Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
Very dependable. It stays in tune, has good intonation, a stable, dependable licensed floyd rose, 24 frets, and all the other traits you'd expect from a much more expensive guitar. I generally prefer neck-through (or ESP's set-through construction), yet I find this guitar's bolt-on neck joint to be quite comfortable.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
I got mine used while on my honeymoon in late 2010. I got it because it was only $200 and I needed A guitar while I was away from home, and originally expected to just resell it at a pawn shop before I left to come back home. However I fell in love with this guitar and decided to take the risk and bring it with me on the plane on the way back home because I grew so attached to it over the 2 and half weeks I was away.
General
Your general opinion of this product.
If THIS is what a $300 ESP is like, that says a lot about the high quality you can expect from ESP guitars. I wouldn't hesitate to take this guitar on stage with me - it is an awesome guitar to play, with a stable, super-expressive tremolo bridge.
Great guitars need not cost a fortune, and ESP proves this once again with the M-103FM.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
It immediately became my "main" 6-string guitar because it's so comfortable and enjoyable to play. I adjusted the action on it right away and it feels great to play.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
I feel it has a fairly well-balanced tone, especially for stock pickups. It's got enough brightness to provide good definition and clarity, yet with enough mids and lows to sound full. The 5-way switch and HSS pickup configuration offer quite a bit of tonal flexibility.
So overall, I'd say the stock pickups sound pretty decent. They're not super-driven, but with the right amp and effects settings, you can get an extremely heavy sound out of this guitar if you want to. Yet you can also get very nice clean sounds without it breaking up. They're stock pickups.
Of course, you'll ALWAYS do better with upgrade pickups (DiMarzio, Duncan, EMG, Bareknuckle, etc). The single coil pickups are a bit noisy (which is common for all single coils). Even despite the noise from the single-coils, I am pretty impressed with the tone quality that the stock pickups provide. For the price, it's definitely more value for your money.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
I think the see-through black finish looks great: slick, and classy. It's got quite a nice flamed maple finish - not what you'd expect on such an inexpensive guitar.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
I got mine used, so I don't know how the action comes. I lowered it as low as it can go without string buzz (which I always do on every guitar).
