The best Les Paul I've ever owned
By: jazzman from Canada

Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
It was produced to be worn looking. In spite of that I consider it to be very well constructed.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
I've only had it a couple of weeks, but I've had other Gibson Les Paul studios so I'm not worried in the least.
General
Your general opinion of this product.
I'm a bit of a minimalist so I really like the no frills approach of this guitar. Kudos for Gibson for offering this Les Paul. I feel it is in NO way inferior to any Les Paul out there.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
I don't like thin necks usually, but this profile works really well for me. The controls are like any other Les Paul.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
I used to play Teles mostly. These pickups seem to lie right in the middle of tele pickups and humbuckers. They're probably a little more rauncy too. And extremely balanced. Rear pickup not too thin, gutsy, while the neck pickup is mellow and laid back.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
As I previously mentioned, these guitars are meant to look a bit aged and worn. I have the honey burst, and I just love to see the grain. And it is very easy to keep clean.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
I bought it used so I set it up to my liking.

Right out of the box, playable. Usual Gibson beautiful quality and workmanship. My first Gibson. I feel like a kid with a new Mustang or something. I don't know you had to be there. I'm happy....
Playability and Feel

It's a little heavier than I'm used, but I'm used to playing an acoustic....

Bright and snappy. Pickups seemed pretty warm.

Good Gibson Tone for a Good Price!
By: Semi-Pro Studio Player from Virginia

Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
I wouldn't technically call the sound bright but it is nice. It has more of a raw, mellow sound. The P-90s don't give you quite the depth as the standard Gibson humbuckers but after replacing the bridge pickup I am much happier with the sound. You can't expect a BMW when you paid for a Volkswagen.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
The finish is worn and dull and there are some worn places on the corner. But this was advertised as a tribute model so Gibson wanted to produce a product that looked like you've had it since the 60s. Personally I would have preferred a better finish and let me wear it out instead of buying one that looks like I played it for years. BUT, this is a studio model and is not designed for flash.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
This guitar was about 90% in tune out of the box. As I said earlier, I love the 60s neck. It's so much more comfortable than the 50. The action is good as well.
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
It always seems like you can tell if a guitar is made in the USA or somewhere else. The finish is dull and does have worn corners so if you're looking for a bright, flashy LP then you should look somewhere else. But I bought this guitar for playing and not as a show piece. I can't accurately comment on dependability as I've only had it 3 months.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
So far, it's been great. The tuners are awesome and were better than what I was expecting for a lower priced Gibson.
General
Your general opinion of this product.
I purchased this axe about 3 months ago and I fell in love with it as soon as I took it out of the box. I've had LP's but they've all had that chunky 50s neck. This guitar has a nice, slim 60s neck that makes both chording and noting much easier.
It comes with the nicest gig bag I've EVER seen but I really prefer a hardshell case for travel.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
This LP feels fast thanks to the 60s neck. I like the control knobs that come with it. They don't feel cheep when you turn them unlike some other brands.

Bought the worn Honeyburst, the picture doesn't do it justice. Very well made, plays great and intonation great with no modifications.
I own several American made Fenders as well and this guitar is second to none.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
The neck is fatter than any of my Fenders but not as fat as my PRS. Feels nice in my hands and not a problem adjusting from any of my other guitars to this. Plays great!
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Awesome tone. See my description above under "sound".

When I first heard about these Les Paul's being released, I held my batted breath....'a Gibson Les Paul for under $900.00?' I thought to myself...'No way!' Great tone, nice balanced feel to the guitar, not too heavy so my fretting hand won't go numb after a three hour gig! I'm sold!

Fret sprout! At least, some of them sprouted. Taking it in next week to file some of them more rounded than they should be. The volumn and tone controls are more responsive than any guitar I have owned. Nice!
Tone

These P-90 are very nice...I play througth a Crate V-33 head witt a custom built 4 x 12. Nice mids.

Overall a great quality guitar. One complaint. The nut was not dressed properly on my guitar when I got it and the guitar wouldn't stay in tune. I dressed the nut with nut files and put some graphite in the slots and now this thing stays in tune for weeks. As soon as you touch this guitar is says Quality.

This is an incredible guitar...in my opinion, one of Gibson's best. Light weight, great neck feel, excellent fret job and hot P90's. Vintage LP tone in spades plus wicked light weight to boot.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Feels great with the satin finished 60's neck. What could feel better? This is a Les Paul we are talking about.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Warm, raucous, snarly tone out of the bridge P90. Warm, singing, fat tone out of the neck pup. Warm, thick tone when playing on both pups.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Nice paint job. Satin finish. Worn finish. I don't like the worn finish that much. It is like a false phony badge of honor that I have not yet earned with this guitar. The satin finish I dig...just don't see how people could want a worn finish unless they are trying to posture as a false self and pretend that they actually put their time and sweat into the instrument.

Perfect Action right out of the box. Medium low action

New Gold Top, just as good if not better than my old Gold Top!!!

Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
The Quality is outstanding,..It's a Gibson!!! It is a very well made guitar, even though it is on the lite side, it doesn't feel like a toy like o many other guitars do. I'm very sure it is a dependable guitar, if it is like anything else that Gibson makes.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
It's a Gibson!,... thats a no brainer. The oldest Gibson I own is an L7, bought by my father in 1948, that makes it 63 years old and it's neck is as true as could be asked for. I feel certain that this "60's Tribute model" is going to be just as outstanding of a guitar as that L7. I just bought the Gold Top, but if it being a Gibso it holds true, I am sure that there will be no great issues ( I expect none), that can't be solved by Gibson, after all they do make a great guitar as well as stand by their product!!!
General
Your general opinion of this product.
I have never been so pleased with a guitar as I am with this new "Gibson Gold Top 60's Tribute model"! One of the finest guitars that I have ever owned,... but then, it's a Gibson!!!
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
I am an older musician,... to say that I was at "Woodstock"!!! I have owned other Les Pauls that would tear my neck muscles up if I were to play one all night long (these days). However this "60's Tribute" is very managable,.. feels more like holding an "Gibson SG" than a "Les Paul". The neck is very fast, I have no problem switching from my Tele to the Gold Top and finishing out the night,... it has a great neck!!! I an use to the control pots being set up like on a Gibson, or a Tele., I have no problem working with them, as a matter of fact, it is what I prefer!!!
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
I play a combination of "Rock" and "Blues", with a mixture of "Motown", with a working group "King James and the Verse". So I have quite a veriation of tone that I need at hand. The P90's are warm and "Bluesy" as well as "Crisp and glassy", when need be, and everything in between. The "Gibson 60's Tribute" may not be a one guitar that does all (thats why I own so many), but it and my Tele., are the main stay, work horses in my book.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
The finish is different than on a higher priced Les Paul, but it also has a charm and look of it's own. I have read about an alcohol smell, from some of the reports, but I noticed nothing like that at all with my Gold Top. I am very pleased with the finish especially the way that the back of the neck gets polished and shines after playing it for a while, .... the neck is no problem to,..as you say "Break in". It has a great looking finish for the price.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
The action is fantastic, right out of the box it rocked. I played with it a little (I do my own setups), but saw little if any room for adjustment. I normally use "DR pure nickel/Blues" .009's on my Tele's, but my "60's Tribute" plays best with .010's, I think you could even fudge .011's on it and not tear up your fingers after a nights gig. As I said before, the action is great right out of the box!!!

Very bright. The P-90's are not a real strong like a humbucker would be. The bridge pickup is a little on the thin sounding side.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Satin finish. Mine is the gold top. Looks good. The back appears to be lightly coated with a satin clear which is fine for me. The neck never gets sticky like the smooth painted finished guitars. I think one of the reasons the body resonates so much is the lack of all the healy layers of paint on the traditional LP's

The paint on this Les Paul is just a light coat of lacquer or oil. The pores in the wood are not filled and is not sanded and buffed to a high luster which is labor intensive. This is probably what keeps the cost down on this guitar.

Looks beautiful, plays like silk and sounds heavenly.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
It is very light (less than a standard Les Paul and lighter than my as Telecaster). The controls are smooth and no PC board.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
The P90's have "girth" but don't lose definition. You either LOVE them or you don't. These are the real deal.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
The best "worn" finish I've ever had and that includes the faded Les Paul mahogany and faded SG Special. As smooth as Fender's Highway One series. The Honeyburst is absolutely perfect and the neck and back are to die for.

How did the stain or paint job look?
the finish is "warn" so it's very thin. I like the matte type finish and the way the neck feels without a heavy finish on it.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
too hight for my taste... but, action is highly personal, and everyone has their own preference. it was definitely very playable right out of the box.
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
I've only had it a short time, but I the build quality seems to be top notch.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
it's a Gibson, so the quality is almost assured. well made and solid. should last a long time.

for the money, you aren't likely to find a better value for a USA made guitar. great tones, easy playability and a clean, stripped down look. an excellent value!
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
the 60's slim taper neck feels awesome! the light neck finish allows you to move up and down the neck quickly.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
I am able to get a lot of different tones from this guitar. with a bit of overdrive and using the neck pickup, I can get a big, warm bluesy tone that has a nice bite and isn't too dark. flip to the bridge pickup and you've got a nice, bright rock tone, perfect for classic rock or blues rock. in the neck position with a clean tone, you can get a really warm, mellow jazz tone. in the middle position, using both pickups, you can almost get a hendrix vibe. the only drawback for some will be that there is some noise associated with P-90s.

This guitar is very well made. I was surprised Gibson did not include the wrench to adjust the neck. Luckily I had one from my more expensive Gibson's.

Received today so we will see. I expect the guitar to hold up well.

Great guitar, fun to play. If you know what to expect with a stripped down version LP you will not be dissapointed.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Once you setup the action the way you play you will fly on this guitar. This LP has the 60's slim neck simular to the neck shape of the late 60's SG.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
P-90 pickup have a sound all their own. Hot for P-90's
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
This is a stripped down LP, chambered. Guitar has a very vintage look.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
I like very low action. The setup from the factory was very high. I adjusted the trust rod and lowered the bridge. Plays great, you will not want to put this guitar down. The Plek system setup is great! No buzz and intonation spot on. I will never buy another Gibson unless it comes from the factory with the Plek setup.

This would be a great budget priced guitar if it weren't for the treatment of the neck and finish
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Light weight. The neck is way chunkier than the 60's necks I have played
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Bright and snappy. Good body resonance
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
this is where it is really lacking. The back of the neck is very open grained with no sealer. Very rough grain. Has a thin coat of something that smelled more like rubbing oil or shellac. Very raw feel. I would have paid the extra 3-4 hundred bucks to have the neck sealed and a heavier coat of what ever it is to smooth the neck finish.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
Good medium low action

100% Gibson quality.

Just got it but I am sure it will last like all other Gibsons so.
General
Your general opinion of this product.
It's got all the quality of a Gibson LP Standard or Deluxe minus the fancy-looking frills! 100% pure Gibson quality at half (or less) the cost, plus a GREAT 60s slim neck like that found on the SG. What more could you want?
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Great! Slim neck and lighter then other LPs. Lighter then my American standard ash body Strat and Tele.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Thick, fat yet bright P90 sound. No hum to speak of, even in the studio.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Grand slightly worn looking (just slightly though) finish.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
Great right from the factory but I did a setup anyway.
