The Electro Voice EKX powered loudspeaker line makes some noise!
Backed by a rich history that includes almost a century of pro audio design, Electro Voice’s audio expertise shines brightly with the new EKX Series. Priced just below the heralded ETX series, EKX offers a significant step up from the crowded two-way powered loudspeaker scene. A host of professional features combine with uncompromised performance and striking aesthetics to bring you everything you’ve come to expect from EV’s obsessively engineered products.
The Impressive EKX-15P!
Boasting a walloping 1500 watts of Class-D power, this powerhouse loudspeaker packs quite a punch and delivers stunning performance in a variety of applications. The EKX-15P takes advantage of EV’s patented Signal Synchronized Transducer (SST) waveguide for enhanced pattern control. The benefits cascade thanks to the waveguide (or horn) being enlarged and moved forward in the enclosure, (for time alignment with the speaker) while freeing up space for the port nestled under the horn for increased bass response – all the way down to 48 Hz. The EKX-15P enclosure is constructed of lightweight, compact, and durable 15 mm plywood, providing a warm sound, consistent resonance, and strong projection. The powdercoated grill is fabricated from 18 AWG steel to securely shield the cabinet’s contents while the durable EV coat, EV’s rubber polymer-based coating finish, protects the rest.
Under The Hood
The EKX-15P pairs EV’s own designed and engineered transducers alongside the heavy-duty EVS-15M 15” speaker with their DH-1M 1” titanium compression driver (known for its crisp, detailed highs) for a wide-range frequency response of 48 Hz - 20 kHz. Powered by a 1500 W Class-D power amplifier, the EKX-15P cranks out up to 134 dB peak SPL while the multiple onboard sensors control the handy variable-speed fan through Intelligent Thermal Management, keeping the temperature in check.
The Elegant Back Panel
The first thing you’ll notice is the brightly lit LCD display, allowing access to a variety of features via the single knob rotary encoder. This uncluttered design is both functional and simple to use. Stepping through the menu you’ll find QuickSmartDSP options to optimize the speaker for various uses, including tripod, wall-mounted, flown, or on the floor as a wedge monitor. You can also tailor the EQ curve to the type of program being amplified - such as Music, Live, Speech and Club. The EQ settings (especially useful when using the speaker without a mixer) include cut/boost controls for bass, middle, and treble in addition to an adjustable high-pass filter. This is perfect when pairing the EKX-15P with a subwoofer like the Electro Voice EKX-15SP and EKX-18SP. There’s a balanced XLR/TRS Combo Jack for each of the two channels alongside their respective mic/line trim control as well as a stereo RCA input for convenience.
It’s the Little Things
Detailed professional touches really make the EKX-15P stand a cut above its competitors. One example would be the loudspeaker’s eight distinct M10 threaded mounting points - true essentials for flying and permanent installs. The threaded mounts offer much-improved stability over the standard 35mm ‘drop-in’ sockets or all-metal handles.
