalon U5, but thats only if I started recording for real..and I would still use the RBI. It is stuck in my rack forever.

QUALITY:
Seems sturdy and well built, smooth pots, I don't expect any problems.

FEATURES:
Flexability oozes out of this unit, you can hook it up several different ways to suit almost any situation..I like it because I can just plug right into it and then straight to my mixer or DAW and have an awsome tone.

EASE OF USE:
Very easy to use..turn some knobs, pluck a string, want a different sound? turn some knobs again, pluck a string..

VALUE:
Reasonably priced for a decent preamp, I wish it was a little cheaper, but hey the other stuff I was looking at cost more
