The MIDAS Legacy
Founded in the early 1970’s as a manufacturer of transistor guitar amplifiers and speakers, MIDAS first made a name for themselves in the fledgling world of Pro Audio in 1974 with a small, modular mixer called the PR System; often referred to as PRO4. This groundbreaking console’s name was derived from their flagship PR 004 input module, which offered an exceptional microphone preamp and high-quality channel equalization. The first dedicated MIDAS monitor console was introduced in 1975, with Clair Brothers Audio employing them in touring rigs for such high-profile clients as Elvis Presley, Yes, Billy Joel, and The Beach Boys.

MIDAS consoles quickly became the industry standard for live sound reinforcement on major concert tours. Pink Floyd utilized a MIDAS console featuring separate master quadraphonic and stereo outputs for 1977’s Animals tour. 1979’s The Wall tour saw them raise the stakes even further, with MIDAS providing a console sporting no fewer than 105 channels of custom-built quadraphonic sound. Frank Zappa employed a custom-made MIDAS PRO5 console for his 1980 world tour, plus a MIDAS-supplied dedicated recording console to allow every concert to be simultaneously recorded onto 24, 8 and 2 tracks.

Not exclusively a concert tour staple, MIDAS consoles were also introduced to the world of musical theatre in the 1970’s. Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber and Sir Tim Rice created many major stage productions; many of which became hugely successful and went on to play around the world. And when live theatre designer Abe Jacob needed to choose the ideal sound console for acclaimed shows such as “Cats” and “Evita”, of course he specified MIDAS.

MIDAS continued into the 1980’s with the PR 40 series; often referred to as PRO40. Their XL console, the first of the XL Series, was launched at the New York Audio Engineering Society Convention in 1986, followed by the XL3, XL4, Heritage Series and Legend 3000 analog consoles. However, it wasn’t until the introduction of the XL8 in 2006 that MIDAS entered the brave new world of digital consoles — and their unparalleled success in this field culminates with today’s PRO X and M32 models.

Legendary MIDAS Sound Quality
MIDAS has always been world-renown for their uncompromising quality and the ultimate in sound reproduction. The latest descendent of a celebrated lineage that literally set the standard for electrical design and pristine sound, the M32R is more than just a pretty face — it carries the family’s acclaimed sonic legacy with pride, thanks to award-winning MIDAS PRO Series microphone preamplifiers and industry-leading 192 kHz ADC and DAC converters. With its future-proof 96 kHz capable open architecture design, the M32R is a console built not just for today, but for tomorrow as well.

Award-Winning MIDAS Mic Preamplifier
When leading live sound and recording engineers lay high praise on the famous MIDAS sound, they’re actually paying homage to MIDAS’ award-winning mic preamps; the very essence of that sound. The glorious result of combining more than 40 years of design experience with the highest-quality components, MIDAS mic preamps not only deliver warmth and depth while bringing out subtle ambience; they maintain accurate spatial positioning and more effectively capture a precise sonic image. That’s the MIDAS sound.

The microphone preamplifiers utilized in the M32R are the exact same ones used in the industry standard MIDAS XL4 and HERITAGE 3000 consoles, considered by many to be the pinnacle of all analog live mixers. Throughout the years, the XL4 and HERITAGE 3000 have lent their widely-acclaimed, transparent sound to productions by top artists such as Sir Paul McCartney, AC/DC, Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi, Christina Aguilera, Metallica, Alanis Morrisette, Pearl Jam, Kid Rock, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, and many more.

“Mind to Sound” User Interface
You may already have years of experience working with digital live sound consoles. Or perhaps you’re more of an old school, analog type. Regardless, you’ll feel right at home with the MIDAS M32R thanks to its brilliant and highly versatile, yet intuitive “mind to sound” user interface. The workflow unfurls in a way that completely removes obstacles, confusion, and indecision; and the combination of motorized faders, tactile controls, and an array of LCD and TFT displays offers immediate familiarity that will instill confidence in just about any operator. Consider technophobia a thing of the past with the M32R.

M32R Channel Strip
MIDAS has applied decades of console design and input from hundred of professional sound engineers into designing the M32R’s channel strip. You’ll find the most important channel parameters all neatly arranged into one section — so the configuration is always the same, regardless of which channel you’re working on.

