The powerful, expressive tone of the Gibson SG Standard 2018 will instantly evoke memories of the most iconic Blues, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal guitarists and their groundbreaking, yet enduring riffs. Driven by a pair of humbuckers that are faithful recreations of the popular late-era PAF pickups, the Gibson SG Standard 2018 captures the essence of the original 1961 SG by accurately reproducing the sonic characteristics that made this model a legend.
Introduced by Gibson in 1961, the SG was originally intended to replace the Les Paul model, which was actually discontinued due to poor sales. In fact, the SG initially bore the Les Paul title — a development that Les himself was decidedly unhappy with. So much so that he requested his name be removed from the new model; and Gibson respectfully complied, re-branding his former namesake SG for “Solid Guitar”.
Despite Les’s misgivings, the SG enjoyed strong sales due to its lower price, dual cutaways allowing access to the 22nd fret, ultra-fast neck, lower weight, and its unique upper-midrange bite. George Harrison became an advocate of the SG in 1966, followed soon after by Pete Townsend, Robby Krieger, and Eric Clapton, who famously honed his glorious “Woman Tone” with an SG. However, the most loyal devotees of the SG may be Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath and Angus Young of AC/DC, who have rarely — if ever — been photographed playing any other brand or model of guitar.
Improvements for 2018
While the Gibson SG Standard looks, feels and sounds just like a ’61 SG, modern improvements include locking “kidney” tuners and chrome-plated aluminum bridge and stop tailpiece. You’ll undoubtedly appreciate the increased tuning stability and decreased weight afforded by these respective upgrades.
The 2018 SG Standard's solid mahogany body is finished with a beautiful nitrocellulose lacquer and features dual cutaways that provide easy access to all 22 frets on its slim-taper neck. The neck itself sports a solid rosewood fingerboard with “fret rollover” white fingerboard binding and trapezoidal acrylic inlays. In addition to the PAF 61R Neck and 61T Bridge pickups, the electronics section is rounded out by a 3-position Pickup Selector switch and 2 Volume and 2 Tone controls capped with black “Top Hat” knobs.
Gibson has also thoughtfully included a hardshell case to protect your investment for years to come.
