If you have 4 grand laying around, I can understand why you’d want to get the Montage .. the big brother of this incredible keyboard. But for $2000 you’re basically getting the same sounds and layering/performance as the montage. Great polyphony and sounds. Only down I’d say is the usb midi option, a lil different this time around. All around tho, 4.9 in my book.

I've always been a motif guy. Got rid of them and bought a Nord Electro 6D. Sold that and bought a YC73. Returned it for the Modx8 and couldn't be happier. Got all the famous/popular sounds from the motif line and more. The difference in sound quality is (un)balanced outputs. That's it! You really have to be a legit engineer to even know what to listen for to tell the difference. It's got somewhat of a learning curve but the touchscreen is so big and detailed...you can't get lost. Back button or home button will always save the day. The modx8 keybed action is nothing like a real piano. But I like it. Actually prefer the weight honestly. My playing can get pretty sloppy with synth action. I dont understand why people would even buy the modx line if the piano sound and feel is all you're after. Big shoutout to American Musical for their awesome customer service dealing with my returns and exchanges prior to getting the Modx. Get this board, you won't regret it. Best bang for buck on a rompler and thanks to the onboard memory and usb connectivty....I'd say it's pretty future proof for years to come.

I have been playing keyboards for 20 years and I would have to say that this is one of the best ones I have played! I have had it for a week and it has exceeded my expectations! It is very lightweight and the keys feel great (very close to a real piano). It is very user-friendly, and you can layer voices within minutes of turning it on. The live performance feature is great, as you can have everything you need all on one screen. You can also layer voices and save your settings within minutes with easy access to finding them later. It sounds GREAT! Pads are full and the piano and organ sounds are legit. I would highly recommend this keyboard!

I'm an aesthetically inclined person. The instrument looks very smooth and classy. The thing about it is that, it has basically the same sound engine as the Montage, minus a few buttons. I've only had for a day and I'm on it like the Green Hornet ! I'm sure it will meet all expectations.

I’m a 3x platinum music producer, and I have to say this keyboard has not failed me yet!! I love the operating system on it. The internal sounds are cutting edge. And it is very easy to use. We bought this board for our church. I love this board, because of its high-quality instrument patches. It is also reasonably priced in comparison to other workstations. We have the board now for a little over a month and it has exceeded our expectations in quality sound and ease of use. It is very user friendly. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is so lightweight. It may not be that big of a deal, but it almost feels like it isn't very durable. I hope we never have to find out.

The Yamaha MODX8 is the perfect keyboard for those looking for an authentic piano keybed and tones, coupled with FM Synthesis with layered tones in one instrument. The presets out of the box are astounding, and there are too many tones to sample in one sitting. I hear that if you demo each tone for one minute, it would take you 36 hours to go through them all! I am very impressed by this keyboard and the similarities to their flagship Motif. I own a few synths, but this is now my go to for practicing piano parts and that classic Yamaha sound!

It has been over 45 years since I played the piano during my high school graduation. I joined the US Navy and begun my life filled with science and technology.
But during that time, I constantly daydreamed that one day I would once again play music before an audience.
This MODX8 allows me layer tracks; play sounds over than just a piano and church organ.
It has only been a month, but as I have been learning this keyboard synthesizer I feel a thousand times better than I did went I played the organ before a packed church.
I have always wanted to produce music above and beyond the sounds that piano or organ can deliver.
I thought that I playing a piano would limit my desire to reproduce the sounds which guitars, drums, & horns added to a musical production.
But now I am layering tracks with instruments I’ve only always dreamed of playing.

I own high end keyboards from all the major manufacturers and this board stands with the best. It has great onboard sounds. The apreggiator has very good options. The Touchscreen is awesome. They keyboard itself is the lightest 88 note I’ve ever had - (I don’t like lugging around heavy keyboards everywhere) - and the weighted keys are responsive and feel very realistic. Love this board. With the AWM2 and FM synthesis, this machine has no limitations. I bought the 88-key and it's lightweight makes it great foe gigs. Also, the seamless transition of performances in Live Set is perfect for switching from sound to sound with no interruptions. Too many features to name, and I am pretty sure I have only began to tap into the capabilities.

Over the years I've had various toy level keyboard synthesizers. A couple of years I purchased the Yamaha PSR EW410. Nice little rig, bit more than a toy, decent synth keys. Then along came the MODX line from Yamaha. I got it just a week ago, love it! The action is nice, not really heavy as some may say, however, I've been playing acoustic pianos on and off for years. The installed sounds are mind-boggling, the capabilities are near endless. At this point, I have not even scratched the surface of what this synthesizer can do. I would highly recommend it to anyone in the market for one.

I was told that this key board was just another motif .... they were wrong. I love all the sounds that I can mix and how I can mix as many as 8 at a time. I play this keyboard and it amazes me all the time.It also has the same engine as the montage so when you are switching between sound it seemlessly goes to the next sound without that interruption. I use it in church for worship music and they love all the blends of sounds I put together in learning how to master that wonder knob to really open up the sounds during church service. It’s light and not hard to move around. My strings section is more than I need and I’m still discovering all the pad sounds as well. pick one up now and have fun with it.

