Shure KSM44 Common Applications
The KSM44/SL is designed as a premium vocal microphone for studio recording. Microphone use, however, is a matter of personal taste. Here is a non-exhaustive list of common applications:
  • Vocals -- solo, background, voice-over
  • Acoustic instruments -- such as piano, guitar, drums, percussion, strings
  • Wind instruments -- brass and woodwind
  • Low frequency instruments -- such as double bass, electric bass, kick drum
  • Overhead miking -- drums or percussion
  • Ensembles -- choral or orchestral Room ambiance pick-up -- guitar amplifier or drums

Both the acoustic environment and microphone placement have significant effects on the sound obtained when miking any sound source. Shure encourage users to experiment with these variables to achieve the best overall sound.

Product Review

i previously owned a shure ksm44 NOT the ksm44a. i didn't have much experience but i had money and i decided to be SHURE about how i spent it. at the time the original ksm44 was going for $699 so i jumped on it. i used it quite a bit and was always completely and utterly satisfied with the result. i didn't know what i had however and i let it go:^( long story short when i listen back to what i was recording and how it sounds now i'm kicking my own rear as i'm simply blown away at how good it sounds compared to other mice i've worked with since. this mic is honest yet flattering without over-emphasizing any frequencies. i can't wait to hear how the NEW prethos preamp sounds. instead of dropping $3500 on a neumann get two of these AND a kick ass preamp;^)

Absolute quality product..built like a tank to rigorous standards

I would no change a thing. each polar pattern gives a different frequency response.

Very easy to use. If a mic can be ergonomically designed, this is it.

Wonderful mid-forward tone in cardiod. Excels at vocal..no harsh top -end. On the brighter side in Ricardo, but when Shure say this is a professional studio mic, they mean it. This mic makes my voice sound the way I imagined it is supposed to, but slightly better. Not a 'WOW' mic but an 'A-HA' mic.

Your general opinion of this product.

No one mic is for every voice. This is a less colored mic, that is also designed as a professional tool.It does not get in the way of you or your performance. It will give you back what you put into it, but slightly more flattering.

Phenomenal Mic

Shure is known for rugged, dependable microphones for almost any application.

Sensitivity, color, Freq Response, ruggedness, value

A/B'd this mic against Neumanns, high-end Sonys, and others. For my voice a class of studio owners said they far preferred this mic.

"Sublime" for my voice. results will vary. Perhaps a different large diaphragm would work better for you.
