Excellent Guitar!
Product Rating
With the double locking Floyd Rose, and the neck-thru construction this guitar is sleek looking but built like a tank as well! Pick it up, beat it up, and TRY to knock this thing out of tune, good luck with it! I've used a soloist for over 10 years semi-professionally and have yet to break a string on stage. Can't say that for the other brands I've used over the years.
I have one of these that's over 10 years old and has seen plenty of action but she still plays just as good as she did the first day I used her. The finish has held up, the frets have held up with very minor wear, the pickups and knobs and switches have held up... like I said this thing's a tank!
Your general opinion of this product.
This guitar is the one to buy. You can save a few bucks and get something cheaper but you may end up having to tune or replace strings during a set, with this baby you won't. I can keep strings on this thing for months playing every weekend and never have to tune it besides a fine tune here and there... and yes I wear out the Flyd Rose and everything holds EVERY TIME!
The body has a little weight to it but it's neck-thru construction and solid as a rock so it's going to. The ease of fingering on the fretboard makes this thing super fast and smooth to play, and all the controls are just a finger flip away from your picking position.
These pickups are HOT, great for rock but suitable for other genres as well.
The finish is always quality on a soloist SL1 and will hold up for years with minimal care.
For me there's only one word to describe the action on a soloist... PERFECT! It will just about play itself saving you some fatigue on those long gigs.

SL1 in Black
Quality is top-notch. Everything is nice and tight. Bindings are all the same thickness, no dings or flaws (with the exception of the ones I've put in it during playing). Dependability is way up. You can hammer on the Floyd for ages without a worry about breaking a string. Tuning stability is rock solid, with only the occasional fine tune. So long as the strings weren't old and crusty, I wouldn't hesitate to gig without a backup with this guy if I had to.
It's mostly a solid hunk of wood with a few metal parts attached to it. I've previously owned a RR1, bought new around 97 or so, and it held up perfectly. The build quality is the same on this Soloist, so I imagine it'll handle whatever I can throw at it. Do take care to mind the headstock, the pointy bit has a way of banging into just about everything.
Your general opinion of this product.
Overall, the guitar is fantastic. Everything's put together well, the electronics work well, all the hardware is attached properly.
Playability is right on, after a quick setup. The neck is super-fast, as you'd expect from a compound radius board. Despite being labeled at marketed at fretboard melting metalheads and the speed demons extraordinaire, it lends itself to fast chord work as well. Bends and slides are super silky, and the thing sustains forever. The only minor downside is the location of the controls, they can get in the way if you don't watch where your hand is.
The bridge pickup is pretty much exactly what you'd expect from a model that was made famous during the heyday of the hair band. The bigger surprise is in the versatility offered in the two stacked humbuckers in the neck and middle positions. They offer an amazing variety of tones, from thin and tinny, to thick and meaty.
Why do I keep buying black guitars? I have to remember that when I pick up my next instrument. The finish itself is nice and thick, and beautifully polished. Everything reeks of substance and class. That being said, don't order it in black if you're obsessive about keeping things clean, you'll eventually go insane trying to remove fingerprints and smears.
Out of the box, the action was fairly well set, a little high towards the end of the fretboard. I'm more used to a fairly flat action all the way down the neck, so I set it as such. Intonation was dead on for the out of the box action, and only needed minimal adjustment when I lowered it a bit.

Best I Ever Had
I can't say enough about the quality of this incredible axe. Not one single flaw in the finish, fretwork, or anything. It makes me want to baby it so it looks like this forever! The people saying this is ten times the axe of the Professional model aren't kidding!
I gave it five stars here just because an instrument of this quality, well cared for, will last a lifetime. Jackson seems to think so too, they put a lifetime warranty on everything but the electronics! Now, the Floyd is here a double-edged sword. Unlike its clones, the Floyd does not eat strings left and right. Two weeks in, I'm still on the stock 9-42s that came with, and I've tried out every old 80s wang trick I could remember or dream up! But, just looking at it I can tell it would be a royal pain to change the strings when one finally does break. Playing a gig without a backup axe would be kind of like playing Russian Roulette, but with say 24 cylinders instead of six.
Your general opinion of this product.
This is quite simply the best guitar I ever had. I thought you needed to go through a custom shop to be this happy with an instrument! Quality just shimmers every place you look, from the fit and finish to the materials used, and especially the neck which feels like God gave Grover Jackson the specs on a tablet of stone! Now, I was kind of surprised that an instrument of this quality would come with a universal case rather than a fitted one, but it looks like it was made by SKB, super high quality, and it holds my baby snug as a bug, so I'll live with the extra cavities around the headstock and lower horn. And this is really my only quibble!
The action is fast, the neck and fingerboard are simply the best I've ever had, and I've had both USA Gibsons and Fenders. The original Floyd Rose is a delight-two weeks and still no broken strings, and I've only had to fine-tune it twice. That bridge just doesn't care what you do to it! Whack it to make your notes warble, dive bomb to the deck, yet it's easy as a Fender to add a sweet shimmer to a chord. Fantastic. It only has a volume and a tone, but they are well located and high quality pots. It doesn't take much spinning at all to notice a difference with either.
The stock Seymour Duncans are great for rock players and for people who need one guitar to capably handle different styles. The JB is hot, but not as hot as say the Gibson 500T. It plays 80s rock with panache, holds down the blues just fine, but is maybe a little thin on heavier metal riffs and a little too snarly for the delicate stuff. The neck and middle staggered stacks are just slightly hotter than a stock Strat pickups, I'd call them equivalent to the current Noiseless products. The neck is warm and fairly full sounding, the middle twangy and more biting. Together they cop a decent neck bucker sound, though a little harsher because of the middle's bite, and they certainly contrast the JB well. Putting the middle with the JB makes a nice blues lead tone, big, warm, and sizzling with sharp attack.
It reminds me of a black Porsche... it's hard to describe until you actually see it. A basic black paint job doesn't usually look this luxe! One note, if you get the black, it will show EVERY bead of sweat, speck of dust, fingerprint, etc, like you put it up on a big screen TV.
The stock action was set up nearly perfectly out of the box. I only had to raise the D string a nudge to get rid of a little buzz.

Sounds Flat and had a problem with volume knob
Overall good quality, just a minor issue with volume knob scratching at the end of it, almost like and on off type of effect.
Brand new only time will tell
Your general opinion of this product.
Over priced, the bridge pickup is week, I even swapped it out for Duncan Distortion and it sounds better but not as strong as my other guitars with same pickup in the bridge.
Neck feels heavy and thick like a bat, feels like a Gibson, but as you play it you get use to it and find it more comfortable and easier to play and actually better than most others.
thin and flat and mid tone. Front two pickups are the worse, they even sound worse than my Fender Strat. Not much tone and not loud or clear.
Paint Job was awesome, very good quality, like a car.
Action was ok, but for what I play and like, I had some fret mill work done to it, and brought the action down much lower, otherwise the Neck was perfect.
