Decent... for the price

Product Rating Product Review Definitely not a great mic for guitar speakers, especially high gain, but decent, considering the price. It's fairly scooped in the mids, lacking low end, and has a bit too much fizzy high end. It's a lot better for clean tones because of this brightness. I don't know how people can stand to just hang it over the amp like that. I think it sounds terrible that close to the speaker. It's not a good mic to use as the only mic, but it does compliment other mics well. I'm pairing it with a Sterling Audio ST151 large diaphragm condenser. This gets the deep thumpy low end while the e609 fills in the high end and helps balance the mids, though even together it's still a fairly scooped sound (which works well to balance out the mid-heavy V30's I have these mics on). I have 2 each of the e609 and ST151 for a stereo pair of V30's. The e609 seems to have a slight phase variance from most other mics. When you mix them you can hear the phase is slightly off. But I use a phase aligner plugin because I mix several mics on a stereo w/d/w rig w/4 speakers. But no matter how I place the e609, the aligner always has to shift it about 30 samples to get it coherent with the other mics, which all end up within just a few samples of each other. So you can't really mix it with other mics without a plugin like this. Overall, it can be useful, but takes some work. I don't recommend it as an only mic unless you're just doing cleans with it. I do recommend it for pairing with other mics, but like I said, it takes a plugin to get it to play nice with other mics.

Product Review So easy to set up and use! Design really isolates the cab with virtually no bleed-through. I use it hanging with cable looped thru handle so there's no coupling to the floor via a stand, drummer can't trip on the stand or bump it so it's knocked off-axis. Very neutral and accurate, I prefer it to the Sm-57 in every way.

Product Review Got this to replace my SM-57 and boom stand to clear up more space on my floor in my home studio, while also hopefully increasing some of the mid range clarity and responsiveness for clean electric sounds out of my fender bassbreaker. Worked like a charm. Records really well through my UA Arrow -- loving the sounds I'm getting from all my guitars -- including a squire FSR tele, a Fender American pro tele deluxe, Gibson LP Junior, Gibson ES-275 Thinline, and PRS Silver Sky. Recommend. If you have a decent audio interface, I'd say get this over the e906 w. the built in EQ switching -- I think this will do the trick and save some money.

Best Guitar Amp Microphone

By: Steviebone      Submitted: 9/6/2019

Product Review This microphone is one of the best suited for handling guitar amps and other louder close mic applications, especially where a low profile is advantageous, such as on stage or in a cramped studio setting. The mike can be hung/slung over a speaker cabinet or mounted on small footprint stand and placed directly in front of speaker cone/grill. The flat design allows for setup in extremely tight spaces. The frequency response of 40-18k works well on most amplified instruments. It is designed optimally to handle high sound pressure levels (loud) without pads. Response is fairly flat and even across the entire range. It is also super-cardroid pattern meaning crosstalk can be kept to a minimum, important when mic'ing multiple cabs. I found these to be superior to the standard sm-57 type mics for guitar cabinet pickup, more bottom end, crisper high end and very low profile. They are also fairly durable. I've been using mine for a long time and they have held up well.

Product Review I now own 6 of these, and will never consider another mic for guitar. They accurately pick up the amp sound, usually with very little tweaking to the EQ. And their physical design allows you to hang them over the cab, eliminating the need for yet another mic stand to trip over. And, because of the larger diaphragm than some other instrument mics, these are suited well for toms and bass amps.

Sennheiser E609 - a must have mic for studio and stage

Product Review This is the 2nd E609 in my studio mic collection. Been using the first one for several years now. So useful for live work too. I use them to record small guitar amps, and also to mic the snare. It's easier to get a good isolated snare track than the old Shure 57 standard. While it's made for mic'ing a guitar amp I find it a really versatile mic for drums. Useful for bass guitar amp too but there are other mic's that specialize in covering those frequencies. The 609 is a serious value and affordable too. Never had any issues with performance or technical issues. If you play guitar live mic'd up or work in a studio it is a 'must have'.

Product Review I have finally run 2 mics for both amps. the sound is so much better, it really sounds more like how I hear it playing out. this mic is great. I use it with a shure sm57 on my vox ac15. it is a great complimentary sounding mic, this one has more highs and that is great cause the sm57 can be a little murky. I would recommend it for a standalone guitar amp mic, and REALLY recommend it for the 2nd mic on an amp, to get a nice full sound recording.

Product Review I've used sm57 on guitar amps and cans for years. We used to have a pro studio and it was always an sm57 or an md421 Sometimes both for low tuned metal stuff or for alt rock worship type guys the 57 always worked well. Now I'm just doing youtube demos and home recording and I have always wanted to try one of these. I ordered one over the summer and hooked it up and did some guitar tracks. Sounds different than an sm57 but a good different and I like how you can just hang it over the amp. you don't really need a stand just sling it over the top line it up with the speaker and your done. easy set up great sound and a great price anyone can afford. So get a 57 and one of these the 57 can be used for other things too. Vocals, Snare etc.

Product Review I use this mic to record my guitar amp simply by draping it over the top. My amp sits next to a very big Bonham type drum kit with a very Bonham like basher behind the kit. Very little drum signal shows up in the guitar track and this mic picks up exactly what is coming from the amp. Allows us to record live while allowing for overdubs if necessary.

Your general opinion of this product. love this mic. had numerous friends that use this for their set up so i picked up a couple. great warm tone. what i really love is that theyre so versitale! use it on congas, guitars, even vox sound atleast half way decent! haha quality is top notch. nothing wrong with any of these and 10 year warranty, cant beat it. these are rock solid. i deducted one star for one reason. if youre no newbie to sound, no problem. but if youre new, you will need to know there is one way and one way ONLY to place this on a guitar cab, and it has two faces. be prepaired for feedback. one side IS labled front, but i always think about the black grill "camoflage" with the cabs grill (usually black)... features, great ruggid design and versitale! can be used for many instruments! ---Placement! placement is a breeze with this mic beautiful tone. almost natural sounding. much preferred over the sm57. and a LOT easier to place.

Your general opinion of this product. I love this mic for mic'ing amps. The flat shape, allowing it to be simply draped over the amp and rest on the grill saves time and hassle of setting up a mic stand. Sennheiser's reputation speaks for itself. I've had no issues. The build is great, very solid and looks like it can handle the road. The microphone capsule design allows for placement in tight places like miking toms. I use it between two toms, a 10” and 12” and they sound awesome; big, full with the perfect attack. I used to use AKG D409 mini clip ons or Sennheiser e604 mics on each tom for live use and the Sennheiser e609 blows them away. The mic is easy to postion and its just plug and play. Very responsive when with the eq bands. The sound is awesome. It is a rich full sounding mic. I havn't triend on a guitar amp, but on toms I prefer it over my e604 and AKG D409 microphones.

SOUND:
This mic has a warm sound, not too bright but very clean and clear. From time to time I've even used one as an acoustic mic. It lends a 'full' sound rather than the thin sound of some condensers...of course different mics for different sounds so I'm not saying it's the definative acoustic mic but I like it, especially in front of the Deluxe Reverb cabinet.
