Product Description

The SG is a sleek, powerful, contemporary solidbody electric guitar. The distinctive double-cutaway guitar—now simply known as the SG—has become a major rock and blues icon. The SG Standard embodies all the tone, feel, and look of the original rendition of this legendary guitar, with features such as a slim ’60s profile neck with a smaller early ’60s headstock, the original early ’60s pickguard, Versatile 490R and 498T humbuckers, and Gibson’s innovative hardware, all wrapped into a design that remains one of the most versatile guitars available today.

Like the greatest SGs ever made, the SG Standard starts with a foundation of solid mahogany, a tonewood with a long tradition at Gibson. A solid mahogany body is crafted in the distinctive, thin asymmetrical dual-cutaway style, with iconic pointed “horns” and beveled edges to enhance playing comfort. A solid quarter-sawn mahogany neck is glued into the body in Gibson’s time-tested tradition, and carved to a fast, slim ’60s profile that measures .800” at the 1st fret and .875” at the 12th. It is topped with a bound fingerboard made from genuine rosewood with 22 medium-jumbo frets, and traditional trapezoid inlays. The smaller vintage-style headstock has the classic mother-of-pearl Gibson logo and holly inlays.

The SG Standard takes its firepower from the versatile 490R and 498T humbuckers. These great pickups have a characteristic blend of warmth and creaminess that made this guitar rock. The traditional wiring complement of an independent volume and tone control per pickup plus a three-way toggle selector switch allows a broad range of sonic variations. To anchor it all down, Gibson USA loads in a Tune-o-Matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece, with a set of genuine Grover tuners, a hardware set that partners up for solid sustain and precision tuning. Put it all together, and the SG Standard presents a great incarnation of the iconic original, bringing the look, feel, and sound to the hands of players of today.

Each guitar comes protected in a gig bag, owner’s manual and truss-rod wrench, and comes covered by Gibson USA’s Limited Lifetime Warranty and 24/7/365 Customer Service.

What is your opinion of this product?
It's been a couple years since my last electric guitar (I'm mostly an acoustic guy)... I've had a "copy" of a Gibson and thought "what's the big deal?" NOW I know! Sound is crisp and clear - the sustain is endless... just quality, quality, quality!

Check your Neck
What is your opinion of this product?
Beautiful axe w/ a bad neck joint set. Gibson dropped the ball and AMS tried to pass the buck w setup.(if they do in fact set up in store, or just ship from wear house, idk?) Was super excited to receive. That was until I pulled it out of the box. Delux gigbag is "meh". Gibson cheaped out on the case, in order to bring it in @ $1199 price point. Looks like the 2017's are $100 more & come w a hs case...but they have an aluminum tail piece so they shaved a few $$ there I'm sure. Any way, back to the purchase. From the profile, it looks like a black candy cane in the gig bag. Out of bag, tailpiece on a 45 degree angle from the low E to the high E. Good for Ant Man to grind his skateboard on, but that's about it. Plays ok, actions a bit high for my taste..G string requires tuning every time you pick it up. Prob due to neck joint set and/or tailpiece height? Advised AMS of the issue, we will see how they do. Was going to give away at a holiday charity auction, now prob just going to return.

Welcome back Gibson!
What is your opinion of this product?
Wanted an SG in 2015 but I hated what Gibson had done with their lineup. Then when the 2016 line was annoucned and I realized they cut back on the nonsense and were now offering their guitars again the way they were intended, I was fairly interested again. So I took the plunge and ordered a SG Standard T. This thing played like butter out of the box! Kudos to AMS on the wonderful packaging and safe shipping to me. But this guitar is tremendous. Pickups sound great, neck is amazing, welcome back Gibson. You're back to making great guitars once again!

I love this guitar
What is your opinion of this product?
Gibson can really make a great guitar. My SG in cherry is a beauty. Out of the box it was awesome. Low action, pickup height perfect and fingerboard straight and well finished. It has the creamiest sound to it. It cuts thru the mix with a beautiful tone and is perfectly balanced on the strap. Get it on an AMS payment plan. You will not regret it.

Far exceeded my expectations!
What is your opinion of this product?
I'm one of those people that does too much research on a product before dropping the kind of cash a Gibson requires, but I can say with 100% confidence that everything I have read about the 2016 Traditional models is spot on. Gibson went back to what made them so incredible in the first place and this guitar did not disappoint one bit. Yes, it isn't flawless in every facet of its' construction, but the way I look at it, no instrument is perfect. It's a mass produced instrument, there are likely going to be some small file marks on the fretboard, slight finish imperfections or other incredibly minor things, but they don't and shouldn't impact you as a player. From the strum of the first chord, I've been speechless by this guitar. Plugged in, playing it on the couch unplugged, it is just absolutely incredible! Gibson has far exceeded my expectations on this one! This was my second big AMS purchase and I will be purchasing many more in the near future.

Rock Machine. Stiffed on a Case.
What is your opinion of this product?
I own a 2010 SG Classic. I Have been missing out on humbuckers. I bought this utilizing 12 payments. No one else does financing like this. Great. The guitar is flawless. A return to form. Aside from a file mark on the binding, I can not find a flaw. Setup with 46-9 strings. I will need to setup to my liking later. But out of the box things are decent. The poloroid type picture of your actual guitar on the setup/QC bench is a nice touch. Complaints: No Hard Case - I know losing this in favor of a gig bag brought the cost back into reality. But this is a gibson sg standard. I need a hard case to protect it. 490r/498t - I know it's a return to form after the 2015 bloated showing. I know an SG is a rock machine. These are similar to a duncan pearly gates/custom 5. Only they have more mids and cut well in a band situation. They are just too modern sounding. With the quick connect solderless pcb wiring, I will likely swap these out for BBpros. Maybe have them rewound. Praises: 500k Pots all around. After years of swapping out the 300k pots Gibson has been putting in for volume pots since the 70's...Gibson have added in a solderless quick connect pcb with all 500 pots. I'm not in love with the tapers. The clarity in there. Unique Neck Profile - sort of a 60's slim taper and 59' hybrid. .825-.975. Starts out like a slim taper and moves into some heft you can dig into. Very similar to my MIM robery cray stratocaster neck. PERFECT! Graphite infused nut - What a difference. No binding. Tuning is rapid and smooth. Even big bends are more effective.

Great Guitar
What is your opinion of this product?
I never played a Gibson SG but since the price was quite fair for a standard SG I took the plunge and ordered mine in ebony. The finish is superb and I can't believe how light this guitar is. The neck is fast and a dream to play. The only thing getting used to is the SG wants to neck dive so you have to learn to adapt to the guitar. The only thing I don't like is that Gibson should include a hard case especially forking out money for a standard. I ended up buying a case for my SG so that was an extra $200. Gibson should include a hard case with a standard, Fender does but guess Henry is greedy which is why I buy more Fenders than Gibson because I get better quality control, fair prices, and more product for my money. Fender is about their customers while Gibson is not which is evident over the past several years.

Why No Hardshell Case?
What is your opinion of this product?
Shipping (and any other travel) is gonna take its toll on these guitars if they ship with only a gig-bag. Come ON, Gibson.
