In your quest for the perfect low-end tone, why look any further than Fender’s Jazz Bass? Especially since the all new American Professional Jazz Bass is the company’s most progressive and contemporary bass Fender has made yet. Thump your way to the top with the Jazz Bass’ undeniable sound. Played by some of music’s most notable bass players (Jaco Pastorius, Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, Flea) to name a few, the Professional Jazz Bass’ signature deep growl can be heard on thousands upon thousands of recordings. The Jazz Bass has been a staple for bassists since 1960, and now, over 50 years later, the instrument is still being tweaked to further its position in history.
The original Jazz Bass was built on the success of Fender’s Precision Bass, and designed to be more sleek, and offer more tonal options for players. The resulting guitar was a more premium instrument and became very attractive for contemporary bass players.
New and Improved
The American Professional Jazz Bass released in 2017 takes the core model and enhances it. The most obvious and essential changes are the V-Mod pickups designed by the legendary Michael Bump. By switching the position of the alnico magnets, Bump was able to achieve more tonal clarity than the previous pickups. Like the other new professional models, the V-Mod pickups are revolutionary in terms of shaping one’s sound. Fender also introduces the Slim Modern “C” neck to the bass with narrow-tall frets and Posiflex graphite rods. The Slim “C” is fast and responsive, perfect for those with smaller hands, while the Posiflex rods add increased stability and prevent warping of the instrument. Similarly to the Precision Bass, the American Professional Jazz Bass uses a fluted shaft on its tuning machines, thus optimizing the instruments sustain and intonation.
Jazzed Up Sound
Though Fender’s Professional Jazz Bass has been dubbed for jazz, the sound output is more versatile and identifiable than any other bass on the market. Roll off the treble and you’ll hear the Jazz Bass growl, perfect for Rock, Funk, Pop, Reggae, Disco, you name it. Walk your way up into the higher frets and you’ll see why it’s preferred in jazz music for soloing. The clarity is unmistakable authentic Fender tone. The bass really shines somewhere in the middle though, producing a rich balanced sound that has become its calling card, and with the new narrow-tall frets, bassists will have an easier time bending and adding vibrato to their notes. All these subtle changes are why Fender continues to lead the way in innovation and quality.
Although the Standard Jazz Bass was nearly perfect, Fender couldn’t rest on their laurels and not evolve. The resulting American Professional Jazz Bass is a testament to keeping their customers inspired and well equipped to handle today’s musical demands. The American Professional Jazz Bass is a working bass player’s best friend.