The Sound Quality Is Amazing. One the The things I love about
this keyboard is the Super Knob. It also have a rhythm pattern button that has over 8 different style drums that come up instantly that you can use to play with you. It also has a keyboard that you can use to type in the sound you're looking for and it will search and pull up that sound on your keyboard. I bought this keyboard for my son for Christmas. This over exceeded my expectations! This Keyboard has 4 knobs and 4 faders so you can create a sound or you can use the Super Knob and the Keyboard will ask you a question. After you respond to it, it will perform whatever you asked it to do. When they delivered my son's keyboard, the guy said, he wish I was his mom. He said I Rock! I highly recommend this. We Are Still Exploring It. But I definitely Got my money worth!

I was sort of hesitant on getting this board after some negative reviews but went into a local music store and that changed my mind. I was shown by a Yamaha rep what this board could do and decided I'd try it on for size.
Since I've had it, it just keeps getting better and better! The sounds are excellent, I love the implementation of the Rhodes keys, because Yamaha isn't usually known for Rhodes sounds, but the ones in the preset list are very nice and true to original tone with the ability to customize to your hearts content.
However, I DO have a gripe about the workstation sequencer. There is a bit of a learning curve to it and Yamaha doesn't make this one easy to learn. The Motif/MO series was MUCH easier to learn, record and save tracks. I'm still getting used to it, but I don't really care what they did to this one at all. Hint, hint Yamaha!
Overall, I do love what I've learned about the board so far and the possibilities are endless once you DAW out or hook up to your recording software. Very satisfied with this board!

The Yamaha MODX8 is absolutely the best Synthesizer on the market ( For the Money). Not only do you have an Fm engine to create some impressive sounds, but you also have the AWM2 sampler engine that offers 128 voices of polyphony. These samples sound great!!! With the new 2.0 update, I know I can sequence my music. As well as create live sets. As a working musician, I can't state how much time this instrument saves me, not to mention it's pretty lite for an 88 key synth with weighted keys. I mostly enjoy using this in the studio with an Ipad running Cubase; this instrument is mighty. But it also works well with others and can function as an audio interface. So go ahead and invest in yourself and your band. And if you're a fan of the Motif or the old DX-7, know you are getting the best of both worlds

I have the MODX-8, with weighted keys.
The "brain" of the MODX is the same one you find in the Montage - same sounds, same commands, same synthesis architecture. But for nearly half the price of a comparable Montage, what you sacrifice is minuscule. The keybed is slightly different, and there are fewer controls on the panel (but the touch screen is exactly the same). Also, you don't have as much internal storage for adding soundbanks from Yamaha Music Soft, and the casing is plastic instead of metal (so handle carefully!). The benefit of the 'cheaper' casing is immediately noticeable if you're a gigging musician - it weighs about half as much as the Montage. That was the biggest selling point for me.
There are functions and sounds enough in this thing to keep you busy for MONTHS, and the sounds are all incredible. Add the Chick Correa Mark V soundbank (free) and you add some of the best-sounding modeled electric pianos available.
As the owner of a Clavinova, I'm just a tiny bit disappointed in the acoustic piano sounds, but then there's really nothing out there in the digital world that sounds like a Clavinova.
I use this in my multi-keyboard set up with my band. The drummer can plug in with his electronic drums and set the tempo for arpeggiated parts or the super-cool envelope-follower. Makes life VERY easy in those songs that have those parts, and my band mates all get wide-eyed when they hear the next sound or trick I've come up with.
If you have the money and some roadies with strong backs, maybe the Montage is a better choice. Otherwise, the MODX is really the perfect synth for the gigging musician. It does not disappoint.

This keyboard goes above and beyond all of my expectations. The light weight of the keyboard bundled with a gator case on wheels prove to be a good fit for a musician who travels and gigs often. The controls are also not too difficult to learn and utilize during a live performance. Definitely recommend.

Feels and sounds great. I feel like it as a short learning curb but that could be I have been using Yamaha keyboards since the PSR series.
So easy to add sample sounds. Love the USB volume knob. Love the space for my ipad.
I have only owned this keyboard for 3 months at home. I use it to learn songs for church rite now. I use MO8 at church.
For a guy married with children, and the comfortable payment plan, the MODX work great! Thank AMS

I was looking all over for this keyboard b/c my husband saw the smaller version and fell in love, he only plays the keyboard with the 88 keys. I saw how bad he wanted it, so from that day forward, I knew what I was getting him. I wanted to surprise him for Christmas, so I went to all the music stores I could find and everyone was sold out. They kept telling me I wouldn’t be able to find it, but I couldn’t give up. I couldn’t remember this sites name so I asked and he told me. As an owner of a MOX8, I was ready to upgrade. I was super excited about this new MODX8 version coming out. I decided to treat myself for Christmas. One of The best Christmas gifts ever! I am blown away by the rich sound, and new sounds and programs added! Still getting used to the knob, but love that they brought the sliders back! The only thing I didn't like is that the keyboard didn't come with a power cord. At this price, I believe that should have been included. Good thing my MOX8 cord fit, so I will use that for now until I order another one. But, overall I highly recommend this keyboard! You won't be disappointed!

The MODX88 is great. It has everything I need, from motion-controlled sonic landscapes to satisfying keyboard action.
With FM and AWM sounds, it produces the sounds I desire. Works great with my DAW software, computer, and iPad.
