What is your overall opinion of this product?
Excellent synthesizer, wonderful true piano action. Plays better than some acoustic pianos. And ya never need to tune it! :) I believe its the best 88 key synth out there. That's why I bought it.
What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music?
Top-notch quality. Its a Yamaha. This will work for ANY genre of music.
Ease of Use
How user friendly is it? Would it work well for a beginner, intermediate or experienced player?
While its a bit heavy at about 50lbs, its got a metal casing.I expect it to be durable. This is my main keyboard so it goes to every rehearsal and gig. Its a lot of synth for a beginner, though the action is the best so on that alone I'd recommend it for a beginner. However, if you are just learning to play piano, get something else. A couple of grand plus is probably too much to simply learn on.
Are the features on the product what you were expecting? What are your favorite features?
The only suggestion I have for Yamaha is to make a foot controller to switch btwn the arps. Then it would really have its own built-in drummer/bassist! Plenty of room to save edited voices, layers, splits and manipulate the settings. It has two expression pedal jacks and you can change controller settings to use separate exp pedal on voices. Example is piano always on, horns controlled with Exp #1, strings controlled with Exp #2, lets you bring them in and out as needed, though ya gotta get in there and tweak the exp pedal settings. 1000s of voices. The onboard memory stick slot is great for quick recording and mic/2d instrument input is nice too.
How is the sound quality? How does the sound compare to other products you've use?
The S6 samples are GREAT! All of the samples are first class. GET THE BEST SPEAKERS YOU CAN! You can hear the subtle differences bwtn the S6 samples (Intimate, Woody, Rock, Bright, Natural) Its amazing. If you want THAT piano sound for a song, this has it. Same with the other instruments (EP, Tonewheel Clav, etc). The non-keyboard instrument samples sound great too. Guitar, bass, strings, horns, you name it and the S90 delivers.
How is the feel of the keys? Are the controls laid out well?
For piano, I couldn't ask for more. Straight up organ/synth players may prefer semi-weighted or non-weighted action instead. I am used to the piano feel and I prefer it so its a non-issue for me. If thats an issue, connect a controller for organ or syth.
Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range?
Its a bit of cash but worth it. This is a professional 88 key synth that should last for many decades when taken care of. Yes, its on the level of buying a top-of-the-line guitar or bass.
This keyboard is just awesome in every way.
