Bones from Santa Cruz, CA
Quality Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable? Product was made really well - solidly built. No loose knobs and everything works perfectly. Took a little work to learn how to use but it was time well spent. Great product for the price. Features What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could? Comes with a lot of connections on the back - stereo DI and line outs, send returns for putting another effects unit into it, built in tuner, SP/DIF out, clock. Very versatile - can be used live or in the studio and with lot's of options to connect to mixers, sound boards, DI, etc. Tons of features for dialing in the right sound. Sound How is its Tone? Sound is great once you learn how to tweak it. Some of the built in settings are not great but about half are. Can be used for keyboards and electric guitar. I learned how to set the Master Gain - you need to tweak that depending on your bass guitars output. I let a guy use it during a show and he started out getting clipping until I came up and lowered the Master Gain setting. If the clip light comes on you are sending it too hot a signal and it will distort and sound "farty". When this thing is set up properly the tone is excellent. Also, for live play you need to set to the L3 setting. Read the Manual to understand it and it will be the best pre-amp for the money. Overall Your general opinion of this product. This is a great product for the price. I got one that had been opened (non-factory re-sealed) so got a deal. This is probably the best under-rated pre-amp out there. Some people dis it mainly due to not understanding how to use it. You need to learn how to connect it up and how to set the operating mode (studio or live mode) and how to adjust the Master Gain setting. The manual explains all of this but it's not laid out in one place, you gotta read the whole thing. Also, good info online on how to use it optimally. Once you learn it and dial in the settings you want this thing is amazing for the price. I have not used a pre-amp or effects unit on my bass rig before so this was new to me. I ended up putting it into L3 configuration, then plugging the left line out into the power amp input on my head - bypassing my amp heads normal pre-amp. I also plug an XLR cable from the Vamp DI out into the sound board for our PA and get the Ultra-G bass cab simulation out the PA subwoofer. Amazing! Playability and Feel How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing? Sounds good - easy to use once you learn the manual. Lots of good info online and on the Behringer user group site. Good knobs - controls fairly easy to get used to. Tone Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin? Fantastic. This can make an average bass head sound really great if you bypass the bass heads pre-amp and instead inject this guy into the bass heads power amp in and just use it that way. You can plug it directly into the bass head and set all your pre-amp settings to 12 oclock or middle but you'll still get coloration from the bass heads pre-amp. Best to bypass the bass head pre-amp and inject directly into the power amp. If you do that it sound great. Also sounds great DI to a mixer run through a PA with a sub-woofer. Finish How did the stain or paint job look? Nice looking. Especially in a dark club the lights on this thing look so cool! Nice silver looking front. The only minor issue is the lights on the knobs are hard to see in daylight so get your pre-sets all dialed in because it may be hard to tweak if you are in sunlight. Action How was the action out of the box? No action since it's a pre-amp not a bass guitar (duh).
Just get it
