With the Pioneer XDJ-RX, there’s more than meets the eye. Two dazzling media players, an intuitive mixer loaded with extras, and a massive full-color display provide hands-on control for creating a powerful playback performance. Best of all, the XDJ-RX plays all of your tunes directly from a USB flash drive – there is no longer any need to drag your computer or laptop to the gig. The key lies in the proprietary Pioneer rekordbox software. This music management software makes it possible to edit, prepare, and save audio files directly to a portable USB flash drive – making your entire music library completely portable. Plug the USB drive into the XDJ-RX and use the color LCD screen to browse your music files by Artist, Album, Track, Playlist, History, and Folder. The second USB drive receptacle on the front panel allows you to record your entire performance at the touch of a button. The Pioneer XDJ-RX also accommodates multiple analog and digital input sources [including USB, MIDI, and PC Link] and is compatible with Native Instruments TRAKTOR® PRO2 DJ software. You can even use the XDJ-RX as an excellent stand-alone DJ mixer by patching turntables and other external music sources to the Line/Phono inputs.
A Bold Vision
Located at the top of the Pioneer XDJ-RX’s mixer panel is a bright, bold, 7-inch, full color LCD screen capable of providing a wealth of well-organized data to help you maximize your performance. Illuminated buttons below and to the left of the screen determine what data is being displayed. Below the display is a data knob and a series of buttons that allow you to scroll through the display and select items quickly. Here, you can browse your files by album, artist, track, etc. After loading tracks to both decks, the display can show the title, track number, time remaining, tempo, key, and other useful information.
In addition, the display can simultaneously show data from both players, including the waveform display – with five levels of zoom – as well as playback position, tempo, and beat grids. The mixer itself features two channels – one for each playback deck. Each channel features identical functions, including a trim knob, 3-band isolator EQ, Color FX knob, and a multi-segment bar-graph LED meter. Both the Sound Color FX [Noise; Gate/Compression; Crush; Filter] and Beat FX [Delay; Echo; Spiral; Reverb; Transformer; Flanger; Pitch; Roll] are also accessed using the mixer section, as is the headphone cue mix and crossfader controls. Located above the left-hand deck are the MIC 1 and MIC 2 volume knobs, as well as the 2-band Mic EQ. Above the right-hand deck are the Booth Monitor and Master Level knobs.
Dual Deck Design
The symmetrical design of the Pioneer XDJ-RX places identical playback decks on either side of the main mixer. Each deck is highlighted by an illuminated jog wheel offering an adjustable Vinyl mode, Reverse direction, and Slip mode buttons. Search and Track Search buttons allow you to quickly move forward or backward through the song or set list to find just the right spot. Beneath the jog platters are four illuminated pads that can be assigned to trigger Hot Cues and Auto-Beat Loops. New to the XDJ-RX is the automatic Loop Slice feature that instantly divides a loop into perfectly-timed segments that are playable from the pads. The Shift feature changes the timing value of the pads. All of this is in addition to the Cue/Loop controls at the top of each deck. The Tempo slider offers an adjustable scale for getting the right feel, and either deck can be set to the Master for beat-sync’ing operations.
Cable Convenience
The Pioneer XDJ-RX provides all the right connections in the most popular formats so you can get hooked up and started instantly. The Master Output signal is available through both XLR balanced jacks to interface with the house sound system at any venue, and a pair of stereo RCA jacks for connecting other audio devices. The Booth output is delivered via a set of stereo TRS balanced 1/4" jacks. Mic 1 features a combined XLR/TRS 1/4" jack; Mic 2 is a convenient 1/4" unbalanced input. Each mixer channel offers an additional set of stereo RCA jacks that can be set to either a phono or line level signal. A grounding lug is provided for hum-free turntable use. The rear-mounted USB port connects to your computer rig; two independent top-mounted USB slots accept USB flash drives to access your music library, or to record your performance in real time (USB 2 only). Finally, an Ethernet port is provided so that you can connect a Wi-Fi router and access the XDJ-RX remotely from a wireless device.
