Overall good quality, but had a string stick in the nut because its too tight, had to tighten pickup switch and input jack, both loose after one month of playing. Two small paint blemishes.

Great guitar, but had to tighten a few things up that I shouldn't had to.

How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
I love this guitar.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Pick-ups are incredible. Sounds great through my Marshall.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Overall good, two small blemishes, I'll probably do worse myself at gigs, but on a brand new Gibson? C'mon man.

Overall the guitar is built like a tank. The tone pot is my only concern. Paint could be better.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
The guitar itself is built like a tank. My only worry is the tone pot. It seems to move a little too much in either direction. But if I need to, I will replace it. The toggle switch wouldn't stay in the up position, so I had to take the pick guard off and the switch was up against the cavity wall. After I adjusted it, it seemed to work fine.

This is a great guitar. I bought it here at AMS. It is a little overpriced in my opinion. The quality seems to lag a little behind the price. But still a great guitar. Comes with a really good Canadian made case.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
The guitar is heavy, but that is where the tone comes from. It's not as heavy as a Les Paul though. It is real easy to play. Fast an smooth neck. The controls are in the perfect locations for me.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
This guitar has hot pickups. Has a nice dark punchy tone. Great for Brutal music.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
The ebony finish is ok. The finish on the edges of the body are wavy and runny looking, but you can only see the flaws up close.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
The action was perfect right out of the box! Not too high and not too low. It may be a little high for some people but not me.

The guitar feels great with its low action and and its perfect neck 1960's neck you are able fly over the frets. In the picture it looks big, it is log but its actually pretty slim.

Sure, it's awesome- BUT...

Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
Sure. It's a chunk of mahogany with no tremolo. And I've never seen a Gibson with shoddy soldering, unlike Fenders. Not a lot that a piece of wood this big can't absorb and laugh at.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
We all know that Gibson headstocks break. If you have it out of the case, eventually you're going to break a headstock. Mine doesn't come out to the living room much, because I saw my Dad scream and curse over 2 Les Paul headstocks when I was a kid. But with no tremolo system, everything else is pretty solid.
Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
Well, it's a Gibson Explorer. The necks on them haven't changed much in about 40 years. Gibson seems to think that their original neck profiles are so perfect that they don't need updating. What a crock. I bought mine almost 2 years ago for 1,049.00. (They've gone up 350 dollars since then -Oct. '07) And you know what I play at home? My Hamer Standard and Ibanez Destroyers. Lighter, faster necks, and more controllable outputs. Gibson IS a sweet name to have on your headstock, but it seems that the name is all you're paying for.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
In my opinion, this guitar needs a much faster neck. Some like the classic Gibson thicknesses, but my Ibanez' blow the Explorer out of the water in terms of speed. If I were in GG Allins band, I might appreciate being able to swing it at someone and feel safe, but for playing, it feels like a log to me.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
The 496 and 500 pickups in the Explorers were apparently made for metal. Volume knob adjustment is necessary for any subtleties. It will definitely let you know it's turned up when you turn it up. Interesting pickups, really.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
I do like the finish on my ebony model. I gave it a good going over after the intonation debacle, looking for a reason to be more upset. I was impressed. There was a little potting squeezing out of the neck pickup, but I scraped it off.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
I had a real beef with this issue. Not only was it out of tune, which is understandable, but it was SEVERELY out of intonation. It took me two hours to intonate it. It says on the checklist that it was "professionally" set up at the factory. Set up on a stand and looked at, perhaps...

Only a Gibson Is Good Enough!
Don Sloan from Tulsa, OK, USA
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
I've never had any doubt about Gibson's quality and this guitar doesn't give me any doubts either. It feels solid and it will probably outlive me.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
Well, I haven't had it long enough to rate the reliability since I've only had it one day now, but I'm sure it will live up to the Gibson name just as my other Gibsons have.
Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
Overall, I love this guitar. It is well balanced and versatile.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
The neck plays just as easy as my SG, and overall feel is very comfortable and balanced. Given it was my first Explorer, I was expecting it to feel awkward but the balance is perfect and it's very comfortable to play, with the weight being somewhere in between my SG and Les Paul.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
The pickups are fairly hot making it easy to get pinch harmonics all day long. But roll the volume back a little and it begins to clean up, presenting a nice mellow warm tone you'd expect to hear from a Gibson.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Very nice black finish, that you can easily see yourself in. There was only one small blemish where it looked like something got trapped under the finish before painting, but it's so small I had to shine a light on it just right to even see it.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
The action was spot on right out of the box! All I had to do was tune it up and start playing.
