What a great drum!

It is a Ludwig..........'nuff said! A killer drum made by one of the most respected companies in the business. I believe it is made overseas, which may be the reason it is not a Black Beauty. But other than that, it is every bit as good.
The sound is more mellow than a steel shelled drum, as expected from the brass shell, but with a great bite and attack. Much more power than a wood shell drum.
This drum is a great value. It is much cheaper than a standard Black Beauty, but with the same shell type and, in my opinion, much cooler looks. If you are needing or wanting a metal shell drum, take a good look at this one. You will not be disappointed.

Absolutely Stoked

Overall it seems very well made.
I rented a Black Beauty snare from "The Drum Doctors" when recording an album at NRG Studios in North Hollywood. This Black Magic snare sounds just as good in my opinion. I switched out my snares to the 40 strand to get even more crack. There is a beautiful low end presence as well around this drum that when miked sounds so full (unmiked as well). I just played a gig with the new snare and my entire band and friends in the audience all commented on the new great snare.
Considering it's at least half the price of a Black Beauty, it's worth every penny. I agree with some of these other reviews that they could've given it a better throw off, but other than that, it's great.

I have had this drum a month no, I baught it here from AMS..Anyay, I have oned my share of snare drums, Black panthers, Tama, Pearl...etc..Never owned a Ludwig until I ordered this. I am simply blown away completely by the sound of this drum HUGE,I have 6-1/2 X 14 Model, Its got a tremendous crack, an ear splitting rim shot and an increadible amount of depth , once yopu tune it to its sweet spot and then lay into it you will have a grin from ear to ear as I di, its the sweetest sounding snare drum I have ever heard! Thats saying alot as I have heard many, however they made this, whatever they did with the shell, who knows?? Its an amazing drum and Im in love, its my main snare now! If you want to drive your band and let them know without doubt where the ONE is , then buy this amazing drum!
I think its worth ever penny, its built great, the rims are awesome diecast and the nickel plated brass is stunning in person, its a monster! and an an ey catcher! It snaps heads! more than once at a gig this past month I have had people ask me what the heck is that snare!! Anyway, use the easy payment plan, buy this drum and never look back, its versatile, extremely sensitive, very loud and can do it all..fantastic value!

Made well? Absolutely made well. My only complaint and it is a little one, is the throw-off is a bit cheap compared to the rest of the drum, but it functions like it should.
The tone on this snare drum is HUGE. Huge bottom end, beautiful crack, with a phat rim-shot, even my guitarist, instantly feel in love with it.
Excellent value. You simply can not go wrong with this snare, for ANY style of music. I play mewtal, classic rock, raggae, and blues, and this snare does them all beautifully.

Unbelievable Drum For the Money

It is very well made and it has put Ludwig back on the map for making quality snare drums!
After changing the heads to Evans EC2 Snare and putting Puresound snares on the drum (which is what I do for all of my snares) The 13" x 7" had a lot of body and character to the sound. It did not have echoing ring of a metal drum but it had the volume of a metal drum!
This is a quality PROFESSIONAL drum and the cost it worth the quality of the drum!
