Product Description

More than 2-1/2 years in the making, the Silver Sky is a remarkable collaboration between PRS and John Mayer! This vintage-inspired guitar is both familiar and a whole-new playing experience thanks to close attention to detail and direction from John himself. Based on some Mayer’s favorite elements from 1963 and 1964 vintage instruments, PRS has come up with a guitar that will exceed expectations of the most discerning guitarists!

Some of the more distinctive specifications include the headstock shape, tuners, neck and fretboard, bridge and pickup and electronics. The headstock shape is based on PRS's trademark design but invented to both accommodate Mayer's playing style and also to keep a consistent length of string behind the nut, which makes staying in tune easier. The tuners are a traditional vintage-style, closed-back tuner but with PRS's locking design.

The neck shape was modeled after 1963/1964 vintage instruments and the fretboard has a 7.25" radius. The moment your hand grabs this neck, it just feels right. Like the tuners, the steel tremolo takes a classic design and incorporates PRS's trem arm and Gen III knife-edge screws. The bridge on the Silver Sky is setup flush to the body in the neutral position so that the tremolo bridge only goes down in pitch. By keeping the bridge in contact with the body, the guitar itself is acoustically louder which improves the signal to noise ratio of the single-coil pickups. The 635JM single-coils are very round and full with a musical high end that is never ‘Ice-picky’ or brash.

Other high quality specifications include a bone nut, a molded metal jack plate that is curved and makes plugging and unplugging a cable hassle-free, retooled knobs, fretwire that is slightly smaller than found on most PRS guitars and PRS's double action truss rod.

Product Review

This is my first PRS, as well as my first SLO (Stratocaster-Like Object). First, let me say that if this is standard production quality of PRS... then PRS has an amazing quality assurance program. The construction and finish are flawless. PLAYABILITY is the word that comes to mind - not just playability, but, such a comfortable fit to the body and fretting hand, I find myself reaching for the Silver Sky before grabbing another guitar. The frets are a little smaller than I am used to, which may take some adjustment... and the guitar likes to tell on me when my fretting is a little lazy. I’ve heard the ruckus regarding the fretboard radius - I have no issue switching from an Ibanez archtop or, from a Gibson Les Paul and - the smaller radius and thinner neck actually make Hendrix style hand-grip enjoyable. I have also heard the noise regarding the cheap feeling volume and tone knobs and tuners — and for the price point, I have to agree. This however, doesn’t change the playability of the guitar at all. I did mention PLAYABILITY, right? This is a gorgeous guitar, with a lot of R&D hours behind it, and it shows aesthetically just as it sounds amazing to the ears. My only regret is not pulling the trigger on one sooner.

A Veritable Palette of Tone all day long!

Product Review

I had the opportunity to play a Silver Sky locally through a vintage Super Reverb and pretty much knew from the first note that I would be owning this guitar! All the switch positions provide a usable palette of sound. The tone controls then allow you to fine tune that sound and they work in a very controlled and balanced fashion. I just kept dialing around and found all the clean and slightly driven sounds I was looking for. And the neck is butter! Having seen JM's instagram video explaining the initial idea behind introducing this guitar, then the 3 year process of bringing it to life, I had to admit I was all in. I can't tell you how many Saturdays were spent driving to every music shop in town looking for the "one" perfect "S-style" guitar. Usually, playing dozens or more, maybe finding one, often finding none. What if the perfect guitar (by JM's specs) could be made 100 out of 100 times? That was the challenge put to PRS, and from what I've experienced so far, I think they've pulled it off! While I do believe in supporting my local music stores, the AMS payment plans available made a purchase of this sort much more palatable. Having purchased guitars through AMS previously, I was also confident the guitar I would receive would be spot on. I was not disappointed. The build quality is pure PRS and the setup was perfect. If you are looking for a Strat style single pickup guitar that will provide tone for days, look no further!

Tone Central

Product Review

I ordered my Silver Sky a couple of weeks ago from American Musical. I’ll be the first to admit I’m a big John Mayer Fan but that’s not the reason why I bought the guitar. The quality of Prs is what sold me on the guitar. I have 7 other core models, and have never been disappointed with them. I hadn’t gotten to play a silver sky before purchasing this one so I didn’t have any expectations before it came in, I just knew it would be a quality guitar because of the name on the headstock. When it came in and I took it out of the gig bag, the quality and finish of the guitar did not disappoint. The tone of the pick ups are fantastic and of course it nails the Mayer tone, but it also hits all of the other tones that a single coil guitar of this type is know for. The pickups are very well balanced, I can actually say I like all of them. The bridge pickup isn’t too harsh even with the tone knob all the way up, and speaking of tone knobs. These actually work as intended, they don’t just disappear below 6, or 7. Love the fact that the bridge pickup is wired to a tone knob as well. Every position on the 5 way switch is very usable in a band setting. I absolutely love the neck, it’s perfect. I still kinda wish it had a 10” radius like most of the other Prs guitars but this 7.25 is very comfortable and I’m going to lower the action a tad to see if it’ll fret out but as of now it’s not. Also don’t let being a fan of Mayer and his Fender relationship keep you from trying this awesome guitar. Trust me it’s worth it. In short I’d recommend this guitar to anyone. The only disappointment I’ve had is it’s a $2,300 guitar and comes with a gig bag. I don’t like the gig bag, if it were the quality of say a Reunion Blues I wouldn’t mind it at all. The gig-bag seems cheap.

Amazing

Product Review

PRS sends out the best product. Every guitar is set up perfect before shipped. No problem whatsoever. People always compare this guitar to a Strat, which is fair. A good Strat will cost less, but is sometimes hit or miss with the quality. Now if you’re looking for the sound of a 60’s Strat, you’ll pay a hell of a lot more and still get a hit or miss guitar. There is no miss on this guitar and the sound is amazing and feels great too when playing. Enjoy
