Product Review This is a perfect general use mic for the home studio. Great for instruments and vocals, both high, and low sound levels. You can't go wrong with the AT 4040.

Great, like every AT product I have ever owned. Sound and build. Customizable sound. Very easy...plug and play. For me...and to my ear...perfect. I have been a vocalist for 44 years...and this is the nicest studio microphone I have ever owned (and not the most expensive either).

As I stated before, this mic has a very sturdy build. I've known of people to have these for ages with no obvious signs of wear and tear. The High Pass Filter and 10dB pad are very convenient for home studio application. The mic is obviously built very solid as well. Just use the HPF or 10dB pad, or not, and plug it in to a preamp or audio interface with 48v phantom power. Quite simple, really. Best in it's class for this price range. Works well on various sources, and really shines on acoustic instruments. Pretty good for vocals as well.

Has a nice weight to it, feels like a sturdy build although i would not like to test that. the shock mount is also well built. bass roll off and pad built in great for use on guitar cab, over heads and ambient micing. switch on your phantom power plug it in and your good. Great sound. Full clear sound with nice fast transients. great ambient mic for guitar, a little hot for close micing a cab but with the built in pad and console pad it works great.

Your general opinion of this product. I did quite a bit of research when I started to put my home studio together. I wanted the best I could afford, but I couldn't afford to be disapointed very often. I read reviews of dozens of large diaphram condensers some costing more, some costing less, and decided that I could afford the Audio Technica 4040, and one other (less expensive) mic. I already owned a few stage mics, but good quality recording demands a good quality mic. This mic sounds great, and is very well built. It easily lives up to it's claims, and is the mainstay of my studio. The sensitivity amazed me (after many years with Shure a few and other good quality stage mics, I just wasn't prepared for what a large diaphram condenser was capable of). The frequency response is relatively flat (a good thing, no frequncies are too loud or soft, unless you want to EQ it that way). I have used it for vocals (great) stringed instruments (great) and soft wind instruments and hand percussion (great, great). The manufacturer cl

great mic - cannot beat the price

Your general opinion of this product. Great mic...tight. EQ is not necessary if you place it right. Pattern is tight so background noise can be minimized. Pad and low cut are nice especially if your mixer lacks them. If you have a decent mic pre you don't hear the 4040; just the source (no noise). Vocals sound beautiful, pure and real. Buy two.

Your general opinion of this product.

QUALITY:
I was very impressed with the build quality of this mic. No complaints here. The shock mount is a little wobbly, but functional.

FEATURES:
Again, the shock mount holds the mic with rubber bands and therefore feels a little wobbly.

EASE OF USE:
Very easy to get a good sound.

VALUE:
Great mic for the price. No question.

SOUND:
Very natural and neutral. I recorded myself first and found it sounded exactly like me. A lot of mics can't capture my voice that precisely.

STYLE:
R & B, Rock, Acoustic.

MUSIC EXPERIENCE:
Over 25 years experience.

OVERALL:
Overall, a great mic for the money. I prefer it over the more expensive AT-4033, as it sounds more natural without so much high-end hype.

Your general opinion of this product.

QUALITY:
Excellent low-noise circuitry. Audio Technica continues to prove that they are an industry leader when it comes to microphone quality!

FEATURES:
The pad is a great addition since I do not have that function on my digital mixing console. The low cut switch works great to keep unwanted hums out of my system.

EASE OF USE:
Very easy to set and point it at vocalists. It's best when used for close proximity recording, and the cardiod pattern keeps the recorded source isolated!

VALUE:
This product was well worth the price, I would pay double for this microphone!

SOUND:
Awesome frequency response. I use it for my vocal microphone in my studio and it's been doing wonders for my recordings!

STYLE:
Hard Rock

MUSIC EXPERIENCE:
8+ years as a musician and engineer
