Some people find the keypad strange, personally I like it, but it’s also really inexpensive and easy to match it with a little midi keyboard.

I almost bought this several times in the past. The amount of features built into it at this price is amazing. The latest firmware upgrade plus the free microphone made it too good to pass up. Kudos to Arturia for continually updating it rather than replacing it.
The capacitive keys are cool for experimentation and easy to get used to. I'm not a pianist so I don't mind trying out new ways to play. The added preset slots and loads of modulation paths means it's great for discovering great sounds.
A note about the mic, the preset volume is so low that it made me think the mic was broken. Go into the menu and raise the volume a lot to get it to respond. It also doesn't have built in effects. My H9 pedal is great with it, or I just record it and add effects later.
I wish the power supply was smaller, but overall it's a great sonic addition. Especially if you're into smaller synths.

This is my 3rd Minifreak I've owned. I had to sell the other 2 during some difficult financial times and here I am purchasing for the 3rd time. I've had lots of other synths and this is, by far, my favorite. It's easy to navigate, has a super snappy envelope, which will be even snappier after this 5.0 update. They have also included a sampler with granular effects as part of this update. I'm sure it will sell out fast so if you're looking into purchasing a synth that can do alot more than your standard synths, I highly recommend this!

This is my second microfreak, I loved the first one so much I had to get another to sync up with it. I have a lot of great synths, but the microfreak just seems alive, almost like an acoustic instrument. If it only had a built in reverb or delay to give it some space, it would be perfect. Though with only a mono output, it’s easy enough to always keep a little stomp box connected.

Being a standalone synth, packed with every feature you could want or need, that can also be a midi controller for an affordable price, it is a must have for a beginner or an experienced musician. Compact yet rugged, fun and easy to use, it’s hard to find anything negative to say about the microfreak. I wouldn’t change anything about it other than maybe make the digital display just a tad larger. Way to go arturia, you truly nailed it.

I've had the Arturia MicroFreak for about 2 months.
It's the most versatile and portable synth under $1000.
It contains many different types of synthesis which makes it a great first synth to teach you sound design.
The Modulation Matrix is very deep.
I think it's a great stepping stone into the world of modular synth.
Many extra patches are available online.
The editor software makes it really easy to move patches to & from the synth (drag & drop).
It gets me away from looking at the computer screen.
I'm happy.

I've had this synth for a few months now, and I'm impressed with this synth (and Arturia in general). There are so many parameters to it and you can really shape and create your sounds. The presets are surprisingly usable, which makes the learning process easy. Tweaking the presets or creating a new patch from scratch is also an easy process. It's always great when you can easy get to the sounds that you hear in your head.

The sound is pro. The capacitive keyboard is fun. You can carry it with one hand. Arturia is a great company and continues to release new firmware & presets. It’s almost as straightforward to control and shape sounds as an analog subtractive synth but there are more dimensions that can be created.
The sequencer and especially the arpeggiators are versatile. It’s so cool and I’m still learning how to dial in my own sounds.

Beauty - The Microfreak is one of the finest pieces of industrial design I've seen in a long while, especially for something as (normally) prosaic as a synthesizer. The capacitive keyboard alone should win an award. It just looks cool, like something you would want to use, or even just look at (see CAUTION).
Functionality - A dozen different synths packed into one that's the size of a spiral notebook. The 2.0 firmware update gave it even MORE features (see CAUTION).
CAUTION: I'd really like everybody who reads my review to buy this. However, if you're unfamiliar with some basic concepts of synthesis (signal flow, CV, waveforms, modulation, envelopes), you may not have as much fun right away. The manual is helpful, but the reason this unit gets raves from professional musicians/producers is because they've already learned the concepts listed above. If you're not a pro, the MicroFreak will be labor-intensive, but worth it in the end.

Before I even had my hands on the MicroFreak I knew I would like it, because it's just not your typical everyday synth. Most synths that come out are either your traditional Analog Subtractive synth or a Digital synth trying to emulate an Analog synth (these are known as VA synths) or a Wavetable synth (which are becoming all too common as well.)
Then there is the MicroFreak, which includes a variety of synthesis types, from Virtual Analog, Wavetable and Physical Modeling, to Formant and Karplus-Strong synthesis and more! Couple that with a unique Touchplate controller (something I was used to thanks to my Buchla setup) as well as MIDI ins and outs, and outputs for Control Voltage (to use with a Eurorack setup) you've got the makings of a great synth... but in this small of a package? and at this low of a price!? It's practically a miracle!

Just going over the basic functions and audio paths that can be chosen, it clearly defines the in-depth thought process that was taken to design this synth. Just got it yesterday, very easy to visually see and hear what sound is being created. Was hesitant to buy it at first, but very glad I changed my mind. This synth will diversify my original music to know end, and it also adds its own style by all means. highly recomend giving it a try.

This synth is incredibly addictive. Tone manipulation is just a lot of fun. I've had mine for about a week and I've put about 40 hours of play/learn time on this thing.
The "matrix" and digital oscillator settings are intricate and involved so there is a learning curve, but the new synth world that this has to offer is both challenging and a blast!
Sounds? Lots of metallic, edgy sounds but you CAN get warmth if you're willing to be patient and find it.
Keys?: Weird, but you really do get used to them and the finger motion changing envelopes, pitch, etc on the keys is pretty cool. (Although I did tell Arturia that I'd pay twice the price for a 'real' keybed)
Bottom line: For the price, a 4 voice synth with a REALLY nice sequencer, arpeggiator, 256 (128 user savable) patches, cycling envelope, etc,etc. this thing is definitely worth it!

I have been a producer, composer and sound designer for more than 30 years. I like sounds that evolve , modulate, morph and move. For many years In the 90’s and 2000’s my go to synthesis was Ensoniq Hyperwave/ Wavetable syntheses , which ran the digital waves through real analog filters . But they had reliability issues , and I constantly lost my work. Micro Freak is like a Ensoniq on steroids. And I fell in love the moment I heard it . The high frequencies that can sound harsh on most digital synths , but not on the Micro Freak. The analog filter smooths it into ear candy. I’ve never heard such clear metallic like sounds . And this thing can make any sound imaginable . The low end is big and round. The modulation matrix is so easy you will be programming new sounds within 3 minutes out of the box. As for the new keyboard style : many on YouTube have claimed that they don’t like the feel or the way the keys work. I disagree. It takes getting used to. You have to play it differently than a regular keyboard . But, it is very expressive. The first week I had it, I took it to a live jam session at a producer friends house. I was blown away at how I could intuitively and easily shape the perfect sound to what the other musicians were playing . One thing everyone noticed , was that the sounds were so full of movement, that there is no need for effects . There are no effects on board, and honestly I think that says a lot about it’s sonic depth. It’s like surfing through sound waves , and as you go along you find yourself the perfect wave, every time. It sounded so good, my friend went out and bought one that night . Buy it. Even if you hate the keys, it’s so small you can easily mount it above a controller and problem solved . At least the keys won’t break like the cheap plastic keys found on many lower cost synthesizers. The real magic is in the many types of synthesis, it’s mod matrix , sequencer ,envelope and cycling envelope . There is no way you could be disappointed .

I got this as a smaller semi-desktop synth for use with my digitakt. It it insane. You can get a lot of satisfying sounds out of this instrument, with little input. I thought I might be a bit put off by the touch keyboard, but I actually enjoy playing with it. The aftertouch options are amazing and add whole new levels. Overall I see this being used a lot.
