Product Description

The JP160, based on the Ernie Ball Music Man JP16, is a combination of the original Music Man John Petrucci JP6 signature model and later BFR Ball Family Reserve models.

JP160 features a gorgeous Roasted Maple neck. The Roasted Maple neck undergoes a very specialized kiln drying process which involves heating the wood to a specific temperature, or Roasting it, as the name implies. This removes excess moisture from the wood, which makes it stronger, more stable, lighter in weight, and, less susceptible to humidity changes. It also gives the player one of the most amazing feels in a neck. Topping the Roasted Maple neck is a 16 inch radius, 24 fret Rosewood fretboard Shield style inlays adorn the neck, as well as John’s signature JP Shield logo, which is inlaid at the first fret.

Ergonomically arranged in-line controls include a 3 position pickup selector, Volume, and Tone VR controls. Additionally, JP160 features an Active push-push 12dB circuit boost on the Volume control, allowing the player ultimate soloing power at their fingertips. This Active Circuit is powered by a 9V battery that loads into an easily accessed compartment on the rear of the instrument, and requires no tools, making battery changes user friendly and quick.

Accurate intonation, smooth operation and excellent tuning stability come courtesy of the combination of the newly designed Sterling by Music Man Double-Locking Low Profile Tremolo. Fans of John’s playing who have been preferential to a Double Locking Tremolo will find JP160 to be the answer to years of requests! This premium, full floating tremolo system is only available on the JP160 John Petrucci Signature Series instruments, and allows for full dives, 2 step pulls, and is exceptionally responsive to flutter effects, all while maintaining accurate tuning. Tuning machines are arranged in the classic Music Man 4+2 manner on the headstock. Johns’ signature is also proudly featured on the face of the headstock.

At first glance, this is a guitar that holds so much promise, looks, feel and of course JP's signature, unfortunately after ordering and receiving (less than 20 hours later!) I was shocked to find the truss rod was making a terrible pop with every string bend, in addition the pickups were wired wrong and somehow were active in all selector positions...fail. I exchanged it for the same model (which was fast and easy and again, the push-push volume boost knob stayed in the boost position, the guitar would not stay in tune, had a broken string on arrival and it went back too. I can say the 2nd jp160 i recieved had a creamy tone and felt incredible, the roasted neck is probably one of the nicest feeling necks out there, really wish the first one was perfect but thats the way she goes. Maybe it was a bad batch? Quality control really missed both of those, I know they are supposedly set up in california after coming from indonesia but who knows. Would I buy a sterling again? Maybe, just not the jp160, hopefully if you do, you will have better luck and if not at least AMS kicks ass at making things right.

It’s ok

Product Review

The guitar is ok. It’s a bit buzzy and the pickups are grainy sounding.

One of the best Super Strat/Strat guitars available with our without the hero worship

Product Review

I've owned the Sterling Music Man JP 100 koa, jp 150, and now the jp 160. You must be thinking wow this guy must really love John Petrucci. Meh i respect his playing but I'm not a dream theater fan in the least. BUT i do adore his signature guitars because there's really not much out there that plays better than them. Nothing beats a musicman neck. Whether Ernie ball or Sterling version both have the most comfortable and fastest neck's on the planet. Quality wise i rate these every bit on par with any ibanez prestige that I've ever owned. Very solid and ultra functional guitars that are gorgeous and ultra playable. These play almost just as good as their way more expensive counterparts. I say almost but the difference is very very minimal. These actually play better than my higher end guitars that i currently own or have owned. four the money these just cannot be beat. Get one and love it

Product Review

Out of the box hands down the worst guitar i have ever had my hands on! Bridge pulled all the way back so the strings were touching the frets, a chip in the paint by the tremolo, the switch was so loose one touch and it fell into the body, the frets were real gritty feeling and the tremolo would not return to pitch when used. Ive been playing for 30 years snd can fix all of these issues but it should never have been sent this way. Now after a fret polish, switch swap and a little filing to the knife edges of the bridge, string change it is one of the best guitars i have. Pickups and OFR next. AMS tech support was helpfull.
