Washburn Guitars
For over one hundred years, Washburn has built more than just great guitars, they've built a history. The Washburn tradition of craftsmanship and innovation has withstood the tests of economics, brand competition and fashion. Since their birth in Chicago in 1883, the name Washburn has been branded into the world's finest stringed instruments. If your interest in guitars borders on passion, you will settle for nothing less than a Washburn.

The 1990s marked incredible growth for Washburn. It also saw the inclusion of some outstanding guitar innovators in the Washburn family: Nuno Bettencourt, Dimebag Darrell, Roger Waters, Bootsy Collins and Jennifer Batten have the distinction of being some of the few artists ever to be honored with a Washburn signature model guitar.

In the twenty-first century, Washburn is continuing to build its history. Now more than ever, an investment in a Washburn guitar is a special gift for yourself or someone you know.

Washburn History

Some stories demand to be told. Others are simply content on being heard. Heard through music, through lyrics, through a cultural revolution. This is the story of Washburn Guitars. Steeped in the tradition of fine instrument making, Washburn Guitar’s dynamic 120-history began in Chicago in 1883. The original guitar factory was located just blocks away from Maxwell Street.

In the early 1920s, Maxwell Street itself would emerge as the epicenter of a musical movement. Often considered the first entry point for thousands of African-Americans arriving from the Mississippi Delta, Maxwell Street became a hotbed for Delta Blues in its most raw and dramatic form. Newcomers and established musicians alike would listen and jam with one another in an atmosphere void of commercial influence. Once recorded, this powerful, emotional style of music would not only become the dominant form of blues but would radically change the emerging sound of rock and roll.

There, on Maxwell Street, as well as in alleyways, city sidewalks, bars, and honky-tonks around the country, Washburn guitars were embraced as the very embodiment and reflective spirit of the hard-working musicians who played them as well as the employees who designed and crafted them. It is the same spirit that guides Washburn to this day.

The history of Washburn Guitars is the history of a wide range of musicians. From blues players who shaped rock ‘n roll to multi-platinum recording artists to emerging guitar virtuosos. It is a history that can be heard and experienced every time you turn on the radio or listen to a live performance. It is a history built by skilled craftsmen and musicians who share one common love–a passion for the guitar.

Washburn continues to be a consistent leader in combining design, innovation, and technology to deliver the rich, bold sounds for a vast musical landscape.

Subject:Stunning appearance, good sound, cheap action, needs setup
Quality: I ordered a natural finish but they sent me the black one by mistake. My family said, "keep the black" so I did. The guitar is truly stunning in appearance. It is small and lightweight, easy to hold for hours. The frets and neck inlay trim look cheap up close. The stock strings are very poor quality and should be changed immediately. This guitar is more about flashy looks than it is about playability. Overall quality is good. It seems very sturdy despite the light weight. The hardshell case is cheesey and paper-like. The guitar and case were dependable enough to survive the UPS journey.
Reliability: My guitar is brand new. But it did hold up to about 3 hours of hard banging the first night it was here!
Overall: I rank as semi-pro with 35 years experience and have played many guitars of various quality. This one feels and plays like a cheap guitar. The appearance of this guitar is stunning. The natural sound quality is very, very good. It's warm and mid range, lacks deep base, hard strums sound great; individual strings blend beautifully when playing chords. The tuner gets you only in the ballpark with the green LED. I compared the tuning with my Korg CA-20 chromatic tuner and the guitar reads plus red. So if the rest of the band tunes to another tuner, you're going to sound flat. The action is high and it needs a professional setup to feel and play for gigs and long jam sessions. Electronics are good. Volume and tone setings are quick and easy. The electronics nowhere produce the same quality as the natural guitar sound. I found that setting both the guitar and the amplifier to dead flat sounds best and most natural.
Playability and Feel: The Washburn D10SCE feels cheap and light. The thin neck is curiously offset with a fairly wide fretboard. The strings are set high above the neck and action on 1,2 and 3 is difficult. String 6, 5 and 4 play great at lower frets. It takes experience and strength to form perfect bar chords. This guitar is no "Cadillac", right out of the box and will require a professional setup. Once setup, I imagine it will play much, much better.
Tone: Unplugged, the tone is absolutely brilliant. There is a warm, midrange resonance that is very pleasing. It's not overly loud and lacks deep bass. Crisp, new, high quality strings will sound sweet once the guitar is setup to play. Electronically, through the amplifier, the guitar sounds very natural and what you'd expect to hear. The pickup does not sound as good as a professional mic, however. Electronically, this system does not produce the same quality as the natural (unplugged) sound. On the plus side, the volume and tone controls are easy to use and give you an instant tonal change while playing live venues.
Finish: The guitar looks amazing. The finish is perfect and mirror-like. There are no imperfections, no blemishes, no swirl marks, no smudges nor dings (yet). Any musician would be proud to play a guitar this beautiful. Again, this guitar is all about looks with mediocre playability.
Action: Action out of the box is disappointing. If you have played high quality, professional guitars, you know immediately you have a beginner guitar in your hands. However there is hope. It can be setup to play better. Overall, this is a guitar for a new player, good enough for a semi-pro and would make a perfect "guest" guitar or backup. It is a good deal for the money but still not a "dream guitar". Try before you buy is the best advice I can give. Go to a music store and compare others. If you get this guitar, be prepared to get a "setup". Good-luck on your decision.
