General What is your overall opinion of this product? I like it; It invites me to see what I can do with it. Its feel is like a solid mahogany bass. I like where they put the pickups, and I like having just the two knobs and three-position switch. Quality What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music? The joints look very good and I like the way the binding meets the ends of the frets. The E and A strings were weak sounding, with rattles and slight chorusing. Tipping the bass back and forth made clunks; the bigger pickup was loose in its cavity. Without enough padding under it, it was rattling against the pickup cover. Extra padding raised it closer to the strings, and it sounds much better. The pickups aren't weak at all; you can raise the poles but it doesn't need much. The new strings are settling in, chorusing going away, full range of the instrument is starting to be good. The case is nice-looking, good quality, but the fragrance is too strong. Features Are the features on the product what you were expecting? What are your favorite features? The electronics go with the instrument like it's all one thing - I like that. I didn't expect such a nice high range; makes me wish I could have another whole-step. Feel Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing? The bass feels solid, like it's not going anywhere; it's not light. It balances pretty well. The neck has a good feel; I like it. Tone How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin? The tone is nice; pickups sound a little clearer and harder than I was expecting - the neck pickup isn't boomy. You can change it a lot with your right-hand position and angle of fingers. Finish How did the stain or paint job look? The finish looks good and even; no complaints. The clear-finished mahogany looks good on the back and neck. Value Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range? I got a price that was only offered for a short time. I woudn't have paid much more, though. The new Signature model looks like it might be more comfortable at the high end of the fingerboard. Playability How was the action out of the box? The action felt natural to play on, I'm not changing it. The lower 2 strings still don't sound fully good but are improving. They're good strings, going to keep them on.
top of the line

Quality Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable? Excellent Gibson USA quality. Thin finish, perfect fretwork and binding. Features What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could? A hollowbody bass that sounds good when fingerpicked. Two pickups for more than one tone. Marked down, however, for having no way to blend the two pickups. A bass should a volume pot for each pickup. General Your general opinion of this product. Very good, general, unspecialized bass guitar. I hope to see this become a standard. I noticed they brought back the volute. Good idea. The last Gibson bass I ordered came to me with the neck already broken. Tone Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin? All Gibson, all the time. Think Doobie Brothers or Rick Danko, not Flea. The bridge pickup does give some nasal honk without thining out, if you need to sit higher in the mix. The best, however, is the E string gives that pedal tone that just wraps around and soaks under everything. Finish How did the stain or paint job look? Almost perfect. The ony blemish is around the control plate. Right up there with the best.
Great Bass
