What is the difference between a Mackie Control Universal and a Mackie Control?
The Mackie Control Universal merges the Mackie Control and Logic Control technologies into one professional control surface. The Mackie Control Universal will allow you to boot the control surface in one of three modes, Mackie Control, HUI, or Logic Control. The default labeling on the Mackie Control Universal will be for Logic. Lexan overlays are included for each of the other software programs that support the Mackie Control Universal.
How do I update my Mackie Control/Logic Control to a Mackie Control Universal?
Mackie Control and Logic Control users may download a firmware update for their control surface and extenders. This update will allow you to boot the controller in either Mackie Control mode or Logic Control Mode.
Will the Mackie Control Universal include the HUI Mode?
Yes! All new Mackie Control Universals will have HUI Mode for Pro Tools. This means you can use it as a Mackie Control, Logic Control, or HUI/Pro Tools. If you already own a Logic Control or Mackie Control, the Basic Update is free.
What is a "Lexan overlay" and why do I need one?
A Lexan overlay is a thin sheet of polycarbonate that has DAW-specific nomenclature on the front side and an adhesive on the back. It is designed to be placed over the master section of the Mackie Control Universal and associate the buttons and controls with specific software commands.
Lexan overlays included, one each, with the Mackie Control Universal are for Digidesign Pro Tools, MOTU Digital Performer, Cakewalk SONAR, Syntrillium Cool Edit Pro, Steinberg Cubase, and Steinberg Nuendo. All other overlays including for RML Labs SAWStudio are available online. You can request these and any extra Lexan overlays from the Mackie web site. Overlays are $10 each plus a $10 shipping and handling cost for each order.
How do I connect the Mackie Control Universal to my computer?
The Mackie Control Universal is a MIDI device, which means you must have a minimum of one available port (both in and out) on a standard MIDI Interface, connected and running on your computer.
Because of the wide variety of MIDI interfaces available today, ranging from single port Serial/USB interfaces to PCI cards, Mackie Designs makes no official recommendation for a specific type of MIDI interface to be used with Mackie Control Universal.
Can I use the Mackie Control Universal as an audio mixer?
In a sense...Mackie Control Universal will control your virtual mixer that lives within your preferred audio application. As you move the faders on the Mackie Control Universal, you will see the adjustments being made on the screen and you will hear the results through your audio interface. Hence the Mackie Control Universal gives you the feeling that you are using an audio mixer even though no audio signals are actually passing through it.
Are there any options available for use with the Mackie Control Universal?
Yes! You can add more faders to Mackie Control Universal with the Mackie Control Universal Extender. The Mackie Control Universal Extender has all the same features as the regular channel strips on the Mackie Control Universal without the master section. The Mackie Control Universal Extender is designed to let you extend your control surface as desired, while utilizing just one Mackie Control Universal as the master section for a true expandable control surface.
