I own several Gibsons, this is probably the best finish on any I have owned. Fit & finish on this one is also better. Tuners great, Chrome great.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
Looked under the hood, has the usual Gibson plug in circuit board. Can't imagine that failing at all, really solid.
Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
I have been playing guitar for 42 years and never owned an SG. I just thought it wasn't me. After playing live a few times I realized it's light, plays like butter and can peal the paint of the walls.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
My only complaint about Gibson... and I hope they someday get it. Every new Gibson I have purchased is set up like a crossbow... I swear you can shoot arrows with them. The tailpiece is sticking up like a park bench and the bridge is stupid-high. If I was going to use a bow to play it maybe. Didn't have to touch the truss rod on this one but took a little time to drop everything down. If I tried it out in a retail location I would have put it right down. Now that it's set up correctly it plays like a dream. Intonation is right on.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
I like that it's different from my LP's. It has it's own personality, like a midrange bark to it. The more I play the more I can hear Angus Young without really trying. It's a lot of fun when it's cranked and it also sounds sweet for clean tones. I thought the neck pickup would sound like I was playing under a blanket but it's go a nice full warm sound. It's very versatile.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
It's black so it's hard to screw up. A little bit cheesy on the top of the head but you can't see unless it's standing up.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
After setting it up properly it played like a dream. I love the neck and the fretwork.

Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
Mine is very well made, it is a 2010 model SG Standard in Ebony and everything on it is absolutely exemplary. It is one purchase that I was hesitant about but have never regretted.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
Have had it for 2+ years now and I have to admit, I am still psychotic about taking care of it, always look for buckles/buttons before I play it and I wipe it down after I play it, everytime. Period. But the fit and finish are top quality, it's a real nitro finish, not the inexpensive poly that I was used to (yes, it is thin enough you can see the wood grains in it, so isn't shiny as glass like the cheaper ones, but that's a good thing). All of the controls still work A1+, everything is smooth and every control on it actually does something that you notice, no magic switches and knobs that you are left wondering what they do. The pickups are crisp, clear, and have the most "feel" of any pickups I have played. One thing I do with a lot of other guitars I have owned is first off replace the pickups into nicer ones. These, if I did that it would be a downgrade.
Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
I kind of liked the Gibson SG, to me, the Ebony is very elegant with the contrast of black and chrome with just a little bit of a mean streak. It's super light weight and weighs about the same as my Strat. The tones that you get out of this guitar make it the best all around guitar I have, you can really feel, as well as hear the attack but it's not noisy. It's very responsive and easy to get the nuances when playing. If you play harder, it's notably louder, and vice versa. Gibson has gotten a lot of bad rap in the past few years, they aren't what they used to be, etc. I can tell you, after 2+ years of owning this one, it is the best purchase I have ever made and I would do it over again. It's definitely a great guitar.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
The neck is just a little heavier than other guitars but I have gotten used to it to the point it is normal and other guitars feel "odd" to me now. It is set up just how I like it, very even string response, I use La Bella .009s and best handmade string imo. Very good all around playability.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
This is one of the most versatile guitars that I have ever played, it has that country sound and can go to full on metal chug, it's responsive enough for jazzy or even funk.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Very nice finish, I was expecting and judging this by the (less expensive) shiny paint, this is a real nitro finish (smells like vanilla for many years) and therefore you can still see the wood grain in it in places. This is actually a good thing and makes a much more rich and soulful sound.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
The action out of the box was really good, I took the guitar to my guitar tech and had it setup professionally with my strings and how I like them and even he complimented me on how well built the guitar was. I have let a few people play it and all compliment how well it plays, one obsessed that it was the "best" guitar that he has ever played in his life.

Very well made... It's a Gibson! Just got this dent and scratch... saved some money and all it had were two little scuffs that can easily be buffed out... Beautiful guitar!!! Excellent sound... Love the heritage cherry.

Only had a month but I know it will last like the other 4 or 5 Gibson guitars I've owned in the past.

