If you are familiar with the 5017 and the 511 units they are the same only the 5017 has the single knob compressor. These are the best Mic amps made period. With a few more names like SSL & API. All are the best options on sound. Many brands say they are using Neve transformers and all this written stuff. Sound is not written so we use our ears to identify.
Cost is very fair when you understand what the concept of time actually is? If you are seeking the best results on sound / video / recording these units are made for this very purpose. for anyone new to recording audio start here

The silk button adds some great character, but this preamp also has the ability to be really clean. Compressor is nice, especially with Bass Guitar!

I knew this investment was worth it when I had plugged a KSM 32 dry and it sounded good of course, then I turned on the 5017 and the clear, warm, classic Neve sound came and my little brothers eyes blew up from the amazing sound quality this put forward.
Owning a Apogee Element 24, I was skeptical about getting this, very glad I did. The Element has a wonderful sound, this colors the sound in such a beautiful way that blends so well with the Element.
I'd highly recommend this for someone's first purchase of a high end Mic-Pre and doesn't need a ton of I/O's. You can't go wrong with this for the price, add ons such as the compression and phase sweep etc. and the amazing sound quality, GET THIS PRE!
