Product Review
I had purchased this i5 microphone & this mic has warm and crystal clarity in sound for every percussion instruments (e.g. drum set, bongo, congo, tabla, dholak, etc) that I had used it on. It even had a great clarity on flute too.
This is well made and I would highly recommend this mic for anyone who is a sound engineer looking to setup fast with as minimal equalizing as possible.

I use this mic as my bottom mic on the snare for recording. It handles the crack of the snare no problem. Also good for micing guitar amps, as well as vocals in a pinch.

I’ve have always used a shure 57 on my snare drums but I can say there is not much of a difference in sound quality in my opinion.

As a Snare Microphone

I haven't had the microphone very ling but it seems pretty rugged. Had a drummer whack it pretty hard and there is no dent and the whack sounded clear! Quite a heavy robust microphone.
Features... It's a microphone has a fairly tight pattern so bleed from adjacent sources is ok and useable. Only under high compression would bleed become a problem.
Again, it's a microphone. YMMV. It all comes down to placement. Its larger than a SM57 but not by much. It can be tucked into places fairly easy.
Ok the sound. Scooped. On snare, which is my chosen app for it, it has a "rock" poppy sound. This isn't a natural sounding mic. The i5 has a lot of low mid body and a snap in the top end. It lends itself to a rock sound or other applications where it's response is needed to achieve a particular sound. Mics with a tailored sound can be limiting and freeing. The i5 could bring presence and body into a sound that is lacking it but would hype it if it already had it which a different placement could accommodate it's sound if there were no other microphone alternatives. As a last resort, you can EQ the sound to get what you're after. I don't think there is a single microphone that is a set it wherever and it always sounds good.
For what it's worth, the Audix i5 resides in my collection of over 24 microphones and will always be a top consideration for snare drum micing when I need it's response curve.

Excellant alternative to the 57
By: Nick Barnes from Philadelphia, PA USA

I have a small project studio in my apartment and I recently lost possession of my SM57. I'd heard of this mic before so when it came time to replace the 57 I decided to check it out, and after hearing some tests comparing the two mics I decided it was worth a shot. I don't regret it at all, it sounds good on my Line 6 amp and great on my acoustic. Haven't used it extensively for vocals, but I actually like what I hear so far. I'd still like to get another 57, and the i5 isn't the be all and end all of dynamic mics, but I'm still very glad I have it.
The best feature here is the off-axis rejection, which is definitely better than the 57's. Other than that, it's just a simple mic that sounds good. I read other people rating it lower for lack of features, but I don't need or want a lot of features on this type of mic so I gave it 5 stars there.
It's a dynamic mic with no pads or polarity switches, there's nothing to it. Plug and play.
It's brighter than the 57, which I think is good because my 57 often sounded a little dull. If you want just a very close representation of your sound you're probably better off with a 57, but the i5 has more punch to it. Again, I'd like to have both on hand at any given time but for now just the i5 will do.

Your general opinion of this product.
QUALITY:
Audix i5 is made very well, gave it a 4 on features, there aren't any, plug it in a play.
FEATURES:
The sound of this mic on various instruments in the studio.
EASE OF USE:
can't get much easier.
VALUE:
In comparison to the SM 57 of the same price, it is a good stable mate for other mic'ing techniques.
SOUND:
This is where the Audix i5 gets interesting, I've used this mic on drums; snare and toms, used it on elec guitar cabs it shines and also for acoustic guitar and this is where I really like the sound of the i5, on acoustic guitar it really brings out the sound of the instrument...so what if it isn't a condenser, this mic works well on this application.