Your general opinion of this product.
I bought this guitar because of the price. I wanted another Gibson before I couldn't afford another Gibson. I've had 3 Les Paul's and enjoyed them, however, I don't want another one. They are way too over priced and really heavy. This SG sounds every bit as good as a Les Paul... Seriously
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Feels great! Sounds great! Not heavy like a Les Paul. The neck is fun and fast to play. The controls are perfect and right at your fingertips.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
These pick-ups are my favorite Gibson pick-ups. Everyone talks about the 57's. There nice. But the 498t and 490r are my favorites. You can play anything you want on this guitar, and it sounds great. From hard heavy rock to jazz you can enjoy that haunting Gibson humbucker sound.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Gibson guitars are such a beautiful piece of furniture. I like to prop this SG on the sofa and walk out 10 feet or so and it has a sort of flamed or quilted look to it due to the heritage cherry and the wood grain. Love it!
Action
How was the action out of the box?
Action was good. String was a little heavier than I preferred but that is easily fixed. I'm going to have this guitar for a long long time. Love to play it, love to hear it.

Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
This guitar is PERFECT for a woman or man with smaller hands! It is very light weight and it's neck is thinner than the traditional necks of most other guitars I have picked up such as the Fender line of guitars.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
This thing sounds amazing, it has stellar tone and I would say it is bright and smooth, with mellow pickups. This review isn't going to give this guitar justice I can not tell you how impressed that I am with the overall guitar. Gorgeous, light weight, superior high quality, AMAAAAZING SOUND and ease of playing. I would say all of those make a guitar that is hard to beat!

Seems like a solid built guitar, and should last a life time with a little bit of care.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
It is built more solid then what some will have you belive. A very solid build in my opinion.
Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
This is a highly underrated Guitar in my opinion. While they advertise this guitar as having a 1950 type neck, do not confuse this with the Les Paul Studios 1950 baseball bat size neck. The SG actually has it's very own neck heritage and is not Baseball bat size at all. In fact it actually is a very comfortable and fast riffing neck in my opinion.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Fast playing neck. As I said before this is not a baseball bat size neck. It actually is similar to the Les Paul 1960 neck. But just the same, it is it's own distinctive neck size.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Good sounding to me.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Good the Neck was A+. But I question being able to see the wood grain structure thru the body finish on my Black SG standard. Maybe they are all like this? It is no big deal as the Guitar looks good. But the finish on the body is different from the finish on the neck.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
A little high for me out of the box. But a little bit of truss rod adjustment, and a lowering of the strings, and she became a good playing keeper for me.

Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
I would think so.I don't think that Gibson QC would let one go.After all, this is Gibson we are talking about.Name says it all.As owner of one,YES,I'll vouch for it.%100
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
It depends where you live.Weather, temparature has affects on wood.So better learn how adjust the trust rod,if not get a pro to do it.But don't get me wrong this axe is built to last.

This is a 2nd alternative to the SG custom that cost twice as much.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
I've played so many different brand of guitars in the past 35 years, Fender, Ibanez, Jackson, Washburn, PRS, Schecter, EVH, etc. Nothing felt more comfortable to play then my SG Standard. Then neck felt so contoured to hand that I did'nt realize that I was shredding at lightning speed. It felt that my SG was custom made for me and yet its one of a thousand out of the factory.I hit the jack pot.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
I like the warm sound when I am playing something slow and easy.Or that chunky sound for metal or that snappy bright sound texas blues.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
When I open the case for the first time.I can smell the fresh new paint, and wood grain. It smell like it just came out from the factory a minutes ago.color was beautiful the Heritage Cherry shine like it was buff like a custom Hot Rod in the car show.Let just say it talked to me...take me home baby...and plays all night long.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
When I went to my local retailer. I got mine, still in box stapled shot.Ligt weight, neck felt very comfortable to play,I got lucky this guitar was set up the way I wanted. It was perfect from the moment I pick it up.

All good except the finish

Generally a great product. Upon delivery, there were several dings and one place where the finish did not dry smooth. The item was shipped unopened once AMS got the package from Gibson. It appears that Gibson tried to hurry the product to market after re-opening from the flood and did not take the usual care.
