High Quality Portable Recording
Quality:
This recorder feels very solid, but the silver band around the machine is plastic which gives it a little less positive impression. I would have designed it with a non-slip surface in place of the silver plastic.
Features:
The screen is large and easy to understand. The size is roughly the same as an iPhone so it is easy to hold or put in your pocket. The ability to record directly to MP3 seems like a good idea with the understanding that in that format, any sounds above 15,000Hz will be eliminated.
Ease of Use:
Controls are very intuitive and buttons are large enough to easily see and use. Most buttons are backlit so if, for example, you are recording, the record button glows to remind you. The manual is easy to read, but could use a little more detail about some functions. A little trial and error goes a long way.
Sound:
The recordings I have made include directly from the internal mics and from a sound console. The mics seem very sensitive and low noise. The recordings made directly from the console are perfect with no extra noise and a crystal clear quality. I have only used the recorder in WAV format.
Reliability:
I have only had this recorder a few weeks, but I think it will hold up well. I do plan to get the case for it to make it less slippery to hold and to protect it against bumps.
Overall:
I am very pleased with this recorder and would recommend it to anyone looking for a device capable of long recording times (WAV 6+ hours out of box, 25+ hours with extra 16gb memory card) and excellent battery life and sound. I believe solid state recorders like this will totally eliminate old-fashioned recorders for both field and studio use.
