General What is your overall opinion of this product? Great value, with a few caveats. I've previously owned an American made SVT-CL, and my girlfriend has one of the current SVT-CL's made by LOUD technologies. Quality How is the quality of the product? Was it well made? The construction of the amp is almost exactly like an SVT. The preamp and power amps are in separate chassis. The PCB's look solid, and the transformers are beefy. The only place I see corners cut was in the choice of the material they used for the cabinet. It's not plywood, or fibreboard. It's almost like laminated paper, or Masonite or something similar. I guess it's strong enough, but mine wasn't particularly rigid and you could sort of rock the whole cabinet left and right. I pulled the guts out of the cabinet, and drilled every corner and put in drywall screws, and now it is rigid enough, although if you were to abuse it on a tour, you might want to make your own case for it. The only other difference I noticed was the cooling fan. The Ampeg SVT uses a pretty decent fan that draws air through the amp and expels it out the front. The Bugera has a couple of medium size computer fans that take air in through the front screen and move it through the amp. Features Are the features on the product what you were expecting? What are your favorite features? It's pretty much a straightforward copy of an SVT-CL, which doesn't have much of a feature set to begin with. It delivers in tone, in my opinion. The only thing different feature wise is the "Infinium" technology, which is a computer controlled auto-biasing for each of the power tubes. It seems to work fine...no different than a self (cathode) biasing amp really. Bugera claims that failed tubes can be replaced individually, instead of as a matched set. If that's true, than the money saved would be substantial. Getting a nice set of six matched 6550's is usually expensive. I like the winged-C brand, and that runs north of $300 for a matched set (6) of power tubes. Sound How is the sound quality? How does the sound compare to other products you've use? Sound quality is fantastic. Idling, with my bass volume down, there is absolutely no hum at all. My girlfriend's SVT-CL still has a bit of hum. I think the SVT-CL might have slightly more power but it was recently retubed with decent tubes, so that might explain it. Feel Are the controls logically laid out? The control layout is exactly like an Ampeg SVT-CL. Pretty simple and effective. Tone How is the tone? Distortion vs clean? Tone is good. The preamp has that "growl" when pushed hard, which is typically why people want these amps. No complaints. Value Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range? I got a "blemished" model for 25% the normal price, and I think that makes it a fantastic deal, especially with free shipping.
