Great touch pads....
Quality:
As stated in the subject line....the touch/beat pads are excellent. In fact, I think they are superior to the MPC500, 1000, etc. They are much softer and easy on the fingers. The entire unit seems durable and long-lasting.
Features:
Not to sound redundant- but again, the XR20 soft pads are the best feature of this unity. The samples are good, too. If AKAI could deliver a unit that had MPC features with these pads...they'd have the best drum machine/sampler in the history of the universe.
Sound:
Good sounds. 700 is more than enough. My feeling has always been, if you need more than just a few sample genre types, you probably need to spend more time focusing on getting one original sound than using everything under the sun. Great artists are popular because of their sound- not because they sound like 20 different groups at the same time. Use presets wisely!!!
Overall:
AKAI is, excuse the over-used phrase, an "industry standard" for beat production/sampling/etc. There's no reason to go elsewhere- because you won't find anything better or more well organized. Start off with the XR20, buy something more expensive later-- and you'll likely find yourself still using the XR20.
Value:
Yes, the unit is well worth the money. I'm not a mathematician- but I'd estimate that 70% of other beat machines on the market that cost more don't match the AKAI XR20 in terms of quality/cost ratio.
Appearance:
The beat pads are big...and, if you've read the statements above...you'll know that they have the best touch on the market.
