Johnny Marr
Marr is best known, of course, as the strikingly dynamic and influential anti-hero guitarist-arranger-all-around-musical-wunderkind behind Manchester quartet the Smiths, which virtually redefined and ruled U.K. pop throughout the 1980s. A master of melody, layering and texture, Marr has always brought his own instantly identifiable ringing, jangling genius to the proceedings, as he has done in post-Smiths stints with The The, Electronic, the Pretenders and Johnny Marr and the Healers, and right up to the present with Modest Mouse, the Cribs and innumerable guest appearances.

Primarily, I was attracted to the Jag by the way it sounded – this big, clear, ringing sound. My first proper experience playing one was with Modest Mouse in 2005. I had this riff kicking around that ended up becoming the song ‘Dashboard’, and it went from there really. The Jag suited the way I'd evolved as a guitar player, but at the same time my old stuff sounded absolutely right on it. It sounds like I’m supposed to sound.’ - Johnny Marr.

Aesthetically, I think the Jag is beautiful. I love the body shape and chrome; the early '60s idea of space-age design. When Fender approached me to make my own signature Jaguar, I wanted to iron out some of the flaws that I felt the guitar had, and spent months on the road going through as many as fifteen old Jags working out what I liked and didn’t like about each one. I wanted to prove the naysayers wrong about the Jag and my world became the guitar and the length of my guitar lead!

Switching and Pickups
I love the chrome panels on the Jag and didn’t want to change those as I felt they were a crucial part of the design. I did want to simplify the guitar's switching system, as I always found that over-complicated and soon figured out why players often covered the switches with duct tape so they wouldn't turn the guitar off by accident!’ - Johnny Marr.

I replaced the original three switch design with a single four-way Telecaster style switchblade. The first three positions are standard, bridge, both on and neck pickup selections, but when pushed forward into the fourth position it puts the two pickups in series where they act as one big humbucker, giving a darker, thicker sound that you don’t normally hear on a Jaguar. To give that circuit more possibilities I added a filter switch to the top panel that gives it more high end. By contrast, I always liked the high-pass filter switch from the original Jag design and repositioned it on the upper control panel where the 'jazz circuit' switch is normally found. It was another way of keeping things simpler.

We also lowered the height of these switches so they are less likely to be activated by accident. The pickups on my Jag are copied from vintage '62 pickups – I experimented with a lot of different setups but decided to change things from the original Jag design and had the pickups wound so that the polarity is the same on both instead of opposed. This definitely gives the pickups a more focused sound. We went through tons of different magnets and pickup wire to get the balance between the two just right.’ - Johnny Marr.

Johnny marr Is one of the most influential guitarist of all time. This guitar is amazing the minute I picked it up I could tell the attention to detail put into this guitar by Johnny Marr and Fender. The modifications to this particular Jaguar are Well thought out and very Useful. I’m very glad I own one now.

Great guitar!

Product Review

Awesome, ready to go right out of the box! The guitar is comfortable and sounds amazing through both my Marshall and Vox AC30. Bought mainly because I'm a huge Johnny Marr fan, but this is one of the best signature guitars I've ever played.

Great quality. No issues whatsoever with the guitar. The case doesn't close all the way on one side. A minor detail, but it still bugs me. May be just a flaw on my particular case.

Very comfortable weight, and the neck is smooth. I may lower the action a bit, but just my personal taste.

Killer tone options. I love the pickups. I haven't played it live yet, but in rehearsals it cuts through nicely.

I love the Olympic white. My favorite Fender finish.

A little more than I was comfortable spending on a guitar, but no regrets. I love it.

Ready to rock right out of the box. Was almost in perfect tune.

A new direction for me

Mine seems very well made. Quality tuners, custom pickups, and flawless finish. The neck is tinted nicely and finished well. I think the nut could have been finished/sanded a bit to help slight tuning issues, but that's standard setup stuff.

It's new, but will last

Your general opinion of this product.

I've never had or played a jag. I play an American strat and a custom Fano with p90s, so this is truly new territory to me. I wanted something different with pristine cleans...some jangle...and subtlety. That's exactly what this is. It took a big adjustment in my playing, as you will not be happy playing this for riff rock or blues... However, as I got to know it, I've really grown to love it.

It's light and the body is incredibly comfortable. The strat front body contour johnny marr gave it makes a nice difference. The smaller scale was new to me, and grew on me quickly. The trem is awesome, and I love how the arm stays where you place it.

This is pretty bright. When you have the choke switches engaged, there is a bit of a volume cut, and little low end. The series "humbucker" position is not a hot humbucker tone. That said, as I mentioned, as I get to know this guitar, I really like it. The tones are new to me, which is awesome. You can get jangly high cleans, warmer fuller tones where 6 string chords sound beautiful. This guitar loves reverb and modulation effects because it is so clear. It has inspired my playing in new ways. Trem sounds great.

Gorgeous. I have the KO. beautiful.

Pretty good. Guitars from factories always benefit from a pro setup.

Impressive Jaguar.

The high-water mark for my non-Custom Shop Fender guitars is my old Eric Clapton Strat. That Strat IS the best guitar I've ever played. It works for ME in all the right ways. I judge every guitar I play/purchase/own against that Strat. I pre-ordered the Johnny Marr Jaguar for two reasons; 1) I love The Smiths and, 2) I was curious about the Jaguar and the tone it could bring. At the sale price of $1,649, I took the shot. I assumed at that high, non-custom shop price this guitar would be incredibly well built with amazing fit and finish. I was right. This guitar is a very high quality instrument.

Just arrived last week...Therefore I really can't say.

Your general opinion of this product.

This guitar is very collectable and very playable. You CAN get Strat tones and all sorts of surf tones. Remember, this one has the big position #4 humbucker setting too. Big clean tone if you want it...Massive dirt if you need it.

Unique neck. Not a Fender U, C, or V. Not too big. Kinda flat on the back. Not too small. Feels nice compared to the soft-V Clapton Strat I spoke of above. Nice width, fine frets.

Strat tones which I love! Surf tones. Fatter humbucker tone in the #4 switch position. Lots of tonal opportunity here...I've only just begun to explore. (Using Hayseed 30 and VOX AC-30 in stereo).

It looks and feels like a Fender Custom Shop guitar. I got the white one.

Out of the box the action was perfect for me. The guitar was only slightly out of tune!

Well Worth the Wait

This guitar is beautifully executed in every detail. Finish, fit, sound, action. Its everything Johnny describes.

Just got it - it did survive a Fedex trip from the East Coast to the West Coast - without a scrtch. This guitar is rock solid - I do not aniticipate any problems.

Your general opinion of this product.

I've waited for some time for the release of this model. I am a big Marr fan and the detail he put into this guitar did not dissapoint in any way. It is perfect and a beautiful jag.

What drew me to this Jag - is Johnny took all the things I dislked about a Jag as well and fixed it. The neck is not too chunky and not too thin - the pickups are supreme. The bridge and tremelo fix are heavenly.

The pickups are a great surprise - just a little hot and with the wiring you can achieve dark to bright. It has so many different tones I am still trying to find my favorite.

I purchased the Orange metallic - and this is a beautiful finish. I had a shipped to the office and when it arrived and I opened the case players and nonplayers all commented on how beautiful it was. Its just eye popping.

The action out of the box was great. I have not had to tweak a thing. No buzz, no dead spots - and nicely setup.