Illuminated “pots” — aka rotary data encoders — and switches offer highly-efficient control of preamp settings, frequency shelving, dual dynamics sections, as well as multi-mode fully parametric EQ, bus sends, main, mono and stereo panning. The carefully-calibrated backlighting of these controls guarantees that you’ll clearly see levels or status from any angle.

5" TFT Main Display
MIDAS has selected TFT (Thin-Film Transistor) as its preferred format for the M32R’s main display for one very good reason — visibility. Ideal for concert and open-air festival venues, the M32R’s 5" day-viewable color TFT display offers high-contrast performance and exceptional outdoor clarity.

Surrounded by precise, ultra-sensitive tactile knobs, the screen displays the settings options you need when you need them. All adjustments applied to a wide range of parameters are immediately reported; while ergonomic design places control of vital functions such as Effects, Metering, Routing and much more just one or two button presses away.

Sends On Fader
The M32R’s Sends on Fader feature brings the luxury of digital mixing to your Aux and output bus mixes as well. This marvelously convenient function allows you to build versatile, dedicated sub-mixes for monitor, secondary zone feeds, and much more — completely independent of the front-of-house mix. Send your choice of signals to any Aux or output bus, then create the optimum mix utilizing the channel faders. The M32R will remember where the faders were positioned and instantly recall their settings when a bus is selected.

The Flexibility of Eight DCA Groups
Most live sound techs are familiar with the concept of subgroups, which permit control over several signals at once via a single fader. Applications for subgroups typically include control of the entire drum mix, the horn section, the backup vocalists, etc. The M32R’s eight DCA (Digitally Controlled Amplifier) groups allow you accomplish the same consolidation of multiple signals without actually mixing them into a subgroup bus. DCA control affects the front-of-house mix, while individual buses remain unaltered. You’ll enjoy the flexibility and control of a tailor-made “sub mix”, while individual buses and subgroups continue to handle their more traditional roles, such as zone feeds, broadcast feeds, etc.

Eleven “View Function” Buttons
Need immediate access to information about a specific M32R function? There are no fewer than eleven View buttons associated with various functions conveniently located across the M32R. For example, press the View button in the Equalizer section, and all related parameters for a specific channel’s EQ is instantly shown on the main display for comprehensive editing. Never before have engineers enjoyed this level of visual fine-tuning at anywhere near the price point of a MIDAS M32R.

"Acoustic Integration" with TURBOSOUND iQ Speakers
If you’re also considering the purchase of TURBOSOUND iQ Series speakers here at American Musical Supply, you’re on the right track — because the M32R’s ULTRANET bus allows you to stream up to 16 channels of immaculate digital audio to an array of TURBOSOUND iQ speakers on a single CAT5 cable. You can also apply a variety of speaker models in real time from the M32R, along with control data to adjust sound presets remotely. MIDAS and TURBOSOUND have dubbed this amazingly versatile and proprietary protocol “Acoustic Integration” — and it promises to be the next live sound revolution.

100-Band RTA for all Channel/Bus EQs
With the MIDAS M32R, monitoring and controlling frequencies has never been easier. The M32-EDIT control application offers you a 100-band Real Time Analyzer (RTA) with full bar and spectrograph views. It accurately displays audio energy distribution in 100 frequency bands over time and even captures a sonogram window of 10 seconds’ duration.

Switch between the large RTA view to display any available signal at full screen resolution. Or use the Combined view, which displays the RTA view above each of the channel and bus EQ curves. Additionally, the RTA can be displayed above the 31-band graphic EQs in the FX rack.

True Physical Modeling of Vintage Outboard Gear
We daresay there isn’t a sound engineer alive who hasn’t wanted to mix with legendary outboard gear such as Urei’s 1176*, Teletronix LA-2A* and Fairchild 670* compressors; or the venerable Pultec* EQP-1a and EQ5 equalizers. MIDAS has digitally “rebuilt” these highly sought-after analogue processors by adding 16 breathtaking FX “Plug-Ins” to the M32R.

You now have instant access to a total of more than 50 effects that otherwise could only be obtained by investing in tens of thousands of dollars in vintage hardware. But lest you think MIDAS has renounced modern outboard gear, they’ve also included a state-of-the-art 5-band multiband compressor and an extensive array of onboard effects via their Virtual FX rack (described below).

