General What is your overall opinion of this product? To put it simply, I couldn't be more pleased. It is even better than I had expected, one classy lady. It carries itself with elegance and beauty balanced with the ability to get down and dirty when need be. This is one gorgeous axe. Quality What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music? For the money, it is a class act. Well thought out, well built. As far as styles of music, see my later comments. Features Are the features on the product what you were expecting? What are your favorite features? Honestly, I bought this instrument unseen and unplayed, the nature of mail order. I trusted the consistency of high end Ibanez products and was not disappointed. The finish is near flawless and, as stated, it came out of the box with a setup that was near perfect. I have never been a fan of active electronics (I have been at this for 40+ years) but after playing this axe, I am hooked. Some mention has been made of two items, excess wire in the electronics compartment and the lack of a dedicated battery access box. When I opened up the panel (three screws with inset brass bushing, no problem with the stripping the wood over time) I found it to be well wired, very tidy. Access to the battery was no problem unless you consider the perfect fit of the cover. It takes a small point in the screw hole to pull it up but that just reflects the precision of manufacture. Feel Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing? The neck is what you expect out of an Ibanez, thin and fast, very easy to approach. There is no position that is uncomfortable including the highest notes. Excellent string spacing (for my hands at least, that is a personal matter of course). All controls are well laid out and easy to access. I like the detent at the middle of each tone adjustment (bass, mid, treble and pickup pan control) as it makes spatial orientation a breeze. Also dig the passive/active switch and the mid-cut switch for the extra flexibility. Tone How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin? The auditory aspects of this instrument are very malleable. I have found I can get most any sound out of it I want. My work ranges from jazz to world music to orchestral and studio so flexibility is the key, warm to brash. All I can say is this. I would be very surprised if you can't find the sound you need with this axe. Deep bottom to edgy crunch to funky slap, it is there. Finish How did the stain or paint job look? Smooth and even, nicely buffed oil finish. Beautiful grain in the flame maple top, fine finish overall. The back of the neck is satiny and has a great feel. Value Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range? This is a relatively inexpensive bass that compares favorably with boutique basses running at least twice the price if not more. It is not a Fodera or a Sadowsky but at one fifth the price or less, it is hard to justify the expenditure on those admittedly great basses. I'm happy to have the SR 1400 in my collection. Playability How was the action out of the box? It needed only minor intonation tweaking but that is standard maintenance. Actually, there was no string (comparing the 12th fret harmonic and the fretted 12th fret note) that was more than a few cents out and two were dead on, it was a minor fix. Same comparing the 17th fret harmonic. The neck was set perfect for my touch. It ships with .045 through .105 gauge strings. I prefer .040 through .100 so I made a simple truss rod and saddle tweak, just standard biz.

Quality Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable? Ibanez has very good quality control. That was evident in this bass. Features What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could? Lots of tone controls and nice hardware. That is one of the main differences between this bass and the bottom end of the SR line. General Your general opinion of this product. I asked around about good basses with thin necks because I have trouble stretching for notes. Ibanez SR, Fender Jazz, and the Rick's were most recommended. People kept telling me Ibanez is consistant in their quality. Very important when ordering a bass without testing. Tone Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin? Medium tone. Not too dark. Not too bright. Finish How did the stain or paint job look? My only complaint. The picture shows the bass having a light color top that really contrasts with the rest of the body. Mine is dark with an orange tint. Others have expressed the same issue. The main color of the top is darker than the outline of the bass in the picture.
Been waiting months for this bass!

Quality Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable? Very high quality. It had one small nick on the headstock, no big woop. String spacing is spot on. Features What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could? The active EQ bypass is a nice feature. Tone Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin? With flats, beautifully punchy! Exactly what I was hoping for. I have a 5 string BTB model that has that same awesome punch. No other bass I own has that same "hit you in the chest" pop. Finish How did the stain or paint job look? The finish is sharp. The maple top is stained to more of an orange tint. Not quite as natural as the stock photo. But hey, it still looks great.
