Product Review I did some research and learned that ribbon mics were recommended for a nice rich warm vocal sound, which is what I was after in my next mic. I just received my MXL R144 last week and am definitely satisfied. I also have the MXL 990 cardioid mic, which I have been pleased with. So I ran a side by side comparison and noticed a huge difference. I recorded vocals on one track using the 990 and the same male voice singing on a second track using the 144. The R144 was so much more rich and warm. It was delightful. I would have had to run the 990 through processors, EQ and FX to get the same rich warm sound that came naturally with the 144. The 990 is a good mic, to be sure, but the R144 had such a full sound. One thing to note, my 990 cardioid mic requires phantom power. On my input I had it at volume 6. The 144 does not require phantom power (you've probably already read that you are not to use phantom power with this mic, as it will cause damage). I had to turn the input volume up to 10 to get the same level. No biggie, since that had no adverse affect on the over all sound. I definitely recommend this mic. You can't beat the price.

Product Review Just got the MXL R144 in from AMS and it FAR exceeded my expectations. This really is a good-sounding ribbon mic (especially for the price). It's not as dark as you would think and, with a touch of eq (which it takes quite well), sounds fantastic on voice overs -- very smooth, crystal clear, and no sibilance. It's better on vocals than the Fathead and is a worthy addition to anyone's mic collection. As with most passive ribbons, it needs a lot of gain...supplied by either a good preamp or something like the Fethead or Cloudlifter.

Product Review I bought this mic because I wanted to get my feet wet with ribbon mics. I own another MXL mic and while it has iit's uses, they are not a brand I would recomend. But this one immediately impressed me. My Behringer UCM1820 had no issues providing enough gain to get a nice crisp, warm sound. It definitely adds some color too. A little dark, but a good dark. I first tried it on some rock vocals. I re-recorded the vocal on a completed project and without tweaking any eq, just some slight compression it sat perfectly within the exsiting mix. Next I recorded my Egnater Tweaker 15 with it and an sm57 at the same time on seperate tracks and after working out placement, the results were excellent and it recorded less dark than the sm57 which was a shock to me. I cN see me using this more often, I really like the crisp dark sounds it's producing compared to my GAP FC1 mkII. I definitely would recommend this MXL product to anyone wanting to try a ribbon mic and not break the bank. It really changed my opinion on their products..I might have to give their tube mic offerings a shot..another high cost type of mic I really want to get for ky mic locker

Product Review I got this for recording blues style acoustic slide, hoping to emulate a very old sound. I was highly impressed with the quality for such a “cheap” mic. Nice package/case, shock mount and overall very impressive quality for the price.

Product Review This mic is very powerful and can be used in a variety of ways. It can be used for vocal as well as instruments. Please do not use Phantom power on this mic as it will destroy it. This mic by far meets all of my expectations. I've had it a little over a month now and its literally all I've used.

Product Review My introduction to mics started with this one! As any owner of other MXL mics, I wanted to see how this one would perform, given the price. I was very impressed! The warmth of this mic is surprisingly good! I'm almost scared to buy another ribbon mic, for fear of it not performing like this one! I really like this ribbon mic! If your budget is tight, but you want a quality ribbon mic, this is the one to get!

Product Review I bought a second one to use for overheads and now I have a pretty close matched pair. I run them through a couple of Presonus pro channels and also insert an La2a compressor on each through an X32 console. What a great vintage sound for a reasonable price.

Product Review The R144 works fine on my acoustic guitar and voice. I'm positive it will be just as good on my guitar amps. What keeps me from giving a full 5 stars is that the chrome looking bracket on the mesh grill is plastic (I think). But - the mic isn't purple, it's more of a dark bluish-purple, which is a relief, as purple looks cheap when it comes to microphones. For the price, you get a nice plastic box/case, a polishing cloth, the mic and a shock mount with extra bands. The R144 is larger than my AT2020 which is another bonus.

Product Review I'm a professional singer and have sung in front of U87's and 414's literally hundreds of times, and I own an NT1A for my home studio. This cheap ribbon mic is the best vocal sound for me ever. Responds very musically to EQ and compression. The track just laid in the mix and was always there without ever being overpowering. Big time sound, man! Can't wait to try it on acoustic gtr, piano and bass. Just buy one and try it out for yourself. I'm going to buy another for a Blumlein stereo rig!

Great equipment, you can use it for everything you want. I have a recording studio and i like to do all the sound live, this mic is excellent to record guitars and do a good job on percusions and Drums, for Voice is what i was looking for, you dont need no more, just a good computer with programs and a mic like this. Just run the XLR line and set up the equipment, the shock mount that comes with it is great and looks good. nice warm tone, it wont give you a cold sound.

Great Entry to Ribbon Mics

The feel, weight and look is industrial strength. The ribbon assembly is delicate and that's where there may be issues. There are noticeable differences in sound between units. Pattern is unique to ribbon mics. Much more consistent than the figure-8 setting on variable pattern condensers. Not for live sound, especially outdoors. Takes some care in handling and placement. I have had three and sent back the oddest sounding unit to have sort of a rough stereo pair. The odd unit was kind of midrangy and ringy. Both the "keepers" are warm, roll off smoothly in the treble but capture a "real" image that has a lot more clarity but less edge than most of my condensers. My ears like them even more than my wallet, which likes them a lot. Good for horns, guitar cabs, some vocals, drum OH.

Yes clear warm sound. I've used it now to record trumpets, french horns, and vocals. The Figure 8 pickup pattern makes mic placement more critical for close micing. Very clean and warm.
