A Excellent piece of equipment
Matt Petty from New Orleans, LA, USA
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
Very well made. Very shallow learning curve to operate it.
Features
What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could?
Very clean low noise levels. The inputs are chassis mounted, (hate when companies cut corners and just mount to PCB boards thus stressing solder points and tabs, ever run into breakages because of this folks?)
The shell program is going to be great when I get to use it with 828 and the Nuendo. Simple yet quality, simple, simple, simple to use. A monkey could operate this. No fuss.
Ease of Use
How easy is this product to use? How easy is the product to use with other products? Did it take long for you to learn to use this product? Was the manual helpful? How playable do you consider this product to be?
Plug and play Baby! I use The Neundo 96 Audiolink Multiset. I used this product to expand my amount of inputs and adding XLR connections with out adding more pre amps etc. . Did exactly what I wanted it to do. Can't wait to buy the 828mk3 and make that the master and have the others slave to it, to utilize the MOTU shell software to control everything.
Value
Was this item an overall good value?
Good solid value. I wouldn’t want it to be cheaper. There's no need to cut corners resulting poor quality or add bells and whistles.
On the “skill” are we talking about the skill to operate this, or my personal skills?
Appearance
Appearance
I couldn’t give a crap about appearance of any product, and any one worth their salt shouldn't or wouldn’t either. It’s all about function, and quality, not how pretty it is. LOL

Nice and affordable device, but outdated.

Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
These pre's are robust and really well designed, especially considering the price. The knobs, switches, and ins/outs are solid, and have caused me no problems in the 2 years I've owned this device.
Features
What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could?
The 8pre has every basic thing you could need to start a home recording project. It functions flawlessly, even while using all preamps @ 24-bit, 96k.
I would give this device 5 stars across the board, except MOTU has stopped making drivers for it. It does not cooperate with Win7 very well. That is my only gripe.
Ease of Use

It's a pretty basic audio interface. If you have a general idea of what you're doing, or aren't afraid of reading, you'll have no trouble. It can be tricky to make it work with Win7. Again, that's my only issue.
Value

Probably this interface's #1 strong suit: the price. You can drop $100 more and get a device that records at 192k, but really I don't see a point to that unless you're processing video along with audio.
Especially if you're running a Mac instead of PC, this device is not completely outdated, and is a great value.
Appearance
Appearance
It's slim and fits in a single rack. Given everything it does, including basic graphical feedback of each input, it's a nice little compact device.

Great Unit
Matt Shaffer from Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
This product for me has been flawless as well. The only problem I have had with it has been driver issues that are not the fault of Motu but rather the new firewire stack included with Win 7. However reverting to legacy windows drivers resolves all issues. This unit has been rock solid for probably 4 years now.
Features
What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could?
8 pre amps. It makes recording drums easy for me. The only thing that would be nice would be a couple of line level ins so you dont have pre amps coloring everything. But I think your then talking a different price range.

Understand what you are buying
Mark S. Lewis from Pasadena (Los Angeles County), California, USA
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
Ok, I had to write a review because of the previous reviewers comments. Mine has worked flawlessly and I bought one of the earlier units. It is built well for a single rack space unit (see my following comments)
Features
What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could?
It is small for what it is. Understand that it does have small controls/knobs for a reason, it fits in a single rack space and if the controls were larger it wouldn't be a single rack space unit.

I find it is reasonably easy to use, not perfect, but alright considering its intended purpose and size. It is easiest to control it using software, although its not perfect either it does work.
Value
Was this item an overall good value?
I think it is an excellent value for the features, converters and size. I has a very nice, clear sound and capable of 24Bit/96KHz recording.
