1961 was a year of groundbreaking new ideas and fresh designs over at Gibson. The legendary Ted McCarty, Gibson’s president at the time, had himself originally designed the SG to replace the Les Paul, which really does seem unthinkable in hindsight. It was eventually decided that the two models should coexist side-by-side going forward – and well . . . we should be eternally grateful for that decision and its impact on the music we know today!!!
The double-cutaway Gibson SG, known as the “solid guitar,” turns heads, fills ears with incredible tones, and captures the imagination. Stability, balance, and blistering speed are the hallmarks of this instrument – these are the reasons so many of history’s most influential guitarists have made the SG their instrument of choice. The Gibson SG is adaptable and is fully equipped to handle rock, blues, metal, pop, jazz, and a number of other musical stylings.

The Gibson 2019 ’61 SG Standard with is fitted with two distinct, hard-working humbuckers - the Burstbucker 61R neck pickup and Burstbucker 61T bridge pickup. These Burstbucker family members, often referenced as ‘1961 Humbuckers’, are all about offset coil construction. It means that one of the two humbucker coils contains more windings than the other. This draws the sound oh-so-slightly toward the realm of the single-coil pickup, a bit more presence and drive. These Burstbucker ‘61s also incorporate the highly-adaptable Alnico 5 magnets into their design, which themselves are naturally higher output and a bit more touch-sensitive than the more commonplace Alnico 2s. The four ‘Push-Pull’ knobs (two volume, two tone) allow you to switch up the combinations between the neck and bridge pickups and you’ll be treated to a vast collection of tasty humbucking tones!
