Product Description

The Laney Cub Head finally gives players access to great British valve tone like never before. The retro styled Cub Head features a top mounted control panel consisting of the following; gain, treble, middle, bass, volume, tone and reverb. Dialling in a great valve tone is simple - select your input - 15 W or <1 W : more on these controls in a moment, dial in your tone, add a taste of high quality reverb and away you go.

Laney Cub Head Guitar Amp Head Features

  • One input gives 15 watts of power, second input gives .75 watts power for driving the tubes at a low volume
  • 3 x ECC83 tubes in the preamp and 2 EL84's in the power section for great British tone
  • Built in gain and 3 band EQ
  • Footswitchable built in reverb (footswitch optional)
  • Built in effects loop and 8/16 ohm speaker outputs
The Cub Head houses 3 x ECC83's in its preamp and 2 x EL84's in the power amp section, all hand selected to give the best valve tone possible. Lets go back for a moment and look at the inputs on the Cub Head. The Cub Head has two input options, one giving you 15W RMS of valve tone, the other giving you a huge valve sound, but cutting the output down to .75 of a Watt. .75 of a Watt might not sound like much, but it allows you to drive the output section really hard and generate some very pleasing power amp compression and pleasing break up giving you that holy grail of guitar tone!

The rear panel of the Cub Head houses two speaker out sockets in 8 and 16 Ohm options, a footswitch socket for switching the reverb and an effects loop consisting of a Send/Line out socket and a return socket. The Cub Head can be paired with any Laney cabinet but is ideally suited to the Cub Cab.

Decent little tube amp
What is your opinion of this product?
I like that I can switch from one watt to 15 watts. It comes with Ruby brand tubes which is cool for a made in China amp. It sounded a little flat or lackluster when I first plugged into it but, now that it's getting some break in time, I'm finding some musical tones.

Great single channel amp
Your general opinion of this product.
Compared to the fender super champ x2 at $299 and the jet city 22h which I also own, this amp has great tone albeit only one channel. It does however, have two input jacks. One for 15 watts and the other for .75 of one watt which is great for playing without headphones and not bothering the neighbors or family. The tone, grind, playability remains and you can drive the output[el-84's] nicely. It also boasts a gain and volume, bass, middle, treble, and a tone knob. Plenty of tweaking available. The reverb is digital but sounds surprisingly good but don't expect to get the "surf-sound" from it. You can use either the 8 or 16ohm speaker jacks, but only one or the other which is no big deal really imo. No standby switch either, same as the fender. The power cable is hard wired and has its own little storage pocket with a velcro tie. The power cable is short[about 4ft] and only 18awg. Most are at least 16awg. I intend to upgrade this to a longer heavier wire when the warranty expires.
I bought this as a dent and scratch and besides 3 of the finish washers flattened from overtight screws, it was fine. Nothing special quality wise and you can see where they used cheaper parts to cut costs like on many other overseas amps. The unit gets pretty hot after a while, mainly because the tubes are top mounted like you would find in a combo. The outer power tube is very close to the power cord but guarded by the metal grille on the back. I barely had enough clearance to hook up my 12awg speaker cable with "jumbo" connectors due to where the speaker outs are located.
I could get about every tone/sound I wanted from this thing. The exceptions would be extreme clean or extreme heavy metal. You can get a good clean but probably not at a loud enough volume/headroom for gigging, especially with a drummer. This thing shines at bedroom levels at the .75watt setting and for recording. Rehearsals and small venues at the 15watt level if you don't need a loud clean. It cleans up well using the guitars volume. Any clean boost stomp box and/or graphic[like the MXR M108] would help for gigging as would a 2x12 or 4x12 cab.
Gets bright, dark, and between nicely. Good amount of lows too on my strat through a Rocktron S-112 cab. I havn't tried it with 2 of them yet.
Good dynamics when you find the sweet spot between gain/volume knobs and your guitars volume.
It looks great. Retro classic. The handle is comfortable though a bit small for big hands. Only weighs about 20lbs. About the same size as the fender head but taller. Smaller than the jet city by a little.
Who knows. It does seem to run hotter than the jet city or fender and the heat from the tubes will get the components and pcb board extra wear over time. But so does a Vox AC30.

Rowdy Little Thing
Very well made product. Very tight. So far, it has been very dependable.
So far so good. I have had the amp 2 months...and no problems...knock on wood.
Your general opinion of this product.
This amp is awesome and delivers sweet EL84 tone in droves. The amp is also lightweight and easy to carry. It has a less than 1 watt input(which is surprisingly loud). A very well built little amp/
This amp is very responsive to the player's touch.
This amp delivers warm yet bright clean tones with sparkle when dialed in right. This amp also serves up a warm yet biting overdrive that cuts through.

N/A- The amp was ready to play straight out of the box. Plugged in my 8 ohm cab and fired her up.
