General What is your overall opinion of this product? I'm comparing this guitar to the 2007 '68RI Explorer I also own and play. The Gov't series has Dirty Fingers+ (DF+) PUs. The '68RI has 498T and 500T PUs. Other than the color and the "Government Series" logo on the pickguard, that's the only difference between the two. The DF+ PUs are overwound by what I'd call too much. they are muddy and have too much midrange compared to their bass and treble response. They work OK for barre chords but are not articulate enough for arpeggios. Think Motorhead "I Got Mine" - you can't hear the single string accents in the melody when you play it on this guitar because it's soooo mid-heavy. Output is so high that it saturates the tubes on my 5W Fender Champion 600 at any volume setting over "1". If you want a clean tone with a tube amp, pick another guitar. Quality What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music? Top notch Gibson build quality. No complaints. I was in Nashville when the G-Men raided the Gibson factory. Shortly thereafter I bought a '68RI Flying V with a Toasted Maple fretboard because I'll be damned if Gibson is going to suffer that sort of B/S. Once Gibson offered the Gov't Series, I figured the least I could do was reaffirm my pledge. Feel Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing? It's an Explorer, so the balance and stretch are as good as possible. Playability is awesome. Tone... not so much. Tone How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin? PUs are too overwound and midrangy for my taste. 498T/500T is a better choice. Finish How did the stain or paint job look? Gov't Tan Satin finish was excellent. Value Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range? $1000 for a 1 of 300 collectible guitar is a good deal. Playability How was the action out of the box? Playability was good out of the box. I like really low action, like Carvin low. It took some tweaking but I dialed it in. It has screaming fast action now.