Virtual FX Rack
It’s pretty much common knowledge and common practice in the Pro Audio industry that outboard effects processors are a thing of the past. Onboard “plug-ins” rule the day, and the M32R’s Virtual FX rack is loaded with an extensive array of them. From reverbs to delays, EQs to dynamics, classic processors to the unimaginable — you name it, you’ve got it. No fewer than eight true-stereo, studio-grade effects engines can be assigned to any input, group or output mix bus.

MIDAS’ Virtual FX are custom-designed, and physically modeled after some of the most iconic and sought-after vintage processors, such as the Lexicon 480L; Quantec QRS; Sony Oxford Dynamics; EMT250 Plate Reverb; Roland Dimension D Chorus; and many, many more. All effects run within the low-latency environment of the M32R’s mix engine, ensuring accurate performance, flexible routing, and the end of mid-show cable failures.

Gain Splitting and Remote Control for FOH and Monitoring
Not unlike traditional FOH and Monitor consoles sharing the same input signals via a mic/line splitter, the M32R allows each engineer to adjust local trim independently of the preamp gain. Console gains can also be controlled remotely from an external console, such as when using the M32R as a stage box.

Routing and Processing Flexibility
The highly flexible routing system within MIDAS’ M32R console offers separation of Output signals and the XLR outputs. This innovative and fully discrete system allows you to route signals from expansion cards or AES50 sources directly to the M32R’s analog outputs.

One way you can put this feature to great use is when directly routing back PA or monitoring signals from a main or FOH console via the M32R’s outputs. You can also set output tap points as pre- or post-mute for optimum synergy with P16 personal monitoring mixers, avoiding situations where mute groups could cause undesirable muting of signals.

Powerful New Tools for Scene and Show Management
The M32R’s Cue List is capable of automatically loading any of 100 Scenes or Snippets individually or at the same time via its 500 Cue entries. This gives you an incredible total of 500 Cues x 100 Scenes x 100 Snippets; all loadable during the show!

Store your favorite EQ settings for drums, horn section, keyboards, etc. on a group of channels as a Snippet, then recall it instantly as its own preset, thoroughly autonomous of the M32R’s global scene. It’s like taking a photo of your settings for an input, return, FX slot, bus, Matrix, Main, or DCA group — and saving it immediate recall whenever it may be needed.

The MIDAS PRO FADER – Rated for 1 Million Life Cycles
It’s not easy to design and manufacture a motorized fader capable of one million life cycles. In fact, it had never been done before. But if anyone was capable of accomplishing such an “impossible” task, it could only be MIDAS.

Manufactured from semi-precious metals and precision components, MIDAS PRO FADERS offer exceptional linearity, sturdiness, and a polished, silky-smooth feel — plus a previously unattainable level of reliability that delivers quality performance night after night, year after year, show after show.

LCD Scribble Strips
Throw away that roll of masking tape, because the M32R has a total of twenty-nine programmable LCD Scribble Strips for channel/bus identification. These simple, elegant and highly effective tags can also display easily recognizable icons. You can even assign colors to create visual groups for immediate, on-the-fly recognition of related inputs — blue for drums; yellow for vocals; red for horns; etc.

Ultimate Connectivity and Expansion
Each M32 comes loaded with all of the connectivity, I/O and functionality you need, right out of the box – but it doesn’t end there. Onboard USB 2.0 connectivity delivers a full 32 x 32 channels of audio and MIDI to your DAW. Integrated multi-channel digital audio interfaces connect to remote stage boxes and/or the P16 Personal Monitor System. Native Ethernet control enables remote operation by computer, iPad or iPhone over a wired or wireless network, across the room – or across the planet!

Dual AES50 network ports featuring KLARK TEKNIK SuperMAC technology support up to 96 inputs and 96 outputs over shielded (STP) CAT5 cable, allowing remote stage boxes and sharing signals among several connected M32s and other MIDAS, KLARK TEKNIK and AES50-equipped products.

On-board ULTRANET provides a 16-channel digital mix direct to P16 Personal Monitor Mixers, without added hardware, cost or latency.

Ethernet, USB and MIDI are all standard features on M32.

An additional expansion slot is also included, so that the M32 can connect to current and future digital audio networks and link protocols via a wide range of expansion cards including USB, FireWire*, ADAT*, MADI and Audinate Dante*.
