I was an owner of the UAD plugin which I thought sounded fat. But the hardware is much punchier and delivers an incredible tight lower frequency. It can help achieve booming subs if you’re trying to for that as well. I am not a studio master nor am I using this conventionally. I make underground electronic music from electro, breaks and left field techno. I’m for the most part strictly using this as an effects unit to fry my sounds or heavily boost the lows. This with the British mod helps me to secure the flavor I’ve been after. This is very easy to use and is worth the money.

I have this in my Recording vocal chain i record hiphop/rap , rnb and pop the Distressor is so versatile on different styles plus the brit mode 1176 style is insanity there is so much you can do with this unit i highly recommend especially if your recording vocal's
Dial it in and its less work you have to do in post.

There is nothing like a Distressor for vocal tracking or compressing the heck out of a signal or subtle distortion. The next best thing to the real thing is the Universal Audio Distresssor plugin but the HARDWARE always wins! This unit is a must have. I need another one ;)

I can’t say enough about the Distressor. I use on everything from drums to guitars, and even on lead vocals. It can be subtle or very aggressive if that’s the sound you’re going for. The attack and release knobs really help you dial in your compression. Also the harmonic distortion buttons help you bring out that growl on bass guitar! This is the second one I purchase from American Musical Supply. I highly recommend this unit. Especially if it’s your first high end compressor. As this is one of the most versatile units out there today. Definitely a must-have in your rack! ??

Have held off on getting one of these for years, mainly because I wanted to learn all the outboard gear it emulates before learning this and I did that, but it’s not just hype, it does all that stuff and more. It’s killer and ridiculously versatile.
Really is the Swiss Army knife of compressors.
Will definitely be getting a second.

I've had the EL8x for several months and it's no surprise why this compressor is found in professional studios around the world. Very diverse, musical compressor. From light compression, to opto, to all buttons in, this can do it. If you take the time to learn and experiment, this will become your go to for tracking and mixing.

EL8X is more than just a compressor, it has the ability to add character to its source. I recently used it with a BAE 1073 MP preamp to track bass, and the producer and I were very happy with the results. The track was smooth, punchy, and captured all the nuisance of the performance such as harmonics produced from slapping technique, without eq and just a few dB of gain reduction. Whether you use it to track with, or as an insert on your mix, this unit will deliver. Thanks to AMS for their flexible payment options and excellent service.

I have used all the plugin versions of this compressor, and although some are close to the characteristics of the hardware unit, they fall short when it comes to the overall clarity, punch and 3D'ness of the real thing. I have a humble home studio and sold my warm audio units (both the WA2A and WA76 both better than any plugin variant as well) to step up to this unit for tracking. I did not know if all the hype was true, that this could give you optical, could give you get, could give you clean and dirty, but it is true. Now I just need a second for stereo use. Amazing!

Is the Swiss Army knife of compression. I have found it does well for tracking and mixing. I wouldn’t use some comps in this price range for tracking. This distressor does anything well. Must have!!!!
