Toontrack EZ Drummer Software

The Toontrack EZ Drummer is a multi-microphone drum sampler designed for musicians and producers in need of a compact, affordable, easy to handle plug-in without compromising sound quality or control.
The visualized drums in the interface combine auditioning of sounds and drumkit construction. The extensive drag and drop midi-library (featuring 8000+ midifiles) enables users to create a great drumtrack in just a few clicks. For more advanced handling, users can control microphone bleeding and levels between drums using the internal mixer.

EZ Drummer Features

  • 7000 sound files at 16-bit / 44.1kHz equivalent to 5Gb of uncompressed wav files.
  • Instant access to more than 8000 midi drum patterns with prelistening, quick browsing and drag’n’drop functionality.
  • Same extensive layer depth on all drums and cymbals as in EZ Drummers big brother - dfh SUPERIOR.
  • dfh EZD ranges from entry level usability to pro handling
  • Features multiple microphone control
  • TPC II reduces system requirements to a minimum
  • Operates in General MIDI
  • Internal mixer allows stereo and multitrack routing into the host through one single plug in
  • Preset mix modes for quick sound changes
  • Interface visualizes the drums loaded and combines auditioning and kit construction
  • Drums recorded at Avatar Studios, New York by worldclass drummers and producers
  • The humanizer function combines drum hit randomizing and non-cycling
  • Velocity sweep allows instant changes to Midi data, extending groove context relevance.
  • Possibilities for the user to add their own midi files to the library.

The mixer also allows stereo and multitrack routing into the host through one single plug-in, and thanks to the second generation Toontrack Percussive Compression (TPC), system requirements are kept to a minimum.

The drums for EZ Drummer were recorded, produced and played with the best in the business. From their pro SUPERIOR line Toontrack has adopted the humanizing features that are instrumental in making these drum samplers the pinnacle in digital drum production.

Recording Notes
In 2005 Toontrack Music was contacted by Pat Thrall with a request to record drums for the Superior Drummer software engine at the New York studio where Pat had his professional home at the time. We all knew Pats work (with Glenn Hughes, Black Crowes etc) and jumped at the opportunity to work with one of our heroes. Matters weren´t made worse by the fact that Pat introduced another long time hero of ours to add his talents, passion and experience to the recordings, Neil Dorfsman. Neil has been around since the 70s recording and producing artists like, Kiss (oh the stories…), Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, Sting etc. Enough said?

Pat also brought along renowned live and session drummer Nir Z whose credits include such diverse acts as Genesis and Joss Stone to play his GMS drums for the sessions.

The team was finalized with Mattias Eklund and Henrik Kjellberg from Toontrack Music and together they conducted a number of recordings during 2005. The sounds for EZ Drummer were recorded and produced at Avatar Studios New York (formerly known as Power Station) on the 1st of October 2005 by Pat Thrall, Neil Dorfsman and Nir Z. Needless to say the recordings ended up every bit as great (and better) as expected. The timeless quality of the sound, the consistency of the playing and recording and the legendary atmosphere from a studio that has seen many of the greats create their masterpieces within its walls all make for a worthy start of the next generation of Toontrack Acoustic Drumsamplers.

Subject:Lives up to it's name
Quality: Worked well with no glitches. The drum sounds are excellent. I've no complaints regarding the quality. Seems to do everthing it claims to in the description very well.
Features: Has all the features I need for great sounding drum tracks. Wasn't necessary for me to get superior drummer because I convert all the tracks to wav files anyhow and can do any additonal eq-ing or processing like that. My ONLY disappointment with the program was that I was expecting a lot more in terms of beats and fills. It has the 7-8000 that it claims (I think), but most of those beats are variations in cymbals and hig-hats. In actuality there aren't all that many different rhythms. I have much more of a selection in the 400 patterns of my Boss DR 880 Dr. Rhythm. I could always run them through EZ drummer though, so it's not a huge deal.
Ease of Use: I bought it for ease of use, and as my title states - it lives up to it's name. Was creating tracks instantly. By far the easiest drum track creating tool I ever used.
Value: I'm happy with the price.
Appearance: What you see in the description is exactly what you get.

Subject:EZdrummer rules. Seriously.
Quality: It's rock solid stable. I rarely have gotten any crashes or hiccups with this software, and anything I've experience, Toontrack fixed with an update in a timely fashion.
Features: It's perfect. It's easy and it sounds good. If you're a songwriter that doesn't like getting bogged down in drum programming, but still want drums that sound very good, you need this.
Ease of Use: Seriously, you don't need to touch the manual, it's that easy. Just poke around between the main window, Mixer, and Grooves page and you'll be all set.
Value: For the price, this is a no-brainer plugin for anyone who records on the computer to have. Even if you have a more in depth drum program like Superior 2.0, BFD, etc, you can still benefit by having EZD in your arsenal. I also use Superior 2.0, and I often start my project by loading EZdrummer, program my drums, then work on the rest of the instruments. If I feel I need a little more control over my drum mix, I'll just swap out the EZD plugin and drop in Superior 2.0, and BAM, I'm working on the same drum track, but now with ultimate control and power. But honestly, I often just leave EZD there because it really does sound very good.
Appearance: The graphics on EZdrummer and all the EZX's are beautiful, and I'd even say inspiring. They really did a great job in this area. And it makes it even more of a pleasure to use. Kind of makes you feel like you have your own little drumset there, and you can watch it "play" while it's going with the visual hits that occur.

Subject:The best features are it's achilles heel...
Quality: very kool product, thoughtfully made with the best intentions... It depends entirely on your other hardware and software configuations. Outside the sequencer of choice the product delivers as promised with great sounds and grooves.
Features: It's ability to drag+drop the grooves... I would strive to make it work with ALOT more music creation tools.
Ease of Use: very easy... hopefully once the grooves are copied to a track they can be tweeked, I didn't get that far because it doesn't support cubase LE. At least I couldn't get it to work, also on toontrack forum page LE is not listed as a "tested" program. The manual was not helpful in problem solving. I still think it's a great pruduct. I think I can create audio slices with it to make it work.
Value: Great value! Only, buyers beware... Go to the toontrack web site to find out if it works with your configuation. Obviously you need a sequencing software... and out of the thousands available, it only supports a small fraction of those.
Appearance: Very kool interface.
