The EVM-12L BLACK LABEL is the OFFICIAL guitar loudspeaker of Zakk Wylde and Black Label Society.
The EV M12L 12-inch loudspeaker was introduced in 1983. Known for its huge tone, gorgeous low-end and incredible stability at extreme volumes, it quickly achieved legendary status. Top guitarists and bassists loved it not only for its sound, but also for its reliability. Tour after tour, the EVM12L held up to the demands of the most punishing players.

Enter: the EVM-12L BLACK LABEL.
Take the EVM-12L, add Zakk’s personal specs (improved power handling, improved magnet design, better venting, and the Black Label colors), and now you have the greatest bleep-ing guitar loudspeaker in the world. Wanna argue with Zakk on that? I didn’t think so. Remember: The only label is BLACK.

Handmade by hardworking, real American folks in Morrilton, Arkansas, the EVM-12L Black Label is the product of EV blood and sweat.

We hope that you will represent the EV and Black Label Society colors with honor. We know that you will sound louder, better, and harder with the EVM-12L Black Label.

Zakk Wylde demands killer tone from his guitar speakers.
    300 WATTS OF IT. EACH.
That's why the only speaker Zakk uses is the EVM12L Black Label.

Zakk Wylde: Guitar Hero Swears by EV-- Introduces EVM-12L BLACK LABEL
Today's biggest name in metal guitar, Zakk Wylde, Swears by EV

Zakk Wylde Interview, March 20th, The Quest, Minneapolis

James Edlund (Artist Relations/Public Relations Manager, EV): “Tell me about Zakk’s live rig.”

Tim Bolin (BLS Tour Manager): “We normally have 8 live Marshall cabinets, all loaded with EVM-12L loudspeakers. That’s 6400 (expletive deleted) watts, man. You know, it’s his thing, always has been. Thank God we’re finally at this point, finally getting it done. An EVM-12L loaded cabinet weighs two and half times that of a normal Marshall cabinet. Dave, our soundman, (expletive deleted) threw his back out one year: they had to bring a stretcher out.

Zakk’s a Marshall guy. So he doesn’t waiver at all. He’s loyal like an old dog. Zakk knows what he wants and what he doesn’t want. And what he does want is the EV EVM-12L.”

James Edlund: “When did you start using the EVM12L loudspeaker? What do you think is unique about it?”

Zakk Wylde: “Let me get my cocktail. Welcome to the wild, wild, wild world of sports. The thing is, how I got turned on to EV... Guys, listen, this is a great story, how I (expletive deleted) got turned on to EV. I was overseas in Europe hanging out and my Celestions got blown out and I needed replacements. Rather than go back to the Celestions, we swapped them with the EVM-12L’s and wow - I never went back to anything else. That was the beginning of the relationship between Black Label and EV.

Seriously, when the EV speakers went into my cabinet it was kind of by accident. My guys were like, hey, we got these EVM-12L’s and we stuck them in there... They make the Marshalls sound better... They don’t break up as much, you know what I mean, there’s more headroom. And with the 100-watt head and everything like that, it’s a great combination. It’s like beer and pretzels, peanut butter and jelly, I mean, the perfect combination of the Gibson Les Paul and a Marshall, the Marshall and the EVs, me and my EV... It’s the perfect combination for me, you know what I’m saying. I don’t use any channel switching or any of that. I use the volume knob. If you’re gonna play ZZ Top’s ‘Tush’ or ‘La Grange’, du du du, all you have to do is turn the volume down - just turn the (expletive deleted) guitar down, you know what I’m saying? With the EVM-12L speakers, like with Ozzy I’m doing ‘Mama I’m Coming Home’ or anything like that I just turn the volume down and just play the (expletive deleted) song. And when I want to get heavy I just turn the volume up and step on the distortion pedal. There you go. There are only two sounds: clean and dirty. And it’s like music: there’s sh*t and there’s good. That’s what it’s all about. Next question.”

    James Edlund: “Black and white.”

Zakk Wylde: “You’re right. That’s why our colors are black and white. There are no gray issues, brother. You’re either an a*#hole or one of the guys, flat out. That’s why I love EV, kids. Stay true to EV.”

