General
Your general opinion of this product.
At a time when money's still tight for a lot of us, it's great to know that good, solid instruments are available at a reasonable price. This Electromatic 12-string is a prime example. Fit, finish, and playability are all superb - the more so considering the $700 price tag. This axe will be used for my next CD as well as for live use.
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
Detailing is excellent, and the feel is solid. Bindings, fret markers, and frets are all well fit. I have to believe this instrument will wear extremely well over time.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
As an older pro player, my hands no longer easily fit the limited real estate of Rickenbacker necks. This neck is broader and flatter than a Rick neck. I've owned both 360 and 330 Ricks over the years, and this little Gretsch will provide that same sound for me with increased playability, at a third of the price.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Pickups are not 'hot' - meaning, very mellow, and not huge output. Swapping them for something a little stronger is probably the only additional 'tweak' I'd perform (down the road).
Action
How was the action out of the box?
The guitar went straight to my luthier buddy, who does all my work. So I can't speak to how it looked when it arrived. He's set up a number of guitars for me, and he knows exactly what I'm after. For this set up I asked him to see if he could flip the four octave pairs (E, A, D, G) so that the octave is below the root - like a Rick. He had no problem doing this, tho' he did, obviously, need to cut me a new nut to accommodate the new string positions, as well as turn the EADG bridge pair saddles around 180 degrees - all of which worked fine. Intonation is as good or better than any Rick I've owned.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
I ordered mine in Black, and it looks 'sweet'. No blemishes that I can detect. Very smooth, glossy finish. Metal work is all perfect.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
Too soon to tell. Just received it.
