Product Description

The Laney Cub 12R features great straight ahead vintage valve tone with a splash of high quality reverb. The Cub 12R houses a HH 12 inch driver and pushes out up to 15 watts RMS of pure vintage valve tone, we say up to 15 watts RMS as it has the option of running at significantly less output but more on that in a moment.

Lets take a look at the preamp, this consists of the following controls from right to left - gain, treble, middle, bass, volume, tone and finally reverb.

The Cub 12R's valve complement consists of 3 x ECC83 valves in the preamp giving you the ability to dial in plenty of gain, and the output section consists of 2 x EL84 output valves, which give you that classic British tonality to the amp when they are pushed hard. The Cub 12R features a nifty output trick - if you look at the front panel you'll notice two input sockets, one labelled 15W, the other labelled <1W. If you plug into the 15W socket you get the full power of the amp, 15 Watts of wonderfully warm valve tone. Plug into the <1W and you get .75 of a Watt output. This allows you to drive the amplifier as hard as you like, giving you masses of power amp compression and a pleasing break up for that elusive DARK ART tone.

The Cub 12R's rear panel features everything you'll need, additional speaker outs with both 8 and 16 Ohm options, a footswitch socket for switching the reverb and an effects loop. The Cub 12R offers a welcome addition to the Laney tube amp range giving everyone the opportunity to experience the sound and feel of a good quality tube amp.

What is your opinion of this product?
The Laney Cub series has been on my radar for couple of years. After 15+ yrs of self/best buddy instruction I’ve begun lessons from a professional musician/teacher so a practice type amp became a need. This amp delivers! Sounds great plugged into the 15W “when the wife is out” input, plus the 1W input is fantastic for low volume, distorted tone, all in all very satisfied so far. Laney brings it in a awesome tube tone combo! PS-love the chicken ?? head knobs too!

Pretty sweet
What is your opinion of this product?
Was looking for something a little more portable for small clubs, open mics, etc. Been a Strat/Marshall guy for over 30 yrs.and pretty set on that sound. Researched choices for quite a while, played as many of the low watt amps as I could, and found I could come pretty close to my DSL sound with the Laney. Had it for a couple weeks now, so still waiting for some break in to decide on the speaker, but it holds it's own in a full band and throw a TS in there and becomes a little monster... Happy with my choice. Plus AMS had a one day flash sale that knocked it down to $299! That really sealed the deal.

nice amp
What is your opinion of this product?
I have owned this for a few months. It gives a nice, clean sound and can get a nice bite out of it. it is a "vintage" amp with one channel and a pre and post gain like fenders. It isn't as bright as fender which balances well with strats. Reverb is fine but I'm no judge since I don't use reverb anyway. Love the "tone" knob which acts like a guitar volume pot. can get a quick change of tone on the fly/live shows. I bought a celestion v30 speaker and sounds really good. HH speaker is fine but I wanted a bit more power and gain, which a bigger magnet speaker provides. Again, the original speaker is fine by mean soundwise.

so far so good
What is your opinion of this product?
This is my third CUB 12R in 2 months, first one from AMS. First one had a Polyswitch issue, second died in 60 seconds after unpacking. This arrived on time from AMS and has been functioning perfectly so far. This little amp, though fabricated in CHINA, has that english tone and warms up nicely with single coils. That Blackmore grit sound. I swapped the tubes for Mullard and the speaker for a weber blue dog. What difference in performance! Great pice point to start and modestly mod. For my ears, better than a blues jr could ever be after mods. The 1 watt step down, makes driving at low volume a great recording option. I could not give 5 stars with the modifications done on my end.

Great Amp - definitely recommend
Your general opinion of this product.
I am very pleased with this purchase. The amp is versatile and can go clean, bluesy or metallic easily. I like the <1W, 15W input choices, which allow me to drive the amp, but not bring the police to my doorstep.
The quality looks good, and I like the feel of the knobs and the way that they are precise, but move fluidly.
The controls are easy to get to and are arranged in such a way that I don't need to read them to know what I am adjusting. There is a logical order to them.
The tone is easily varied, and can grind, snap, whine, thump or sing. Celestion speakers are always a plus in this area. They produce great sounds.
Nothing has been required yet regarding the amps out of the box functionality. Works great.
Looks good. I originally didn't like the non-square speaker opening, but now I am thinking that it is distinctive.
I have had the amp a month. I have played a couple of hours most of those days and have had no issues and haven't found any shortcomings. So far I am feeling like I got quite a deal.

Tough to beat for the money
Your general opinion of this product.
I was looking for a small tube amp that could keep up with drummer and would spare my back (my AC15 was killing me). I didn't want a Blues Junior as we already have one in the band. This little guy fit the bill and I had money left over after selling my Vox.
So far so good; I'm rehearsing with this amp every couple of weeks. No standby switch - might be hard on the tubes over time. Build quality of the cabinet is so-so - about what I would expect at the price point.
The tone is darker, less chimey that the AC15, but quite pleasant. I think I like the overdriven sound better. The stock speaker is the weak point - it's inefficient (good for practice at home but made cutting through with the full band a chore) and a bit lifeless. I replaced the stock Celestion with an Emminence Private Jack - much louder and clearer. The amp really jumps now.
I've had this amp for about 9 months. So far so good.

Great Small Tube Amp
It looks to be well made, as best I can tell. All the details like the handle, the knobs, the tubes, and the screws point to good manufacturing. But I didn't open it up.
Haven't owned it for long, so I don't know.
Your general opinion of this product.
I really wanted the sound of a tube amp in a small package which I could mic and then send through house speakers. But I also wanted an effects loop. Not easy to find both in one amp, but this little guy does it. I'm really glad I found it.
This is a weird thing to say, but the handle is really comfortable. Combine that with how light it is, and I actually like to pick this amp up. Weird. My only complaint about the whole amp is that the order of the knobs is seemingly random. When I want to change something, I have to hunt for the knob I want because they didn't stick with the order every other amp uses, so my head can't seem to grasp which knob is which. I love, on the other hand, the feel of the knobs. It seems like with a lot of amps, a majority of the volume increase is between 2 and 3 and 4-10 make no difference. But the knobs feel very linear on this amp.
Bluesy, with good bark. I think it's all the tube tone of a big tube amp. But you can crank it without any concern for volume, so in most situations you can get better tone with this guy.
Attention to detail is great, but I don't care for the signature trapezoidal shape of the front grille. A rectangle would have done it for me. But I didn't buy it for the front grille.

Great little amp!
UK tone, Chinese cousins. Everything seems sturdy and in working order, too soon to tell. I've heard the light indicating the amps on can go up. Has not happened to me yet.
Again, to soon to tell. It appears well constructed and I have faith.
Your general opinion of this product.
I was happy oveall, I wanted something affordable with decent tube tone. Something for Blues, Rock and easy to get around.

Tone knob and three band eq give you a decent control over the brightness(or harshness) of the amp. It sounds good, I use a Les Paul Special with p-100s. I like some bite, a regular Les Paul pick-up would shine with this amp as well.
Beautiful design, encourages you to play it when it's in the corner looking all sleek and sexy.