James Edlund: “EVM-12Ls are hand-built at our loudspeaker factory in Morrilton, Arkansas by a bunch of hard-working good men and women. Do you have a shout-out for the guys at the plant?”

Zakk Wylde: “To the Morrilton Arkansas chapter of Black Label, ‘cause that’s what it (expletive deleted) is, stay strong, keep whooping a*# and my advice to you, now that you’re part of the Black Label family, just for the love of God guys, keep working hard and start drinking heavily, please, just do it, do it, and get it done. Love you...”

Zakk Wylde: “Any (expletive deleted) can have his photo taken with a loudspeaker - ‘hey, I’m Zakk Wylde’... We’re not talking about (expletive deleted) Justin Timberlake here. This is a rock band. The EVM-12L is a no-brainer... Us working together... It’s like Marshall and Gibson. I am not an endorsement whore. The stuff I use is the stuff I stand by. The words God, family, loyalty, integrity, and honor. I know it doesn’t carry much weight these days, but in Black Label it (expletive deleted) does. That’s why I use EV. You find something, you stick with it, and that’s that, you know what I’m saying. You get married once: You pick one and you stick with it!”

Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
The sturdiest most rugged speaker I've ever had the priviledge to play through. They're heavy. VERY heavy. Not just in weight, but, also in sound!
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
I recommended them to my rhythm guitarist several months ago after he blew a Celestion in his Marshall. At first he balked due to the price tag, but after explaining that they were the same ones we had heard Zakk playing through at the BLS concert he went for them. we've pushed them as hard as we can and even after they heat up, they still sound incredibly clean without any diminishment like we were getting through the Celetion's. No matter what we've thrown at them (tonewise of course) they respond like no other speakers we have EVER played through and
Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
Outstanding craftmanship and more importantly, AMERICAN MADE! When I want clean they are incredibly clean, but, when I want dirty they are downright sickeningly dirty! Tons of headroom and my effects and modelings have NEVER sounded soooo good! I have been very jealous of his rig ever since he got them and being as I'm on disability it's going to be a long while before I can afford my own set, but, when I can save the money up and get them, I feel like my rig will FINALLY be complete! I have always demanded a lot of myself and my equipment and those two speakers are at the top of my list of needs. I've even quit smoking so that I can get there a little quicker. God bless your workers who have obviously taken time and care to produce a superior product! Take THAT England and China!!!
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Looking for speakers that won't blow when you push them a little harder than normal has been a search that I have been going through for over twenty-eight years and that search finally ended this past year when I heard the sounds produced by your EVM12L's. I was amazed that something that could sound so crunchy could also produce such clean and mellow sounds, not to mention everything in between. October 20th I will turn fourty-three and it will mark my twenty-ninth year of playing guitar. I'm nowhere as good as a lot of people out there, but, I am original and I want THE original EVM12L's.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
It's actually a shame that your speakers aren't visible once they are installed, but, I love the design and craftsmanship. Helping my rhythm guitarist unbox and install them was actually a nice experience. He remarked that it felt final before he even flicked the switch and you know what? He was right. The only way he will ever replace them is if somehow there was accidental physical damage to them and I can't see that happening as we both love our equipment almost as much and in some cases more than family. I've told him on more than one occasion that family may let him down, but, those Black Label's won't!
Action
How was the action out of the box?
You don't have to be a musician to appreciate the sound, but, if you are a musician, you will have a smile plastered ear to ear on your mug. I will have mine. Don't know when, but, I've been dropping hints every day to my old lady and my friends so maybe, just maybe, they'll get together and help an old fart like me have a exttremely good birthday. Don't let something this good pass you by if you play guitar. By the way, you guys should give yourselves a big hearty pat on the back. Also, give your employees a bonus for such outstanding work and keep American workers working. Last, but certainly not least, thanks to Zakk Wylde. PEACE. Johnny B.

How was the action out of the box?
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
They are quite sturdy. Heavy cast frame and huge magnet. Appear to be well built.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
I've only had them a few months. No problems so far.
Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
I love these speakers. They are the best speakers I've ever tried.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
These things move a lot more air than any other speaker I've tried. You can tell a definite difference when standing in front of these compared to other speakers.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
These will put out whatever you dial in your amp to sound like. They don't really add any thing like some of the other more popular speakers(v30).
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
I think they look awesome. But you can't see them once they're installed.
