General What is your overall opinion of this product? Beautiful guitar, limited production run, and a Gibson? Nothing more to say! Quality What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music? I bought this Explorer with the purpose of gigging with it however now that I have it in hand I'm afraid to bring it out of the house for fear that something bad will happen to it. Its a stunning guitar and sounds great either clean or dirty. Feel Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing? I have a smaller hand and this neck it perfect for me. It's not the typical Explorer scale neck that is much fatter and chunkier. The position of the three way switch is a bonus as well as the volume control moved from the traditional middle position to the front knob. Much easier to switch pups and turn up or down. Tone How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin? Pickups are super hot but still have a great clean sound when needed. I play all types of music from classic rock to hard rock to easy listening to funk. These pickups sound great for everything I play. Finish How did the stain or paint job look? I bought this as a 'blemished' item with a substantial amount off of the retail price. With a guaranteed 45-day return policy I really had nothing to lose, especially with an out-of-production guitar that I could not find anywhere locally. When I got it I was pleasantly surprised to have to REALLY look the guitar over to find the blemishes, which turned out to be two extremely tiny marks on the black painted back edge of the bottom. For the amount I saved and the 'blemishes' I found I couldn't be happier. Value Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range? For the price I paid (discounted for 'blemish') I got a great deal. It was less than the going retail price of a regular issue Explorer, let alone a signature model with limited production numbers. Playability How was the action out of the box? Can't answer this one seeing as I took it to my set up guy before I even got it home. He did a very minor adjustment to the saddle and it didn't appear as if anything major was out of whack.
Great new addition to my arsenal

General What is your overall opinion of this product? American Musical has done it again. Great customer service and you have to love the 12 ez-pay system. No interest! Its why I keep doing business with them. The guitar arrived via overnight air. It was packaged well, no damage to the case or instrument. Quality What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music? Opening the case I was welcomed with the aroma of the Gibson vanilla smell and nitro finish, gotta love that new guitar smell. Visually, pictures do not do the finish justice. There is plenty of wood grain to be seen through the go-gold burst finish. I would give the workmanship a 9.5 out 10. Simply because I have several PRS guitars and nothing else compares. There are a few small sanding marks on the higher frets but nothing visible without the strings off and you cannot feel them. The paint job and finish is a 10. There is however heavy spray over the back of the headstock where the serial numbers are, but I imagine the nitro finish will sink in overtime. According to the serial number the guitar was just made in august and is number 120. Feel Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing? The neck is a perfect shape. This is my first explorer so I couldnt say if it is typical.. but its somewhere between my early 62 les paul jr and my esp jeff hanneman sig. In other words, its very comfortable, fast not to thick, not to thin. The wiring of the controls is a welcome plus. Tone How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin? amazingly enough it will play anything from ac/dc, mastadon, slayer, lamb of god to SRV, Yngwie, zappa. Very very versatile going through my kemper profiling amp and you gotta love the coil tap features. Value Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range? I would say the instrument is priced very competitively, especially if you get AMS to knock of 5% or so. Because of the binding, tricky finish, pickups and wiring its a great deal. I suppose thats why its been discontinued. Ive always wanted an older school looking, solid mahogany explorer with classy appointments but couldnt find one until now. Playability How was the action out of the box? Action was about right for most people I would say, but I do prefer mine slammed. Everybody is going to do tweaks to any instrument they purchase.

General What is your overall opinion of this product? Over the years I've owned a few Explorers of various brands. This is my new favorite, hands down! Quality What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music? Checked this guitar out pretty thoroughly right out of the case/box. Flawless. Time was spent in the making of this axe. Feel Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing? Incredibly smooth and fast neck. Tone How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin? Very versatile. Just about any tone you can imagine with all the different configurations available on this axe. It has a great chime to it that gives that beautiful clean acoustic sound with the volume backed off a bit. Then slowly add the growl by turning her up. Finish How did the stain or paint job look? Absolutely gorgeous. I have yet to take her out of the case without some one saying "WOW". Value Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range? This guitar plays and sounds like some that I've played that cost thousands (that's right!) more. Playability How was the action out of the box? Wasn't my preferred strings, but once I put mine on, there she was.

General Your general opinion of this product. Great feeling and looking guitar. Nice weight to it very comfortable to play. Quality Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable? This guitar is very well made. The binding is nice the Nitrocellulose lacquer gives it a beautiful shine. The headstock features the gold color on the body as well. This is hard to see in all of the pictures besides the ones where Bill Kelliher is holding it. The Truss Rod cover has the words "Golden Axe", inscribed on it. Tone Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin? The tone is very raw and powerful. The Lace Nitro Hemi's are my new favorite High Output pickup. I actually had to to double check to make sure they were passive. By far the loudest set of pickups I've played in my 12 years of playing guitar. The coil tapping is very nice and very accurate to the single coil tones I can get on my strat. The bridge sounds a bit more twangy though like position 4.5 on a blade switch on a strat. I can get any Rock or metal tone I want out of them. It's a little bit more difficult to get like a more volume based rock sound like AC/DC vs your more gain oriented music like Black Sabbath. I can get perfect Sabbath, The Sword, Sleep, Mastodon, Pantera, Mettalica, Dio, Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Seether, Breaking Benjamin, etc. All the type of stuff I play on multiple guitars out of this. It's incredibly versatile. I have been having some difficulty getting like a good Clutch tone like the fat blues rock to, but I think that has more to do with my Amp. Finish How did the stain or paint job look? The finish is beyond beautiful. The top almost looks Saturated or wet before the lacquer was applied. It's beautiful and no picture does it any justice.

Quality Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable? First Gibson I have ever owned. Very well made guitar and worth the money. General Your general opinion of this product. This golden axe explorer is with out a doubt the best looking, gorgeous guitar I have ever seen. Tone Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin? The Lace Nitro-Hemi pickups have good harmonics, really push my amp(Bogner Alchemist). Guitar has nice mid range and low end with gain. Guitar suprising sounds great with clean tone. Finish How did the stain or paint job look? As beautiful as this guitar looks in the online pics, it looks even prettier in person. No flaws in the finish.
