Product Rating Product Review I have several basses from 4, 5 and 12 string to long and short scale. I didn't have a fret less. So I took a chance and ordered an American Fender Jazz. I've never played a fret less before. I expected I would need to turn the EQ on my amp up across the board. Thinking that flatwound strings and the pick ups would need some kind of boost to get the tone out. Not the case at all. This bass has full natural tone. You can feel the low end and here the highs perfectly. Jazz bases have the best feel of almost any bass and Fender did a great job with the build. Very happy with it and I would recommend it. Try to demo one, if your not familiar

Product Review Very comfortable bass, plays and sounds great. If you want that jazz bass sound and you want a fretless, then here you go. It does not get any simplier than that.

Looking for Jaco

The build, fit and finish are very impressive; pretty much flawless. This bass has the sound and attack, response, etc, that only a Jazz bass has. That is the main feature; it's got that whole Fender thing going on. The more years I play Fender basses, the more I appreciate their design. If there were anything to upgrade the bass, it would be to do what I did to mine. I changed out the good but not great HMV bridge to a Hipshot "A" which is much more solid, and heavey. That added a lot of drive and sustain. I also epoxied the finger board on mine, as did Jaco Pastorius. (Check him out on utube if you aren't familiar with him.) Out of the box, the bass sounds like a great Fender Jazz. The stock bass sounds a little tubby, but with some careful set up work it can approach that tone described as "muah", with fairly good sustain. The mods I did to mine, mentioned above, were an attempt to get the tone a bit clearer and more sustain. I got it in spades, and I'm absolutely thrilled! Your general opinion of this product. I used to have a Ken Smith fretless 6 string bass. It was a monster sounding bass. But after 10 years with it I could never really get the "Jaco" sound and attack. So I went from an exotic $4,000 bass to an "off the rack" Fender. (FYI, to make sure I would be happy, before selling my Smith, I bought a Squire fretless Jazz as an experiment, which I sold when I got the American Fender version. The Fender Jazz is considerably better than the Squire, in most regards.)I miss looking at the Ken Smith bass, but I don't miss playing it at all, now that I have my Fender. The feel of the Fender Jazz is SO comfortable! It's a dream. When they say "plays like butter", this is the one. Balance is great. The neck fits in your hand effortlessly. I've been playing bass since 1965, and I have had to learn to do my own set up work. I use my excellent luthier when there is something beyond my capabilities. I did work with the truss rod a LOT to get the right combination of string angle from the bridge, and comfortable action. To make a long story short, a good set up makes a huge difference; really brings the bass to life! The fairly slim 4 string jazz neck means it has a certain mass that other basses don't have. That, along with the kind of woods used (stiffness, density, etc) give the bass it's typical attack and sustain. The single coil pickups are very good. They have a clear, punchy, and even volume and tone. I really only boost the low frequencies and a slight hump in the mids, around 5-600 HZ, slightly with %90 rear pickup volume full volume. Presto, sounds like Jaco! It's a "looker". Beautiful indeed. It has a super durable poly finish. Fender connoisseurs of vintage instruments prefer the old nitro cellulose finish. They say it allows the wood to sound more resonant. It's probably true. Never the less it sounds great and will hold up for decades. If it's that important, buy a vintage bass. Personally, I think it is a great quality modern upgrade in most ways. Action was good, just not my thing, quite. I would just say that playing fretless bass is a whole "nother ball game. It's a journey of discovery. I have tweaked my action more times than I can count. Sometimes I do it daily to some degree, just to get the right amount of growl; but then I'm used to that. Yeah, I'm a freak about that!
