When you hit the rim, it triggers the head in almost 95% of cases. The ONLY way I have found to get a consistent rim trigger is to tap the unit itself near the tightening screw.

This and the other triggers in this line are well priced and perform in a solid, consistent and responsive manner. I've tried it with different modules with great results. Roland is the best electronic drum manufacturer out there, always has been it seems. Their products are generally very expensive but always worth the money.
